Here's my desktop

There's a lot of junk I don't use on there. I've had this wallpaper since after I saw the movie but I'm too lazy to change it.

I use WindowBlinds, which, when you're not switching themes or anything, doesn't take up more than a couple megabytes, at least for me. Unfortunately, it's shareware, so there's two ways to go about getting the full version if you end up being interested in it I've never used StyleXP, so I don't know how much of a resource hog it is, but it may be worthwhile to look into WindowBlinds.

I ended up changing my wallpaper as soon as I got home last night, so take that for what you will. Before it was a grassy field with blue sky, but not Bliss Now, I've got two filetypes of the picture. Reason being that one has better image quality but a larger size (.png), and the other is the opposite (.jpg). Click the link you want to see.

:: My Desktop, 1.82Mb, .png
:: My Desktop, 261.12Kb, .jpg

Those are hosted on zShare, as it's the only site I know of that allows more than 1Mb to be uploaded at a time Yes, it was 1:05 a.m. when I took those screenshots, as I didn't even realize what time it was until looking at the clock in the taskbar The taskbar is normally offscreen (it's on autohide), so I brought it out for the screenshot. All it's covering up is the shortcuts to "My Computer", "My Documents", "Recycle Bin", and a couple zip files of ROM patches I haven't used yet, among other things.

I usually change the Icon Package, WindowBlinds skin, cursor, and wallpaper about once a month, but for now, that's what my desktop looks like

Edit: Before anyone points out the version info in the lower right corner, yes, I own a legal copy of XP I turned that on with System Mechanic, then uninstalled the program since it was messing a couple things up, and now I don't know how to go about turning it off.

For the first thing, try out http://www.myfilehut.com/, they're at like a 20 meg per file limit at the moment, but it might change if it gets abused (250 megs total storage, any file type, adult content allowed with certain limits, and hotlinking allowed XD). This is a 6 meg file hosted there.

As for the second thing, try going to 'run' in the start menu, and run msconfig, look in either startup or services, then uncheck what looks like that program.

I'll keep that site in mind, but I prefer sites of that sort that don't require registration I did sign up at ImageShack mainly to upload screenshots of StepMania results, so I suppose it won't hurt to register at myFileHut in the event that I need to

As for trying to disable the program in msconfig, I already uninstalled System Mechanic, and after doing that, I did a check in a few places (msconfig included) to make sure nothing was left behind, and I didn't find anything. The actual description in the program to enable or disable the version display was something like "In pre-release builds of Windows 2000 and and above, the version information was displayed in the bottom-right corner of the screen, then hidden upon release. Check this box to show your current operating system version all the time.". By that description, it makes it seem like either there's a registry key that controls that, or the program added something to do that. The only way I can see to disable it right now is to reinstall the program then uninstall it right after disabling that option, but for right now, it's not too bothersome. Winamp covers most of the text anyways, as can be seen in the screenshots.

Thanks for the suggestion though

Yeah, a UxTheme.dll patcher. It patches the uxtheme.dll on your hard disk so you could use non-Microsoft visual styles. Somply download a VS and extract into C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes

Neowin UxTheme Patcher - Known to be reliable. You'll need to run it every time you update your service pack... and you'll need to download a new version once a service pack is released.

A new experimental one - (Posted on OSBetaArchive) I haven't yet heard a problem with it. What it does is dynamically patch uxtheme without a pre-set list of patch locations (what the Neowin one does). Theoritically, this should work with a new service pack without a new version... unless Microsoft changes their pattern of uxtheme.dll blocks.

Mine's Boring

I recently reinstalled Windows, so I haven't had a chance to theme it or anything. I think for the first couple days all my FireFox downloads were set to go to the Desktop, so I got a lotta junk on it already.

Here's Mine. It's a bit stretched since I just switched to 1600x1200 (19-inch monitors pwn, at least compared to 16); I can't really find any high-quality images of that person. (Maybe I should look. ) Normally I use a cool desktop with randomly-changing images and stats on it, but I'm in the process of remaking it.

My desktop keeps switching back to the default blue one though. The image is still selected but it doesn't show up until I go into the desktop properties and change something. Any idea what that's about?

Oh and before you ask about the blanked-out icons, I can't tell you. Sworn to secrecy. Sorry.
