Zsnes, I prefer the way it works and the menus and all. I used Snes9x only a few times with games that didn't want to work in Zsnes.

I haven't played the Snes9X. I should try just to see which one I like best. I'll probably most likely stick with Zsnes. Since the guy that told me about emulators told me this one, there must be some kind of reason. ZSnes is probably better.

I prefer the ZSNES. It can take screenshots and has a fast forward button. I also liked taking off the layers for use.

I like Snes9x more because I find the windows environment more attractive than Zsnes'. About the only thing I need Zsnes for is ZMV creation (I'm not sure if the post 1.39 versions of snes9x support them)

ZSNES has far more features. So I'm going with that

The first emulator I ever used was SnesX. Even when I'd never used any other emulators, I still thought it was crap. I played games very rarely until I found ZSNES. SnesX always ran at at rediculously low framerate for me, and was just lacking in the smooth-running department. For example, when I'd tried to make the screen larger, the game would become even slower! To be fair, I've never given SnesX a second chance. I'm sure there have been many advancements, and most of my previous gripes have probably been eliminated, but I still prefer ZSNES because I've grown so accustomed to it. Even when it was only available in DOS format, I didn't mind. It was still better. And once the Windows version came out, it was perfect for me. ZSNES has had fast-forward, rewind, easy layer deactivation, multiplayer mode, combination shortcut keys, movie recording, and a simple system for quicksaving and quickloading save states and ROMs for some time now. In addition, they've (relatively) recently implemented two pretty awesome features: the ability to read zipped ROMs, and automatically patching ROMs with .ips' of the same name. Maybe I'll give SnesX a test sometime soon, just to see how far it's come in the last three or four years. Either way, I doubt it'll be able to astound me by enough to shift my preferance. ZSNES, hands down. |

The emulators have most of the same people working on them now (Nach seems to have his name on 90% of the WIP changelogs for both), and are getting many of the same fixes and updates. Anything that runs on Snes9x will run on ZSNES in my experience, with one exception: SDD-1 games (Star Ocean, Street Fighter Alpha, couple others). I played SO on Snes9x, but the SDD-1 support still seems pretty spotty (probably why the SDD-1 version of ZSNES isn't released yet), and I had graphical problems all over the place. It still runs smoother in ZSNES using the graphics pack. I do have one issue with ZSNES: Has anybody else been getting corrupted bitmaps instead of screenshots from the last few WIP releases? ZSNES is easier to use and faster. However, the speed edge only matters on slower computers. And it has a lot of issues, such as Autofire not working. In addition, it likes to bugger up on NT-Based systems and stuff, even with the windows version. BUT!!! Snes9X is far more stable. But neither of those lets you do opposite direction glitches, even if you want to. (pressing two directions opposite each other at the same time to get strange results) So technically, you'd need Snes9X, ZSNES and an emulator capable of allowing two opposite directions to be done at once to get the most out of it. |

One thing that I think Snes9x doesn't have is a chat feature in netplay mode. That's a major bonus for Zsnes, along with ZMVs. I still use snes9x out of habit though.

I would definitely say Snes9x, I hate the Dos-like interface in Zsnes, so I only use it for dumping files. I also seem to get better Cheat Results when searching in Snes9x, I don't know if it really has a different outcome, but it sure seems like it (I seem to get 0 Results more often with Zsnes). I also don't like having my Save State Loading and Saving buttons as the same key for every Slot, I tend to overwrite SaveStates more often that way (and it also takes longer to switch between Save Slots; because in Snes9x, you don't have to switch at all). I don't use any of the Snes9X versions after 1.39, because it seems that the speed has decreased a bit, but ver. 1.39 suits my needs. (edited by Atma X on 05-29-04 06:25 PM) |

The speed may have decreased but the sound emulation, at least on my machine has improved dramatically. And that is music to my ears. (er did I just make a pun goddamit)

ZSNES has frozen my computer several times in just three days of use, whereas I've used SNES9x for years without a problem. Also -- and this is inexcusable -- ZSNES uses some non-standard bitmap fonts for menus and directories. Heaven forbid you should be running a PC with non-Roman characters, which appear fine in S9X but not in ZSNES. You won't be able to find your files! |

Snex9X works better in Linux or what? Well, I have honestly to try the latest version of Snes9X, and I should test both ZSnes and Snes9X's perfoamnce in Linux. |
