Does anyone think that this is sort of an official "hack"? I mean, it uses the SMB system but there's whole new levels. I know it's not really a hack, but it kinda is like one. Give your opinion.

It's actually the japanese version of SMB2. We got a hacked version of Doki Doki Panic as OUR Mario 2, that's why its so different.

look like the 2 version of mario bros. 2 is mainly based on another game. Nintendo was just too lazy to redo a different gameplay

Actually, if you'll take a look at SMAS, there's a VERY good reason.

Yeah, Nintendo's done that once or twice. Tetris Attack is another, being nothing more than a graphic/text hack (mostly just translation ) of Panel De Pon. Still pwns though.

Ya it is more or less a hack, in the sense that is isnt a whole new game engine but just new levels (all the levels are different and there are more of them) and some graphic changes (the famicon disk system changed some of the graphics from the original like those falling platform things.)
However our SMB2 is a hack too as some have pointed out. Either way it doesnt matter. Both were hacks, but our SMB2 introduced some key changes to the mario universe (like shyguys and stuff) so Im alright with us having our version.

Er... Watch the dates, teh1337g0d...

I don't see any harm in leaving it open, as he DOES touch a bit of a point...

I, personally, think that the original engine was maintained from SMB, with a few additions. It would've been pointless to recode it if all that would be changed were mostly the levels and graphics...

Yeah, Nintendo always tries to avoid re-making what's been made, sometimes to a rather ridiculous extent. Just about all their ports now are actually emulators with old games in them. I've heard even Super Mario Advance uses this.

You are right that too much of nintendo's GBA lineup is basically a port of their old game onto a newer system but I would not say that nintendo remakes all it's games to a ridiculous extent. It seems to me that with many of the original games that they release are not polished enough and are just a game concept with a character thrown onto the cover. I would really like it if nintendo did remake some of their newer titles to be longer and have better stories. If nintendo didn’t spend so much time inventing new types of games and would use a successful genre of game they have invented then they would make more money and make more gamers happy.

Erm... the game wasn't a hack. It basically used the same system as SMB but just added some extra features and new levels to ramp up the difficulty.

Some people think Miyamoto was either depressed or sadistic when making the game since some of the levels seemed "very un-Miyamoto like" according to a book I have.

No, I mean they'll go so far as to write a fully-functioning NES emulator for GBA just so they wouldn't have to port SMB2.

Being the same engine, same company but different levels doen't means that it's a hack. If it were like that, then megaman from 3 to 6 would be hacks because they used the same engine. That happens particulary with games released one year after another, and they use the same engine to save time

Well........I guess you have a point there EvilMushroom. SMB2j is almost the exact same as SMB except for new levels and some minor GFX changes. But there was a lot of new things introduced in the game also such as the green springboard, specific abilities for Luigi and the poisonous mushroom. So its hard to say. A hacker with good knowledge of ASM could change SMB into SMB2j.
