Yeah, it's very slow because it has to try to emulate the PowerPC architecture on Intel x86 hardware -- not an easy task. I haven't played with PearPC, but then I really don't see the point when I have a Mac.

Reminds me, I need to install VirtualPC to my Mac just to have a play with it. I imagine it will be maddeningly slow, but I dunno, I'm just curious to see for myself firsthand.

Oh please do try VirtualPC and tell me how it works. I wonder if its as slow as PearPC. Would VirtualPC let me play all my Windows games on a Mac? If so, I might consider buying a Mac-Mini.

Just wait for the Intel Macs to be released, Snika -- apparently a feature of these will be that you can dual-boot them and run Windows if you want.

That would be much quicker than emulation or virtual machines of any sort.

I use virtual machines at work, and even on their native architecture it's pretty slow, I don't have high expectations of Virtual PC, *particularly* not for gaming. Hell, I can't even run Red Alert 2 in a VMware session on x86 hardware, it's too slow...

Or someone ports Wine to Mac OS X. Which maybe is as good too.

Still, you need to buy the commercial version apparently if you want to play anything more advanced than basic ddraw games. Such as old good Command and conquer...

I'm surprised that RA2 runs at all in the virtual machine.

2 hours to install is slow? Have you ever installed Windows?

You can run other x86 OSes on them? Now that is awesome.

AFAIK, yes (and you can run other PowerPC OS's on current Macs too, btw... such as Yellow Dog Linux).

I remember reading a review of an x86 Developer Mac. The reviewers installed Windows XP to it and it ran fine. They tried to install Mac OS X Intel to a Dell and didn't have any luck though.

I would assume that you could dual boot the Mac with Windows... or Linux... or whatever. For some reason I have a feeling that it was suggested as a *feature* of the Intel Macs.

Of course, not being an Apple insider, I wouldn't know for sure, but this seems to be what I've heard from various sources, and it sounds interesting to me

And hell, if you can't dual-boot, at least the architecture will be x86 so running a virtual machine won't be as slow....

emulation is just as slow. Windows 98 runs fine in an emulated windows environment, try that with WindowsXP or Windows2k3 and non-dual processor system is going slow to a crawl.

PearPC emulates MacOS at a rate of 1/500MHz. So a 500MHz system running PearPC will have the emulated computer running at 1MHz... RAM usually helps but dual processing makes the better difference.

As for GUIs, Mac is more inituitive, I'll give it credit for that...but it still takes a lot of resources to run the GUI.

Yes, but that's because PearPC is a PPC-on-x86 emulator. That means for every PPC instruction it has to perform several (probably dozens or even hundreds) x86 instructions. With the new Macs being x86, we could use an x86-on-x86 emulator, which would be a hell of a lot faster because no interpretation is necessary (the CPU can execute the programs directly, only memory access and I/O need to be changed).

Yes, that's what I meant. I know that VM stuff generally isn't quick anyways (I work with VM sessions every day... they're a pain in the arse)

As for resources to run Mac's GUI -- yeah, it uses some. But what I find interesting about each version of OS X is that each new version runs *faster* on older hardware than the previous version -- even with more eyecandy in each version (ie, Expose in Panther, Dashboard in Tiger) I... can't say that for Windows.

XP takes about 40 mins to install on my PC. Add in the drivers and apps, up to maybe 1:15.
Why buy a mac if you want to dual boot? Macs are inferior hardware-wise, I'm sure they still will be when they switch to x86. If you want a PC, buy a PC!

Uh, so you can run OS X Which you can't do on anything other than a Mac. Being able to dual boot to Windows just means that you don't have to buy a PC in addition to the Mac.

And I <3 my allegedly inferior Mac

Buuuuuuurn.

It'd be kinda cool to run Windows or Linux on a Mac. Since Macs use all standardized hardware, it would significantly reduce hardware-related problems. Then you just need to have a version of that OS designed with Mac hardware in mind, and stability would skyrocket. (Probably 90% of bugs in any OS are due to having support for 8 billon different kinds of everything. )

Hrm, I guess my hardware in my system is very well supported by Windows then? Maybe if you buy generic crap, you have an assload of problems. Buying name-brand products (Gigabyte, MSI, Sapphire, AMD, nVidia, etc) must really cut down on stability and lag issues

And I'd use a Mac, but you know, I do more than just surf the web, check email, and use IM clients. I game.

There ARE games for the Mac you know... but it does take longer for a lot of them to get there.

They'd all be useless on my particular Mac unfortunately, the old G4 iBook is about as gutless as Macs come. (Must... get... powerbook...... yesss....)

And yes, people who buy generic crap *do* tend to have an "assload of problems". Which is why I can't fathom why people buy some of it. But, people do, and I've seen all kinds of wacky, random shit in people's computers... I'm always surprised when it works properly, too.

For some reason, the whole Mac game stuff is like a couple months off from PC release dates.

Anyways, has anyone ever had a Mac-Mini? I have a projection system in my household, and I think it would be very pimp if I could hook a Mac up to it... Imagine 100+ Inches of Mac glory... *Drools* Plus, it'd be a lot cheaper then buying a whole Mac setup. Like, you wouldn't need a screen or speakers. Wireless keyboards and mouses are pretty cheap, too.

Most people like to play games that others are playing though.
GW and RO won't run on macs, and WOW on macs seems to get nothing but complaints in the forums.

Yeah, but Windows has to support that generic crap too, which means more code to write, test, and fail. If it was running on a Mac it'd only have to support Mac hardware.

Don't bother Tarale, most "Mac suck bla bla" people are ignorant, which this topic proves once again . I wonder if they ever used one, or seen one for that matter.
And the "there are no games on Mac" thing is getting old, at least try to be original .
