First off, I am not saying I am working on such a hack, just suggesting that someone should make one. I downloaded demos of super mario sunshine and luigis mansion that were done snes style and i think that somebody should do that but with metroid prime. lots of the super metroid hacks here are just fine, but i think it would be the most kick ass thing ever if we could play metroid prime in 2-d. Thats all i have to say about that. |

Indeed. I've personally assisted the programmer working on that. He's good. Very good. Better than anyone on this board even. And that's the truth |

A good game maker could do that, Fire. But most of the time nowadays, the professionals just buy a license for some tried-and-tested engine and heavily hack out their games from that. If I even try to count the games made with, say, the Quake engines (and I do mean games, not mods), I run out of fingers. There's a saying about that: don't reinvent the wheel. To which I dare to add: don't use the square block that is Gamemaker. |

Seeing as I've actually seen a few builds of this in action, I think I'm in a good position to say how good someone is at programming or not. And I stand by my initial statement |

I rest my case, and hope he'll rise above Gamemaker someday. Permanently. |

It takes a very good programmer to use Game Maker effectively. It also takes quite the oblivious programmer. By the time you bludgeon Game Maker into something completely useable, you'll have made so much code by hand that you might as well have used a proper language and started from scratch. Writing a platformer is not a very hard job. (I wrote one that randomly generates its own levels: no attacking my credentials.) It's mostly a matter of doing lots of testing to make sure things still work in strange cases (especially odd combinations of keys). And this project seriously needs an art director. Some of the art just doesn't look good together at all. |

Originally posted by Squash Monster Well, there's the fact that he isn't technically writing MP2D, he's writing a general-purpose platforming engine that's run completely by scripts and which employs various modules, including one of the most in-depth AI systems I've ever encountered. When that engine is complete it will be used by the MP2D team to create the game out if it, after which the guy will release the engine for public use. As someone who's currently working on an editable engine, that task is about 100x harder than just simply hardcoding the game engine. And I agree about the art. The programmer is god-tier, but I can't say the same about the people responsible for the art Let's hope that gets fixed soon. |
