It's not too important, but I'm telling this odd story anyway. It's easiest to do in a step-by-step format and excluding irrelevant details like switching of cases, hard drives, etc. 1- Went to a computer store because my old PIII with no AGP couldn't keep up on new games 2- Got an Athlon XP processor, mobo, and memory 3- Set up the system and it came up IIRC 1399mhz or so. 4- Bought used 2000+, runs at 1.7ghz + 256kb cache 5- (much later) Put old cpu in different mobo, says it's a 2500+ @ 1.8ghz and 512kb cache Idle temps - 2000+ is approx. 120 F, "2500+" is 134 F. I'm trying to figure out why this is the case. There are several possible anwsers I can think of. 1- Somebody swapped the cpu with a better one while it was quietly waiting to be installed on another mobo 2- The processor really is being overclocked unintentionally. But that doesn't explain the higher cache size... Whatever it means, it's good! I'm not going to argue with a free boost of this magnitude. How much overclocking leeway does a cpu have if it's running at these temps? AFAIK, both are on stock cooling. |

134°F is about 56°C, which is a bit hot. My Sempron runs at 1.7ghz and averages 45°C. You might consider adding some case fans. | |||

Wow, that's really odd. If it's running at ~56 C while idle, you shouldn't try overclocking it until you find a way to cool your CPU better. It's a good idea to keep your idle temp < 50. Most people run from 40C up to 60C while on a full load. You'd do alright running at a the mid 50s[on a full load], but remember: more heat shortens your CPU's lifespan. So, I'd go out and buy more efficient cooling for the system. (edited by Crim~ on 09-07-05 06:11 AM) |
