Yep... I FINALLY got that new motherboard, along with some RAM, a video card, a CPU, a power supply, and a case to go with it. Put it all together, and after screwing around a LOT to get the existing Windows install to boot to burn a new install CD (the old one lacks SP2), everything seems to be running fine. There are of course some problems, but nothing really major for once.

New system's specs:

CPU: AMD Sempron 2800+, Socket 754 (runs at 1.6ghz, but OCed to 1.7 )
Motherboard: MSI K8T Neo-V with onboard sound/LAN
RAM: 256MB PC2700 333mhz x1
Video: 128MB Chaintech Volari V3 XGI
HDDs: 250GB 7200RPM Western Digital (from old computer), 20GB (not sure what brand or speed, but way slow, from old computer)
PSU: 400 watts (old one was 100... no wonder nothing worked! )

Not the best system ever but it certainly beats that crappy HP by a lot. And it has lights and a case window! (Have to take pics later; forgot to install a webcam.)

Now the problems I've seen so far are, in order of severity:
  • No sound! At first, Windows didn't detect any sound card. After installing drivers, it worked... but an hour or two later, the speakers just went looney playing some weird garbage, and I've not heard anything since. (Jiggled all the wires, no luck.) Odd things happen when sounds play; Winamp uses up 100% CPU power until I terminate it, even if I stop the music, and just closing it doesn't actually end the process. The previews under System Sounds don't really do anything, but the 'stop' icon doesn't turn back into a 'play' icon until I click it, as if the sound never stopped.
  • Several files are missing from the install CD, even though I used the SP2 package right from Microsoft. One of these files is cplexe.exe, and without it, I can't install the Japanese IME. (Nothing else seems to be having any problems, though.)
  • The video card has a TV-out function, which works quite well. I can see the same image on both my TV and my monitor. But if I try to extend the desktop onto the TV (wanna put a status screen on it ), the system just reboots as soon as I click OK!
  • Front USB ports, connected to one of the USB headers on the motherboard, don't work. The devices won't power up, and Windows says it doesn't recognize them. The back ports, which are built right into the board, work fine.
  • Windows keeps telling me that my firewall and auto-updates are turned off. Given that I turned them off, I think it's safe to say I know that. How do I make it STFU? (If I kill the process, it re-spawns. ) Thanks Kitten Yiffer, and yes, I do plan to get a firewall. Just not Windows'.
  • Onboard LAN also doesn't work. Windows doesn't even know it exists. The PCI LAN card I installed works alright, though.

It's nice, but I really gotta get sound working. I was looking forward to having a computer that could play N64 games with sound without having to play them at 320x244 in fullscreen in Safe Mode...

My speakers play some weird garbage too sometimes, I updated the drivers for the motherboard chipset and it went away...

Yeah, I did the same, sort of, and I think it works now. I updated the drivers, and then every time a sound played, it would just play silence forever... a problem because Windows won't do anything until the startup sound finishes. After rolling back the driver twice (nothing happened the first time; explorer just froze) in safe mode, it's playing sound again, but it was playing sound before too...

Pictures? Sure, I'll just... continue wondering WTF is wrong with the USB ports and why the camera is suddenly 'not connected' when I try to use it.

The joypad does, plugged in the back right next to where the camera was. (Could be that they won't both work at once, but that's not the case with the front where nothing else was plugged in at all.) I played F-Zero X with it and for once didn't see any problems. Might I say that game ROCKS. First time I ever played it without lag, missing textures, missing sound, or a crappy controller (N64 joysticks wear out fast ). But that's off topic.

768 MRam
GeForce 5200 128 Megs
Western Digital 80 Gigs
SoundMAX Integrated Soundcard (meh, as long as I have sound)
LG DVD-RW All formats and of course CD-RW
Ok... It's a Compaq, but I had no problem yet.

What's your soundcard ?

Got my burner for CHEAP so that shouldn't be a problem.

Dunno what my next upgrade will be... probably an extra hard drive when the prices go down again.

Congrats on not blowing the whole construction thingy.

