www.bluehost.com would have given us ssh access, php, etc.. all for $6.99/mo It would NOT have given us the access controls we wanted and the server flexibility. For example, development is currently done via the svn source code control system. People check in changes and they are reflected instantly on the website This avoids requiring developers to have ftp, ssh, or frontpage access and lets us give out seperate username/passwords for each person working on the boards. It also resolved various encoding/internationalization issues that were happening. More importantly it allows us to set on a directory or file bases who is allowed to "read" or "change" the files in the source tree. This let us check in the complete php source tree including database passwords and prevent the possibility of even trusted developers from leaking those passwords. Finally, since all changes are transactional, if a mistake is made it can be easily rolled back out of the server and consistancy is maintained So, given the above, there were ZERO providers that gave us this kind of control. Oh, how exactly does gzip save CPU? gzip burns CPU to save bandwidth which, as we have recently talked about, is not really a issue since we are only doing about 90G/mo Turning on the gzip features increases our CPU consumption and increases latency since the entire php file is rendered and compressed before transmission is started. In the non-gzip case, it streams the data as it is being rendered. Again, thank you for your support |

well you did not state this before... and just for the record, I provided that kind of stuff for free, lol. but as far as GZIP. it does NOT increase latency. I have gzip on on Globally on my server. the .001 seconds longer it takes gzip to compress 60K of html is less time than it takes to send TEN times the packets over the wire. Unless your server is like a Pentium 100 with 16 megs of ram you will notice nothing but an INCREASE in speed and responsiveness from your website. Imagine a dialup user in a worse case scenario Would you rather take .001 seconds to gzip the html so they can download it in 1.5 seconds, or leave it off so that it takes them almost FIFTEEN seconds to download JUST the html portion of the page? Gzip is your friend. |
