I don't kfow exactly what blackhole89 plans to do, but the music import filter will most likely just import from SMW for now, as it varies only slightly from the N-SPC, and the other formats are very different from it.

Here's an incomplete list of games which use the N-SPC format:
F-Zero
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Mario Paint
Stunt Race FX
Super Mario All-Stars
Super Mario Kart
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Super Metroid
Super Scope 6
Yoshi's Safari

The Super Nintendo test ROM does as well, although it probably only has two tracks.

No Kirby or Donkey Kong Country games seem to use the N-SPC format, sorry.

Thanks for the list! This will save me eons of trying random SPC's once SS is released.

Yoshi's Island, Legend of Zelda: A link to the past, and Super Metroid are enough to make me happy.

It's a shame that Kirby games (at least to your knowledge) don't use the N-SPC format, I am crazy over that world 4-4 song in Kirby's Dreamland 3. I could try hand-recomposing that song, I did manage to make a (not-too-good sounding but perfectly sequenced) midi out of it, I could use that as a map to recreate it.

Thanks again, now I'll just wait for SS to come out. How much longer, BlackHole89, do you think we have to wait? Maybe a few weeks? Certainly not several months, though.

blackhole89 has said that this will be a Music Editor, not a Music Importer. Also you can compose your own music,I wonder if this program would let you save our compostions so we can share them?

This little list is going to be VERY useful. *starts coding an SMW music import filter*
He's working on an importing filter from N-SPC to SMW's derivate N-SPC system. This is what I'm going to love about SST.

With SPC ripping APPs from Zophar's, you could rip your own music from your own game and distribute them as SPC files.

"SMW import filter" could simply be so it reads information from the SMW rom. You have to import the data so the editor can read it, yes? Saving it to a file or saving the newly imported data to another rom is another matter entirely.

And... again... it's "SMW import filter". It will only help read from SMW, unless other games happen to have the exact same engine.

As for the N-SPC thing, in that format is the music all located in one bank? Or do you specify the hex location of each song? How does Solar Soundtrack locate the music data?

I searched and searched through that ROM and SPC dumps from it and couldn't find anything resembling N-SPC data, so I think it uses a totally different format.

Could it be compressed? Kirby games are known for being a little funny.

I would say this, but it would be uncompressed when looking at an SPC dump, and there is nothing resembling N-SPC data in any of the SPC dumps I've made of the game.

Um, Kirby Super Star is N-SPC. Thanks, just trust me on this the ONLY difference is a few of the unused byte commands have been designed to do drum-kit related things, as far as I can tell. Also, if you want, add Yoshi's Cookie, Tetris+Dr Mario, Mario Paint, Power Rangers, BS Zelda and Tetris Attack to that list og compatible games (though TA's works...a little differently, I think. I havn't fully figured out that one's workings, the rest, 100%, it's N-SPC) I know a bunch more, I'm just too lazy to go through my mind right now. Can't even remember what I've hacked any more...

edit: also, not to get anyone's hopes up, but half the stuff you all want to import (kirby, dk, etc) will sound like shit with SMW's instruments...so, unless you actualy know how to port BRR samples (not even remotely complicated..) or Solar Soundtrack adds such a feature, it'll sound pretty nasty also keep in mind you need SPACE for such things. No expanding the SPC program, the chip will have PMS and barf

This is what I fear about such a porting feature..people just adding random music to their hacks but whatever. so long as even the tiniest remote instance of a midi port is never created, i'll be able to sleep at night (if i hear vgmusic ports into hacks, people will die )

@BigMattrizzle: AFAIK, all Nintendo Games for the SNES uses the N-SPC format including the DKC Series, Zelda, Super Metroid, StarFox, the Kirby Series + the Mario Series.

If you just ported all the instruments and music from another N-SPC game, it'd run, right? Or would that screw up the sound effects?

AFAIK if you ported all the SPC data from one game from another you'd take the SFX with it. Which means that none of the sounds would match; SMW would call for the jump SFX and it'd get something totally different.

Maybe in 5 years, there will be a USF importer. SM64 Final-Bowser would fit right in for Bowser.
