Something Awful is not well known (at first sight) to be particularly outwardly generous. The truth is that they have collected for charity before, and have raised seriously impressive amounts. When Katrina struck New Orleans on Monday, the Something Awful servers went down, probably destroyed due to their location in the New Orleans area. Since then, Lowtax has been updating the interim site and has set up a donation fund for the Red Cross.

At last count, today, the Goons had donated a staggering $27,000. It's worth dropping by to see Lowtax's bitching about Paypal freezing his account when he tried to donate all that money to Red Cross. It may just be a static page of HTML, but it's without a doubt the best SA in ages

I *NEVER* read SA, Kas.

But the PayPal story was not only sad, but hilarious as well. God forbid people are going to try to make a quick buck off of a charity drive, especially from a website which has a good track record regarding these kinds of things.

I'd bail if a site ever asked me for THAT information. Oy.

I read SA for Comedy Goldmine, Photoshop Phriday and Weekend Web. Honestly, they're the only weeklies worth reading. It's extremely rare that they actually post serious comment on the front page, and it's good to see them personally responding.

It's sad with the amount of hatemail cruising Lowtax's way, and how Paypal are so conveniently teamed up with a group that takes a slice out of donations. It's sad to see all the big shots all banding together to make more money for each other. The fact that this has happened now show that some people really do have no shame.

I have a love/hate relationship to SA. But heh.

If I would be donating, I would be donating directly to a charity orginization. Sure this was goodwill, but considering paypal was in the mix... who is wellknown to freeze a account that get's too big. ;

"Our real site is either underwater or strapped to the roof of a stolen vehicle that is also underwater."

I like their self-irony thought.

Don't donate to charity for good reasons
Reason #1: They pocket a good deal of the donations and pay no taxes on their looting, which is pure bs. So the middle class has to pay all the taxes while corporation CEOs of companies such as Red Cross, MIcrosoft, e.g., get massive tax breaks. Unless you are one of these rich shits, then I don't see how you can disagree with me on this matter, at least.

I´d shoot them if they tried. I´d probably donate to a charity organization too as I don´t have an internet account on a bank.

But it´s great that SA collects money for the people fo New Orleans.

SamuraiX: If people don't take you seriously on the tRO boards, they sure as hell won't take you seriously here.

There's nothing wrong with reputable charities and if you're really paranoid, send in the money in person.

No, if you're really paranoid, send supplies through a smaller charity, like a church drive or something.

It was a joke, hence the second link. Instead of charities, they should have a company that makes better made buildings, or not build below sea level cities...next to the ocean. It is a problem waiting to happen. I just don't donate to charity, since if I was in the position to need it, charity wouldn't help me, since I'm a minority.

Lowtax is a serious asshole. (Does anyone remember double you dee em a and his comments about it?) But I guess he has a heart of gold, and not just shit and comedy.

I love everything SA and was an avid member of the forums. It's down now.

Edit: WHAT THE FUCK IT'S BACK UP?
