I've always been impressed by my younger brother's artistic skill, and last night I called upon his services to represent one of my characters, Callean Silvershield, on paper. I was able to sit down with him and lay out exactly what details I wanted, and...well, take a look at the final product.

I was especially happy with several things: the plume on his helmet, the cape (which is barely seen, but the cord across his chest looks wonderful), the sword, and the shield (upon which a unicorn head, Callean's guild emblem, can be seen - I was ecstatic with the idea of adding that). The emblem on his chest is slightly sharper than the one on his shield. The detail that I was the happiest over was the belt; aside from the potion vials on the left (which are awesome), the way his two weapons are secured looks entirely realistic. The detail is fantastic.

Just curious. It's nice, I guess. it's just that.... I'm not incredibly impressed with it, IMO.
For instance: Judging by where the head is placed, one may think that the knights is fat... and I see a few squiggly lines, and the helm plume isn't that impressive. Other than that, it's not bad, though

I am probably least impressed with the helmet itself. It's placement isn't so bad - I thought it suggested more of a barrel chest than a barrel gut - but it was one of the last parts that he set his attention to, and it looks a bit rushed and crooked. Truly, he completed the whole thing in an aggregate of maybe half an hour, which is not an enormous span, so he might've done better if I weren't staring over his shoulder and urging him on.

The plume isn't impressive on it's own, but when seen as part of the whole it gives me the impression of a fully decked out, tournament-ready warrior. Perhaps it's the increase in the knight's stature that yields that feeling. But that's only how I saw it.

I'm not too happy with the plate armor seen on the legs, but my brother wanted to experiment a bit with light reflecting off the angled metal and it didn't turn out as I'd expected .

I'm so enthusiastic over it because it's the first time I've seen my character on paper. I've written about him for years, basing him on an oft-changing picture in my mind, but now I have a solid benchmark to use.

Anyhow, thanks for the comments, Clockworkz .

I would say that the reason why Callean looks a bit fat is because of the angle. But, that's not to say I don't like it. It's very well done, and I really like the coloring. Something that I really do not add to most of my drawings. By the way, is that the original size of the drawing?

The original is around ten inches tall (an impromptu measurement made with a standard 8.5" x 11" sheet of paper ).

The drawing was originally pencil, but I suggested a black marker outline so that I could erase stray pencil markings safely. I'm a bit neurotic over that sort of thing. I insisted that a small bit of shading was added, mainly to accurately represent the character's heraldry on his shield and surcoat. The yellow marker bits were his idea, just to accent certain parts. And the black marker fill-ins, like I said earlier, were an attempt to simulate the reflection of light. I like how it looks, even though I didn't think it accomplished the intention very well.

Thanks for the kind comments .
