well, I didn't come up with the idea originaly, but I thought it could possibly be adapted. At an old set of forums I went to, much like how custom titles are offered in the profile after a set post amount, they offered your own name change via profile after a set post amount. I beleive it was 500...of course, they were not as actave as this board, in which 500 would not be nearly enough Anyways...I just thought that maybe somthing like that might help the admins out, not always having to change names by hand, esepecialy in the time of "fads" where lots of people change names to go along with it. On the other board, it was coded so that name changes were allowed once a week - you change it, that's it. The old fashioned way could still be aceptable to people without the right postcount, or who find it urgent to change their name before the week is up. Only issue I really see with this is people trying to raise their postcount to get it, might add to the spam population. But asside from that, I thought it seemed like an interesting idea. Well anyways, that's my two cents

um...i don't think it is a good idea...it is just another excuse people could use for posting a lot of meaningless posts or invite such a think (a.k.a. spamming)

yeah, I was affraid of that...it probably wasn't a problem on that other board because like I said, it wasn't as active, not that many people actualy cared about their post count there...though you'll have people who poste just for that anywhere. that's just what happens on forums with alot of members, I guess

Thought its a good idea and i can see your point in this, it is a bad idea
yes alot of spamming can happen, but also, with people changing their names all the time it would be pointless and you would have a hard time into finding a person and that
The name you put in to start with when you register is the name you should stick with... unless you have such a problem with it and you can't sleep and what-not, then let the admins know and they can change it

uh.. name changes are almost always pointless..

besides, if this feature existed, Colleen wouldn't have a reason to be admin!
HAHA I KID I LOVE YOU Colleen

I haven't heard complaints from admins yet about changing too many nicks.. plus it's not required for them to do so.. probably the best thing to do is hear one of their responses.

If spamming is an issue, then you could allow users to change their name if they've been here for like 6 months, for instance.
But it'd still need to be limited, I guess... Or to make it possible for admins to prevent SOME people to change their names...

Or else people will change their nick all the time, like some do on MSN.

Why not have it so a member can go on Edit Profile... Put a new name in the name field... Click apply, then the user gets added to a list of people who want their names changed... Listing what it is, and what they want it to be... Then the admins can go through just licking 'accept' or 'decline'...

Dunno if you'll all agree... But i like the idea ...

I won't got with that in fully, but it is better not to allow all names changed. A new member who asks for a name change after his first two days like "OMG MY NAM SUKS DUDE I DONT WANT 2 BE SSJULTRAMEGGA5000 MOREON. PLS CHANGE MY NAM" should have thought _before_ he registered that nick
Letting someone name "OMG u suck" for example would be pretty bad if any user might be able to change the name anytime
By the way, at least in phpBBs people can change their names whenever they want, if enabled in the admin crontrol panel. Bleh

Well... mix lots of security features together... Like:

1) Minimum post count to change name
2) limit name changing rate (maybe once a week or month, unless special admin request)
3) Have admin approval, like in my last post...

And noticed I typed 'lick' rather than 'click' in my last post... Leaving it though... So people can have visions of the admins licking their monitors ...

just for those saying people would change names all the time, I did mention how the other board had a once a week limit. It could always be implimented, maybe with a greater time period. But since the idea probbaly wouldn't work here, now that you've all made some decent points...yeah

Having to get admin approval makes it amount to essentially the same thing as it is now. Even if it's an automated thing (e.g., it's added to a "pending approval list" or whatever) it's just a more limited version of what it is now.

This is what I mean by my idea

Basically a page where admins can quickly click a button to accept or decline a user's namechange request... Rather than go through page after page to edit it...

PS - Acmlm, don't take the comment seriously... I'm tired, and ran out of ideas for new names...

Another reason it wouldnt be a good idea is becuase then everyone with the set number of posts would just change his name over and over. So by that admins or anyone who needs there profile has to remember there ID number. I just think its perfect the way it is. Maybe Acmlm could make a feature where it will show username changes so people could know who is who. Other then that it is fine.

Why can't people just choise there name and stick with it. If you really have a major problem with it i'm sure the Admins would help you out they seem like nice people.

You should never make your name go along with a fad. Fads change way to quickly for it.
