Why give them back? Keep them saved up for any other board-related expenses you may encounter. You never know when a hard disk will fail or something.

Mouse, 3 gigs a day is bullshit for this forum, it never used more than 15 in a MONTH when I hosted it. And the page views are approximately 25% higher so that's like 20 Gigs at BEST per MONTH.

Lunarpages will support this forum, as I've stated about 50 times now.

Turn PHP GZip on like you should have had on all this time anyway.

Notice that the people who responded, were responding prior to Mouse posting his error, and Atma probably was responding around the same time Mouse posted, look at their times, they're close enough, and that's what happened.

It doesn't matter. We're giving tRO the boot and putting just the board on it's own VPS server which should be around 80% cheaper then the current setup. $40 a month should be more affordable, considering our (very) high cpu use along with the 90-100gb per month of transfer, this should turn out to be a good choice.

OMFG BUY AN 8 DOLLAR HOSTING ACCOUNT
AND TURN ON GZIP

IT WILL USE 25 GIGS A MONTH AND THIS FORUM DOES NOT NOT NOT USE THAT MUCH CPU GOD

for fucks sake

Report for: http://forums.networkchaos.net/thread.php?id=12658
Result
The webpage is COMPRESSED / GZIPPED!

>> Savings: 88%

Filesize: 61.9KB [7.6KB] html / text only

instead of 62K of HTML it's EIGHT K of html.

Gzip does NOT use that much more CPU and furthermore, that's not even your problem it's your webhosts.

But I have gzip turned on globally and when I hosted this board as well as mine which had half again as much traffic as this one my load average sat at .00001 constantly

For people who are having trouble understanding, Erk isn't asking to host Acmlm's, he's just saying to turn on PHP Gzip to turn the CPU pig into a CPU guinea pig. I think it's simple.

I have to agree with Erk, why pay $40 a month, when you turn one option on, and only have to spend 1/4 as much money on hosting.

well let's think abou thtis for a minute.

a VDS still gives them a server to play with, albeit a virtual server a server nontheless which is NOT NECESSARY.

And Hyper, surely you don't believe something like that...

If it were that simple they would have done it....

Think of how many dozens of situations where simple things would have obviated or alleviated the situation and they were not done.

Laff

It IS that simple I own and operate my own WEBHOSTING business

don't even try to act like I don't know.

I even pasted conclusive PROOF not 2 posts ago.... it took the HTML from 62K to 8K just by turning it on.

It is that simple

they just want a VDS to play with now instead of a full server.

either way

AN 8 DOLLAR LUNAR PAGES ACCOUNT WOULD SUFFICE

Any variety of cheap hosting solutions would be permissible if he is correct about PHP GZIP.

The virtual server was a "requirement" due to the controls we wished to maintain over various aspects of the web site. The cheaper hosting solutions did not give us the access control's we wanted even withen the acmlm development community

So, give us a fricken break

that's not true you cannot legitimately justify your need for a VDS versus standard hosting.

The ONLY thing a VDS gives you over a normal hosting account is the ability to SSH

and there are several providers that ofer that as well
