Final Fantasy was one of those games I some how got my hands on, but never fully understood how or why I had it in the first place. With no booklet or even a lousy box to go off of, I was completly in the dark with this game. Former experiences with video games consisted solely of Mario and Double Dragon. You know, Straight forward linear bad-ass action. I hated it. Pure, nonlogical hate. It made absolute no sense within the first ten minutes, thus I tossed it aside for many years. Emulators changed the way I felt about most games I considered too tough or flat out obnoxious. It leveled out the playing field with the tag team combo of Quick Saves and Game Genies. Final Fantasy is one of those games. not utilizing the Game Genie, but totally whoring the Quick Save feature, This game now seems like NES genius. So far, I need to find the Vampire and kill him. Or unkill him, i never understood the "undead" concept. Any thoughts? |

I was the same way with Dragon Warrior, actually. I appreciate it now for what it is, but the first time I got my hands on it I kind of thought it was cool but really didn't know what I was supposed to be doing. I kept finding myself killed on some penninsula by skeleton knights. A few years later, after playing through FF1, I started to slowly understand the game, but it wasn't until I found someone with the guidebook that I really got into it.

I used to play these games, but after experiencing the western counterpart I realized how underdeveloped and restrictive they were.

I would have to agree, there are good Japanese RPGs but I feel they are too linear.

Well, the ones I like are the ones which venture into more pure adventure territory like Seiken Densetsu and Terranigma.

Let me put it this way: the first FF game I ever played was Mystic Quest. Everything seemed like a step up from there on out. |

FF1 is the only game of the series that I have played in any detail. Dinked around with FF7 when that came out. Watched a friend play FFX. Oh, and I guess there is the movie too. Like a beautiful piece of steaming poop. Interesting to look at, yet leaves a nasty taste in your mouth. |

If you're going to play FF1, you might as well just play the GBA version of it; it's the definitive one as far as content/features goes. I still like FF1 but part of that has to do with the fact it was one of the first RPG's I played. That and Dragon Warrior (although I'll admit that you might as well play the GBC versions of that, II and III if you want the best ones). |

Nintendo Power repeatedly creamed itself over Final Fantasy when it was released, and I'd always wanted to play this ZOMG MOST BESTEST RPG EVER. I finally got to play it around freshman year of college, and though I generally enjoyed it, I thought it was overrated, and it had several glaring annoyances that bothered me. Thanks to the horrifically slow battle engine, fighting (or even running away from a bunch of enemies with multiple attacks) could get quite tedious. The magic system made no sense to me at all. To me, it seemed like going to the store and being told that you couldn't use five $1 bills to buy a $5 item. (Years later, I found out that it was based on D&D-style charges, where a magical item can be used a certain number of times. For example, you might get 10 fire spells out of your flame staff. I still think the FF implementation was unnecessarily restrictive, though.) Oh, and I hated those blarping Gas Dragons with a passion...and giving the final boss a Cure4 is CHEAP AS ALL HELL. I actually did manage to beat the game on the NES, though. Maybe I was spoiled by Dragon Warrior III. I loved that game when it was new, and I still love it years later. It's blazing fast, uses normal MP, and has similarly w00t party customization. Its difficulty curve is fair and gives you a fun challenge throughout. There's so much to see and do all over its ginormous map. And none of the bosses can undo all your hard beatdown work in one fell swoop. |

After you have finished it for a while you should try the Dawn of Souls (The GBA remake of 1 & 2). It adds some new features that the PSX remake of 1&2 didnt. |

Originally posted by Rydain To top it off, you're lucky if you only see two of them (in one battle I mean).
It's not that bad, since on the NES version it only restores 999 HP. That's three 9's, not four. Cure4 also has the added benefit of "Esuna," which cures all abnormal status ailments. Challenge-wise, the NES version is better suited, but for flash, either the PS port or the GBA port will work. My hate of the FF series starts and ends with the latest one in the series. That would be the one that all the countries have, not the one currently in development. |

Okay, I don´t really hate any FF game. I haven´t played that many. The first FF game I played was probably FFV if I´m not wrong. It´s a game with a pretty decent story but youy ca get bored of it. FFVI is probably one of the best FF I´ve played. FFVII is pretty awesome too with that story and all. But I can say that the old FF games are better than the new ones. |

