Oh... Wow. I never even thought of that.
It seems like as the years go on we remember less and less of that day.

Perhaps because other tradgedies and events have pulled our attention away? The tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, the War in Iraq?

I won't deny that it was a major event, but no event is important enough to dwell on year after year after year. I mean no disrespect to those who died or lost loved ones, and their grief is understandable (if still a little prolonged), but life goes on and on until we die and if we keep our heads up our pasts it'll leave us behind.

Seriously though. I see no reason why the killing of 3000 US civilians should be accepted as an illegitimate act when the "official opinion" in the US is that killing over three times as many Iraqi civilians and "terrorism suspects" was none. (My actual position is that neither of them was, but the Iraq war, the lies that were used to justify it, the stupidity that led people into believing it and how the US acted after the fall of Saddam ("Let's get the oil business running and leave the Iraqis to their fate. They are of no interest to our economy anyways."), all together, were much, much worse of a crime.)

All I see about this whole business is a war some conspirative circle of terrorists started, and the US government, being not able to locate them, having had to abreact on some random countries "down there" with the nice side-effect of supporting the own economy and "getting the voters in line".

I remember when 9/11 happened. I was at school, 12 years old, and in a geography lesson.

Guess what we were learning about?

The world's tallest buildings. Near the end of the lesson, our teacher found out from another that the twin towers had been attacked. When he told our class, we just all burst out laughing. For us, back then, it was the funniest thing ever. Even though now we realise how serious it was.

The next day, everyone was manically happy and excited about the fact world war 3 may be imminent.

We need to start naming tsunamis; I'm tired of referring to it as "the tsunami."
Here's hoping my comment is enough to end the upcoming debate between Legion and blackhole89 before it begins.

So sayeth the man who thinks it was about oil. Really now, I thought people had seen past that at this point.

Only Bush will really know what this war was about. But without much doubt, it was about a few things. For starters, Bush needed a distraction from the "Osama hunt" which up to this point has been a miserable fKitten Yiffer. So he used this war to make people feel safer and that he was actually doing his job on the war on terrorism. You pretty much said it in your last paragraph. What better way to make people feel better about terrorism than to take out a "ruthless dictator who supplied massive WMDs to terrorists"?

And then of course there's the whole "finishing what his father started". I don't think I have to elaborate much there. Throw in the assassination attempt for the revenge factor.

It was also probably to show our power and to gain more control through fear tactics. When 9/11 happened, we didn't look so invincible anymore. With this war, we're now percieved as a "Don't listen to us and we'll make you pay." type of superpower.

As for oil? Nope. If he wanted to start a war for oil, it would have been against Saudi Arabia. At it's peak, Iraq only produced less than 3% of the world's oil supply. If we wanted any of it, it would have been FAR easier to get a contract for it and not go to war with them. Furthermore, the oil that's left in Iraq is vital to it's reconstruction so it's not like we're tapping the hell out of it. Or using any of it for that matter.

If the war was about oil, then explain how things are far worse then they were before the war started. All the oil in Iraq wouldn't make much of a difference when it comes to our oil crisis.

As for the positive aspect of your post, I totally do agree.
Concerning oil... Iraq still is one of the two-three countries which are supposed to have the largest oil reserves underground. And the US government/industry, I assume, was pretty much in course of the fact the US, out of all countries, will be the ones most heavily affected when oil starts running out.

I didn't notice it was 9/11 until I came online a few minutes ago . That was freshman year it happened in HS..talking about it and it was cold that morning too. It had already happened I think by 8 AM here but I remember my mom saying something about it at 7 AM when we were getting ready for school.

Blah to the war.

WAR ON IRAQ?
WHAT BLASPHEMY!

Really, though, major events can never be forgotten...
Like with JFK's assasination, they made a movie about it like waaay after the event.

So, 9/11 still has to have a memorial made, and a movie made about it.
Leonardo DiCaprio as Osama, anyone?

On my calendar, it says today is "Grandparents Day."
What a nice day for that to land on.

Meh, this day hasn't really been big for a few years now. When it happened, I was in 7th grade, woke up and started to get ready for school, only to hear my dad tell me to turn on the TV. When I did, that's what I saw. Bleh.
