When my parents bought me a $4000+ laptop as a graduation present, I was overjoyed. I looked forward to it more than anything. Right now, I am posting to you from my new Dell Inspiron XPS Gen 2, a gaming laptop that is better than most desktop computers and many "Alienware" computers, (read a bit about it here quickly, if you'd like) and is as "top of the line" as it gets as far as laptops are concerned. We picked all of the best options for it, as far as it's processor and memory and whatnot are concerned. What seemed to me like a complete dream at first is turning out to be a slight nightmare. I've never had or really used a laptop before, so I'm not used to it... at all. I'm experiencing some issues in the adjusting process.

1. I'm not used to the touch pad at all. It is freaking impossible to use, and I am having the damndest time trying to click on things, or manuevering over to them for that matter.

2. The wireless mouse I got with it is too jerky when I use it, and can't be utilized all of the time anyway (such as when I am sitting in a chair for obvious reasons, or in bed, because the mattress is soft and the mousepad dips into where I am sitting, etc.)

3. I can barely ever find a comfortable way to sit when using my laptop. It's starting to hurt my neck and back a bit.

4. I'm not used to the laptop keyboard, let alone the fact that there is no numpad. I always used the numpad for typing numbers for whatever reason, so every time I want to type a number, I instinctively hover my hand over an area to the right of the keyboard, where there is nothing. I am having difficulty typing with it regardless, and making a lot of silly typos.

5. The screen resolution is 1920 by 1200 pixels by default, and that is the only resolution where everything does not look stretched out, so I would like to keep it on that. However, this has me squinting to read what was previously normal sized text, and the mouse is so tiny that I keep losing it's position on the screen.

6. I can't keep this "laptop" on top of my lap, as the damned thing gets so hot when it is running, it starts to feel as if it is burning my legs. Ouch!

7. The battery life is only about 2 hours, so I keep constantly having to plug it in, or switch to my spare battery when I want to use it in a place where there is no outlet. This, as you can imagine, gets quite obnoxious.

I could go on, but it's kind of depressing me. It's great for 3D modeling and runs pretty much anything like a complete dream, but it's just taxing to use! Does anyone have any tips or pointers on how I can adjust to this new beast?

I envy you. I envy you so goddamn much.

I've never been a big fan of laptops either, but YOU JUST GOT A $4K PC. I thought I was spoiled. Damn damn damn damn damn. No offense meant, it's not your fault that I'M LONELY AND EVERYONE HATES ME *EMO TIME*

Anyway, a few tips:

- Increase the GUI's font size.
- Get a mousepad and a good mouse, and sit it on a desk. Just because it's a laptop doesn't mean it has to be on your lap or whatever.
- Don't they have USB numpads that you can plug in? I do know that most laptops have num lock keys which allow you to use a few of the letter/punctuation keys for numpad-like features. Though that can be a pain in the ass.
- Give it time. It takes time to get used to stuff, and eventually, you will.

Yeah, you can get USB numpads but the price is outrageous. I suggest a corded mouse and a hard mousepad (just nail a mousepad to a piece of wood ).

Laptops sucks IMO, I got one from free and even if it's kinda more powerful than this computer it's kinda... uncomfortable to use. :/

First thing I bought for it was a "gaming mouse". That works really well. That touchpad is worthless, belive me. Same goes for any laptop, it's should only be used when you can bother to take out the mouse. Or like when you're using something that is keyboard only, or almost keyboard only. Such as a CLI.

Buy a moniter, alienware laptop, mouse, keyboard, adapter, power strip, and be done with it. Oh wait, that's called a desktop. Crap.

It always takes some time to get adjusted to a laptop from working on a a PC. You'll get used to it eventually.

(I had to get a laptop for college. It was... quite weird for a while, but I got used to it. Still miss the numpad, though.)

Odds are that you can disable extra features on it to increase the battery life. For instance... Are you really using the modem, if it has one? How about wired (or wireless, one or the other) ethernet?

Instead of putting it on your lap how about putting it on an actual desk or the edge of your bed and sit on pillows like a desk .

I haven't had a laptop but I've used my friends Dell and stuff.

That's sucky battery life. But I guess that's what you get for having such a powerful laptop .

Find a better mouse?
