She's evacuated or in the Super Dome. There's no where else she can be. Evacuation was mandatory, so if she didn't leave on her own, the police saw to it that she did. She's safe.

Yeah, heard more about it on the news. How the oil refinery's last time are built to sustain a hurricane but took 6 months to continue working after the last hurricane. 20 something feet of waves..I think it was. It's crazy..190? The news I just watched said around 165... I don't know anyone in New Orleans..but still..

New update. It's now a Cat 4, 155 MPH winds, moving N at 12 MPH. It's 130 miles SSE of New Orleans, with 910 mb pressure. The western side of it is eroding, but it's still dangerous. New Orleans won't just be a cess pool, it's gonna be underwater. Weather Channel just showed a live feed, and you saw water coming up and receding. When it receded, you saw it was in a parking lot. Weather Channel is really your best bet for accurate, up to date info. TWC gets #1 priority for latest updates on things like this. |

It's a *strong* Cat 4 though and they're saying it could still go back up to Cat 5 come landfall. So that's no comfort at all.

Whoa! 155 mph! In the winter in Alaska, we get up to 100 mph on the hillside, and the whole house shakes! 55 more than that... Holy darn. Hopefully people's houses won't be damaged!

They won't be damaged. They'll be decimated. Current predictions are for the eye to make landfall around 7-8am Central. |

I'm thinking Led Zeppelin... This is not going to be pretty. All I heard a few days ago was it was barely a cat 1. (edited by Prier on 08-29-05 05:55 AM) |

And now it´s wirching between a Cat 4 and a Cat 5. Might get even more powerful than that. I´ll pray for New Orlean's citizens safety. There´ll be a lot of damage, though. Countdown to Doomsday...for New Orleans. |

Yech.. it's more than likely going to hit today. Cat 4 or cat 5 doesn't matter anymore.. just look at the thing. This is one destructive hurricane. I'm so glad I live on the west coast away from things like this. |

This is probably going to be the worst hurricane of 2005. Maybe worse than Andrew (from 1992) even.

From NOAA, the National WEather Service: "MOST OF THE AREA WILL BE UNINHABITABLE FOR WEEKS...PERHAPS LONGER. AT LEAST ONE HALF OF WELL CONSTRUCTED HOMES WILL HAVE ROOF AND WALL FKitten Yiffer. ALL GABLED ROOFS WILL FAIL...LEAVING THOSE HOMES SEVERELY DAMAGED OR DESTROYED. THE MAJORITY OF INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS WILL BECOME NON FUNCTIONAL. PARTIAL TO COMPLETE WALL AND ROOF FKitten Yiffer IS EXPECTED. ALL WOOD FRAMED LOW RISING APARTMENT BUILDINGS WILL BE DESTROYED. CONCRETE BLOCK LOW RISE APARTMENTS WILL SUSTAIN MAJOR DAMAGE...INCLUDING SOME WALL AND ROOF FKitten Yiffer. HIGH RISE OFFICE AND APARTMENT BUILDINGS WILL SWAY DANGEROUSLY...A FEW TO THE POINT OF TOTAL COLLAPSE. ALL WINDOWS WILL BLOW OUT. AIRBORNE DEBRIS WILL BE WIDESPREAD...AND MAY INCLUDE HEAVY ITEMS SUCH AS HOUSEHOLD APPLIANCES AND EVEN LIGHT VEHICLES. SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES AND LIGHT TRUCKS WILL BE MOVED. THE BLOWN DEBRIS WILL CREATE ADDITIONAL DESTRUCTION. PERSONS...PETS...AND LIVESTOCK EXPOSED TO THE WINDS WILL FACE CERTAIN DEATH IF STRUCK. POWER OUTAGES WILL LAST FOR WEEKS...AS MOST POWER POLES WILL BE DOWN AND TRANSFORMERS DESTROYED. WATER SHORTAGES WILL MAKE HUMAN SUFFERING INCREDIBLE BY MODERN STANDARDS. THE VAST MAJORITY OF NATIVE TREES WILL BE SNAPPED OR UPROOTED. ONLY THE HEARTIEST WILL REMAIN STANDING...BUT BE TOTALLY DEFOLIATED. FEW CROPS WILL REMAIN. LIVESTOCK LEFT EXPOSED TO THE WINDS WILL BE KILLED. Jesus, the Weather Service warnings sound like the Book of Revelations. They're straight-out saying that many types of buildings *will* be destroyed and using phrases like "human suffering incredible by modern standards" on a fucking weather service bulletin. |

The Super Dome is a football playing field in New Orleans for the Saints. It's totally enclosed in a roof (or it was before the hurricane) and there are about 20,000 people taking shelter in there. Right now in Biloxi, MS, the wind is getting up to 95mph so it's not looking good there either. The storm surge has also buried Highway 90 (right along the beach) in about 5 feet of water. The Weather Service needs to shut their Caps Lock key off. (edited by Brandon on 08-29-05 09:48 AM) |

Orginally, this storm was a tropical depression (#10, I think) and then it vanished. Then, out of nowhere, really, it came back as depression #12, right at Florida's doorstep. We had about a day, if that, to get ready, since it came up so fast. Next it went to a Cat 1 storm, said to hit right where I live. Then, at the last minutes, it took a dive and went to Miami. I guess our sheild works again, heh. Power went out everywhere on Thursday, my power came back on Sunday at 1am and many are still out of power. People cannot drive when the lights are out, so its a mess here in its own respect. A part of a highway fell over and a gas truck was at the edge of falling off of a ramp. And normally, once a hurricane hits land, it will weaken. The stayed a Cat 1 all through Florida. They even thought it would hit my dad on the West Coast of Fla, and it missed. They thought it would then go into the Gulf and then hit the Panhandle, they were wrong again (feels a little like Andrew, actually). And then with the waters so freaking warm, of course it would explode into this insane natural event. So, I start to get worried about all those people that I see on the TV, who haven't left yet (this was yesterday) and are the beach. Are you fucking nuts! Honestly, if you're doing dumb stuff like that, then you are hopeless. Also, I don't think this was mentioned, but Christi, a board vet lives in LA, but reading from her blog, she's in another state right now and safe. As for me, I keep getting flashbacks from Andrew, especially the aftermath, I fear for LA. I'm hearing reports that there are two holes in the SuperDome, both about six feet long. And the worst part of the storm isn't there yet. Honestly, I would be in Canada right nwo if I saw that storm coming for me! Lastly, give blood if you can. Help in someway, please. |

Just heard from CNN, a woman in Biloxi that was in a hotel just lost her finger from the wind slamming a door on it. The winds are starting to pick up there.

Oh, look who FINALLY pokes her head out of the ground. (Nice to see they screwed you over on power for a few days in this heat, dear. ) I... won't be giving blood. Blood, needles and I don't get along. I'll probably give to charity since I'm sure the school will be doing something when class begins next week... we raised a TON of tsunami money in January. |

Alright, good news: the French Quarter, I heard, is not having severe damage. It looks Katrina missed the city a bit to the east, which is sort of good. Despite partial roof fKitten Yiffer, it looks like the people in the Superdome are going to be alright and most of the people left the city. The bad news: several levees were breached and the water is pouring into parts of the city, particularly the eastern part. There seems to be quite a bit of wind damage too, so even though I don't think New Orleans turned into an Atlantis, it certainly turned into a Galveston (1900). EDIT: I forgot to mention. The water pumps that Danielle brought up earlier in the thread have stopped working. They'd probably be forced to send divers to fix the pumps. (edited by beneficii on 08-29-05 12:02 PM) |
