I'm thinking of creating a GFX hack of SMW. I won't be improving the graphics but instead downgrading them to NES format. Here is a screen of some basic objects and sprites that I have edited.

If the people like it, then I will continue to make this hack and post more screens over the next few hours and days. If you think it is a crap idea and I should scrap it then just say so.

Not a bad idea at all. I think someone else on the board is doing a NES SMW hack though too. (is it yoshi master?) Those look good though, keep it up, and I hope to see more.

Suggestion: Use only the first four (three, if you're not counting transparency) colors of the first four palettes. The NES did only have 12 colors + 1 background color for Layer 1 (no layer 2, 3 or 4 on the NES) and 12 colors + transparency for sprites.

I think yoshi master was working on a SMW beta remake.

This sounds like a cool idea, I say go for it. Would you only be redesigning the original SMW levels though, or would you be including some new levels?

Heh. The sprites in the screen does look pretty nes-like. I think it could be very well done if you go on with it.

That's a clever idea... just shows how minor dark and light lines added to a picture really add value.

Interesting concept... I was planning on making classic hacks of all the original Mario Games with matching GFX as well, but I've got sidetracked with more important stuff. I'll do it when I find the time, but I like this idea so far

Black, white, brown, (color of the koopa), transparency.
That's 5 colors.

You could always pretend the koopas are layered sprites. Megaman had six colors in the original NES games, because his eyes were a seperate sprite from his body.

I knew that the koopas had an extra color before I posted the screens. I'm still trying to decide which color I'll take out of them.

Lose the white, brighten the orange, and make the eyes orange. Copy all of the palettes and GFX from SMB3 for NES.

The key has a darker color and the koopa's eyes are colored.
I changed more but they would look glitchy on the screen so i'll put them in the next screen.
