So I got bored and figured I'd try messing with a save file for BS Zelda 1.

So make a male and female character with the same name and different genders, but move the save file each time...

This is going to be remarkably hard. Except not.

Fire up FC to check what changed...
[ 1:40:14.95] E:\Emulation\SNES>fc /b save_m.srm save_f.srm
Comparing files save_m.srm and SAVE_F.SRM
00000A00: 01 02

So a quick check of 000 and A00 gives...

00000000 - 01 37 1a 14 14 1f 14 31
00000A00 - 01 10 10 10 10 00 00 00

The garbage at 01 is probably XKEEPER (it makes sense), with 10101010 being AAAA... yeah, that's about right. So let's change that...

I really should try and find how the game stores items. That's probably even more fun! (and is actually what I'll probably do next)