Originally posted by Colleen The hell it isn't. Dawn of Souls is the most disappointing butchfest I've ever had the misfortune of playing. It's like Squeenix decided to remove every single bloody element of fun from the original, and replace it with a "hold A to beat game" system. It's awful. Go with the original or the PSX remake. Oh, and this should really go in the RPG forum. (edited by Private Adamant on 09-04-05 12:45 PM) |

I think if I would've grown up playing the earlier Final Fantasy's, I would have enjoyed them more this day (mainly 1 and 2). I just can't seem to get used to the extremely long amount of time the game takes, walking around, the battles, and stuff like that. The first Final Fantasy I played was VI, through emulation. I got pretty far, but for some reason eventually stopped playing it. Then I played VII and thought it was the greatest thing since poptarts, then played IX and thought the same thing. But, I eventually and finally got Anthology and played through VI completely, and it turned out to be [by far] my favorite Final Fantasy, heck, one of my top favorite RPG's. I love the game so much, I eventually bought an SNES copy of VI. So, I basically played the Final Fantasy's completely out of order, just because I didn't play a whole lot of RPG's back when I was younger. The order I've played them in, would probably be: 6, 7, 9, 8, 10, 4, 5, 1, 2. Fun fact: IV and VI are easily my top favorites. Yes, I am a gamer who can go back to play classics and RESPECT and LOVE them, even more than modern games. (a lot of people tend to not be that way. Seems like most gamers will enjoy whatever they played first, and grew up with, etc) (edited by Xeolord on 09-04-05 08:46 PM) |

It depends what party you have @ the original poster. I still need to play the non-PSX version of the true FF1; I don't think Haste is a spell in the real one, but if it is the hit rate increase is devastating to Bosses. If Dia or Rub is in there, use them, but I'd think Cure wouldn't work so well unless you have the fourth one. My favorite is IV, and it's the first one I ever played. I liked V's job system, but I disliked the actual story (but it is a lot more complex than IV, though I'm not sure if that's good or bad). VI has the reverse problem: the story is excellent, but the battle system is wonky (and Sabin's Blitzes pretty much ruin it, Square must've thought we'd be so poorly coordinated as to not realize how to key in fighting combinations correctly enough times to make it useful). I'm one of those annoying people that likes Aeris -way- too much, but the Materia system was fairly innovative (though the number of Slots, particularly the linkage requirement, made things more restrictive), so I managed to get through VII even after the 'incident' (I never played it again I was so pissed ). FF VIII's magic system -BLOWS-, and I'm very biased towards being able to use magic (particularly attack spells), so that one I also barely finished. FF IX has a nauseatingly cutesy aura around it, and I really started to notice the lack of enemies to fight (finding a group of 3 or 4 is a miracle) due to graphics limitations, but that one's ok (Vivi saves it ). I love FFX, the only problem with it is the linearity of Spira (it suffers the Magic Line problem, ya kinda just walk north for almost the entire game. I think the whole 'get all the Aeons' thing is really to circumvent the idea of going SOUTH from Besaid instead of north, which...takes you directly to Zanarkand. :x). Since I have an aberrant sexuality, I can see FFX-2 for what it really is: bleargh. Rikku's breasts do not phase me one bit, so I actually noticed the fact that all of the good spells and skills are Grid-only and you have to pass through the nodes EVERY BATTLE to use them. Ack! At least they have Cat Nip in there. FF XI is alright, but like most MMOs it requires waaaaay too much time to keep on top of. I mean, there's no end to it, and while many people like that idea I prefer definitive plot termination. FFI and IIj I've only played as the Origins package; I really like FFI and I can't stand FFIIj. Whoever voiced Maria in the FMV sequence...God, it sounds like she's on the verge of an orgasm throughout the entire clip. Listen to her breathing and you'll get the idea. FF IV is about as close to the 'core' rpg as I got. I like the older concept of roleplaying so that one suits me just perfect. |

Originally posted by Edea All the spells are in the original, though some of them (like Steel/TMPR) are bugged. Haste/FAST, however, has always been one of the best spells in the game. As for the Vampire, he's horribly weak, and you don't need any specific strategy to beat him. He has about 120 HP or something. Fire 3 kills him in one hit.
