Well, I need to buy a car. I WAS saving up to buy something like a Nissan Silvia, or a Skyline, but it turns out I need a car a little more immediately than that -- those cost $6,000 upwards..... I have $800 saved. So I'm going to need to get something cheaper at least for the moment. I'm probably just going to get a cheap Mitsubishi Magna. Now, I've never bought a car myself before (I had an ex who kinda bought two cars for me though -- one of which I didn't want) so I'm not quite sure what I'm doing here. I'm a little scared I'm going to buy a lemon. I've looked in the trader, but.... I was just wondering, what kind of stuff do you look for when buying a car? What kinds of questions do you ask? I know this all sounds silly, but... meh, I don't know all that much about cars. Now, if I were buying a computer I'd feel more at home... |

Make sure you check prices of different years and models of cars before going to the dealer. If you look up that this certain car should be around $1500 or something, but the salesman says $3000 or nothing, just walk away from it. They're obviously trying to get money from you because they think you'll accept whatever they offer. Also make sure the miles aren't so racked up that chances are it will die on you immediately. Then just.. whatever you want it to have, look for it. Keep in mind you can go to more than one dealership, don't let one place take all your money. Not that I've ever bought a car, just things I picked up on. Somehow. My two cents.. good luck. |

I don't know how far $800 takes you down-under, but over here, you can't get much for that price. Old German diesels (VWs, Benzes) run forever. You can buy one with 200,000 miles (~322k km) and not worry about it for another 100,000 at least. They are fuel efficient and reliable. Since you're looking in that range, you want to make sure that there's NO RUST, especially structural. Poke around with a broom handle, especially on "corners", for bondo or other rust-repairs. Immediatly reject a car with any such work, you don't know what else is covered up. Make sure the brakes are fine (do a panic stop), make sure it can go on the highway without any troubles and no smoke (or if it's an OLD diesel, as little smoke while accelerating as possible and none at speed). Ask? For maintanance records. A car with all its receipts and records can tell you a LOT. The more done, the better because it's less YOU have to do (for example, recent timing chain or belt is a good thing, so is brakes, tires, oil change, etc). You want to make sure it had its oil changed AT LEAST every 7,000 miles (any more than that can cause serious engine damage). Take the dipstick out and check the oil level before and after a highway trip to measure consumption and quality. If it's as black as coffee, don't buy it. |

Well, I know I should be able to pick up a Mitsubishi Magna for anywhere between $500 and $900 from what I've been looking at so far. My housemate is pretty good with cars and he says that a Magna should be fairly decent as they're reliable, common (easy to get parts) and don't have a cult following (so the prices aren't unnecessarily inflated). I'm not hugely interested in a Magna per se, (In fact, I find them positively dull looking) but if it gets me from A to B, that's all I need. I've started swim training again, but in order to keep it up, I'll need to be able to get to the swim centre by 7am somehow, and then drive into work after.... so Taryn need car... any car good.. yes... Most of the Magnas I've seen have been private sales so far... all I'm looking for really is a decent, clean car, mechanically sound, automatic. I don't know what else I should be looking for... I can get the RAA to do a check on a car for a sum of money too.... |

Oh god, used car salesmen O_o... If they're reluctant to answer questions: fuck'm If time is of the essense: fuck'm Personally, being from LA, I'd look into classifieds ads (people are a lot more honest here than salesmen, and will probably give you a fairly better deal), and police repot auctions. These can be kind of a gamble, but in most cases they will run the engine for you, and tell you a little about what may or may not be wrong with it. This is one of the cheapest ways to obtain a vehicle, but like I said, it's risky unless you're a car person (so bring one with you ^_- ) |

Well... I do not know much about cars (like value, gas milage, and all the stuff), but my parents have set strong examples for me of how to pick one when I become of age. My mother recently bought a Chrysler Pacifica. That car is great! You may not want to buy it if you don't plan on lugging around a couple extra people (it sits 6), but Chrysler probably makes some other good cars that seat less. Look around some Chrysler dealers and see what you think... Also try Honda. They are good. I might get a truck from them when I come of age... Which seems like a million years from now. |

Well, I have a car. It's a Mitsubishi Magna. It's not spectacular, but then you don't get much for $700. It runs fine, it's clean, the radio works (but forgets which station you've set it to when you start the car). The CV joints need a little bit of help. Otherwise, it's all fine. Nice... cheap.. car. Pretty good for what I paid for it, will show you a photo later maybe (have to take one first) |

Hm. I suppose that's the advantage of living in a car factory town. All the GMs are dirt cheap. But I would've gone with a euro-diseal. Saves you an ass load of money and they're more reliable than a Russian hooker (which are notoriously reliable). |

Maybe I'm just paranoid but I wouldn't buy a car for less than $1000. The only things I ever see cheaper than that are $500 and clearly don't run. Zer0wned: I knew a guy who bought a car out of the paper once. 10 years later, BAM! Herpes. < |

I wouldnt' buy a car less than 1,000 either. Mine was pretty cheap and ran good for 3,000 but that's the lowest I'd buy a car for. That is a pretty good price for it to actually work. My dad is the one who found my car and made sure everything worked and sounded fine. I hope you checked everything really good . Very good deal if everything was fine. |

I'm not really sure, but last I checked, very very few petrol stations here even sell Diesel, so I'm not sure if me getting a Diesel car is a good idea... And yeah, CV joints are not something to be taken lightly, but for a car of my type, it shouldn't be too expensive to fix either. And yeah, I didn't exactly want to buy such a cheap car either, but like I said I don't get much of a choice in the matter at the moment, I need car NOW, and it will take me another 4 months to save up for a decent one... So, this will do for the moment. I think I'll focus on my credit rating so I can get a loan. A person my age, with a permanent fulltime job on my salary -- should be able to get a loan for anything I want. Mmm... Subaru Impreza... |

My moms old 88' Toyota Corolla went for $1,000. As Yiffy Kitten said I dont know how far money goes where you live but here its not that cheap. I would try to save up more. Work some overtime if possible or such. |

Yeah, I'll get a loan eventually but I have to clear my credit rating first, it has nearly $1000 of defaults on it, so I can't get a loan now... Once it's cleared, I should be fine with getting a loan, and I'm considering getting a brand new car. Maybe an Impreza.... |
