Notice: This is a edited/copied entry of mine from GameFAQs. The boards there are plauged with casual computer users and/or n00bs so I'm going again in a place with actual intelligence.

I've been trying to make it work for months. I had downloaded it a long time ago, and some kind of error happens. Now that I got the file again, there's still an error.

BF2.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close.
We are sorry for the inconvenience.

AppName: bf2.exe
ModName: renddx9.dll

I'm not sure if it'll help, but the latest BF2demo download was from Gamespot.

My system is exactly the minimum required. Quoted directly from EA:

"Windows XP (32-bit) with Admin rights
1.7 GHz Pentium 4 / Athlon XP or greater
512 MB or more
460MB of HD Space
DirectX 9.0c compatible (*video)
DirectX 9.0c compatible (sound)
*Video
Video card must have 128 MB or more memory and one of the following chipsets:
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5700 or greater
ATI Radeon 8500 or greater"

This computer's video card is a 256 MB GeForce FX 5700LE. Double the memory. I googled it, and other people are having odd troubles with BF2 also. Check out the link: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=32&threadid=1625517&STARTPAGE=4&enterthread=y

Wierd. I should try BF1942 and see what it does. C'ya, I'll keep everyone up to date on any new developments in this ordeal.

BTW, the contents of Windows Error Reporting's file are saved onto my desktop. I'll send it to anyone who understands such technobabble.

Do you get any errors on install of the Demo (I did btw....) ? And have you tried reinstalling it?

I'm not sure, I didnt' have much luck with the demo myself, but the full game has been fine....

It seems Battlefield 1942 is fine on the menus, but "runs" at less than 1FPS during gameplay. That's on the absolute lowest settings: 640x480 16-bit color, no lightmaps, shortest view distance, etc. Fresh install too. Not a single mod or patch. My computer is over triple the minimum required for it. Definately poor programming by DICE or EA on both games. I don't have BFVietnam or any of it's variations to try.

Can somebody change the topic title? I've giving up on BF2 for now, and going to see what can help BF1942. Either that, or maybe I should move the discussion to my forums so Acmlm's don't get crowded?

Hmm... other games are working fine on the machine, I assume?

Can you also provide the specs of your machine?

Yeah, you only told us what graphics card you have. Tell us about your CPU, RAM, DirectX version, sound card, etc.

Also, did you upgrade your nVidia drivers? I *think* the BF2 demo comes with updated drivers which you may need to install. (Or have drivers newer than the ones provided)

Did you also try tweaking the graphics settings in-game?

Your post was very low on actual information.

I always forget not everyone knows my computer yet.
AMD Athlon XP 2000+
512MB RAM
DirectX 9.0c
Mad Dog Predator 5.1
Windows XP SP2
nVidia ForceWare 77.77

Odd, my video and sound drivers fail the WHQL signature. The video ones were downloaded right from nVidia. I'm actually having a boatload of other minor computer issues too. Autorun for CDs pops up a explorer window to view the directory, instead of loading autorun.inf when a disc has it. Funniest thing is how my USB hub behaves. I have to unplug for a split second after the desktop loads for any devices to be recognized. Once, the computer failed to boot and gave a BSOD until I left the hub off for the entire boot process. Something about IRQL not less or equal. Worse is how updating drivers needs a restart, and I hate doing that because my system takes forever before Windows itself is even loaded into memory!

Oh yeah, I can't tweak the BF2 settings unless it starts in the first place.
EA themselves said they have no idea why the game won't run on some computers. Mine isn't really high-end, but goes to show how $1000+ PCs aren't always that good.

Be sure to read the above carefully. It's packed with strange issues I'd like to get solved.

Can you post the entire message ?
Use the MS Knowledge Base to find solutions to that.

It named IRQs - you could try to switch any installed PCI devices - or if you have an IRQ conflict somewhere (this can be checked if you select "Run" from the Start Menu and type

msinfo32

Then check the Hardware Resources tab and the entry below it in the tree-structure.
Other than that I only can recommend to reinstall Windows XP - maybe a repair install can fix that. But having these nasty errors, I highly recommend you to backup your most important files; since the install may fail due to driver or any other problems and only resolving a full format and reinstallation of XP might help (do this only in the worst case and as a last solution).

What kind of motherboard do you have?

The USB stuff, I've had similar problems before. It's generally a driver issue. Though XP is known for a lot of little bugs cropping up at random. *renames thread*

I have no problems with BF1942 at all. It runs perfectly and beautifully, and it ran fine on my old video card (old vid card was an nVidia GF4 Ti4400, new is an ATi X800 XL).

Please, tell us what type of motherboard you have, and if your video card is PCI, PCI-Express x16, or AGP. Also, I assume that you have installed all the chipset drivers NEEDED for the motherboard?

Whew! Had to download the 267MB version 1.6 patch to make BF1942 run decently. It had that many bugs? What's next, a Missingno FPS? I'll have to get BF2's retail copy and see if it works. I don't care much for games where you're required to wait before spawning though. In case you didn't read my other thread, I'm on a fresh Windows install now.