Probably a dumb question, but have you checked the BIOS for any USB or LAN options? I think some new boards might ship with those disabled.

As for a DVD burner, I just split the cost of an external drive with my brother. It was only $99.99 at CompUSA, and has a 2-year warranty. The thing's kind of interesting, it's just an ordinary external drive enclosure with an IDE drive pre-installed, so we shouldn't have to replace the whole unit if the drive goes bad.

I'm guessing you guys don't have any CompUSAs up there, though, so that probably doesn't help...

I gopt my burner from a small business computer
shop, the price was excellent. Is it possible your PCI LAN card is messing with your onboard one?

Control panel>Admin tools>services

Then look for security center and turn it off. I have it turned on, as I don't mind having it around and I have a own firewall and anti-virus and I have the auto-update turned on. (thought I made it to prompt whenever it finished downloading, so I can choose whenever I want to install. )

And honestly, you should get a firewall. Just download Zonealarm and install it. It's not fun whenever there is a new security hole, that only causes a new worm to infect your computer...

And turn off "Automatic restart when computer have a fatal error". At least you will see what the error is. You find that in control panel>system and then you choose the advanced tab. Look for something along the lines of "start and restore". You should find the setting for turning automatic restart off whenever a error comes up.

After you done that, try to mess with tv-out again. Chanches are, it will show an error related to the graphic card drivers... (and I really do hope you're using the latest drivers )

So you have Realtek AC'97 too? And I already have a DVD burner.

What kind of Graphics card is "Chaintech Volari V3 XGI"? I´ve never heard of that.

Couldn´t you have bought a well-known graphics card? And you have almost the same Motherboard as me.

"PSU: 400 watts (old one was 100... no wonder nothing worked! )"

Lucky it didn´t catch fire. My cousin's PSU did that once.

Yeah, I forgot to disable auto-reboot, so I'll see what the error is later. I wanted a more well-known card, but I didn't have a lot to spend on one either. (Plus it's not like I really need something super-powerful... this runs N64 games, which is about the extent of what I'll be doing in 3D. ) The onboard LAN and USB are enabled; Legacy USB Support was off but that didn't change anything.

Argh... Does this happen to anyone else?

The old computer did the EXACT SAME THING.

[edit] Haha! Got the pics. I think the camera just has a driver problem (it's a cheap camera whose drivers really blow). I can take pics by clicking it in My Computer.

Front view. From top to bottom: Cool headlights/bug eyes, sound control device (those lighted fans back there blink to music ), thermometer, power button.

Side view. The case has a big frickin window. You can't really tell in this picture, but the plastic is designed to look like it's melting.

Side view again, with the fan lights dimmed a bit.

I'm pretty sure the rear USB ports do work. The joystick even works properly in ZSnes again! Yay!

the fans blink to music? Just out of interest, how does that work? My brother would be really interested in that, he keeps talking about casemodding his P4...

I just bought this little controller box. I had to cut off the plug and attatch a proper molex connector, though, since it's designed for some special kind of lighting system. Just chop off that little white thing, get a connector from an old power supply, and connect red to yellow and black to black. (I think either black will do; I used the one next to yellow.) It's supposedly a standard wiring system, so they should all be the same, but of course you'll want to test it with spare parts first. Unfortunately, it outputs 12V while most LEDs are 5V, so unless you add some resistors, your options are rather limited. (I wanted those blue lights at the top to blink, so the fans wouldn't stop - especially since they're so bright when I'm trying to sleep - but they're only 5V. But hell, this way I can shut the fans off. )

The case is very nice. The fans are positioned right over the AGP slot. It's even got covers for the CD/DVD drive bays, eight - count 'em - eight HDD bays (though 2 are supposed to be floppy drives), and a handle. Each side can also be removed individually. Only thing I can think of that would be useful is if the window was a door so I didn't have to unscrew it when I wanted to change stuff. (Also, I need a new floppy drive... the old one won't fit in the specially-molded FDD slot - it goes in where those wires are just above it - and the current one won't work. Hence why I keep reciepts. )

I'll try that IME but I don't suppose there's a way to get a list of files that are missing? I forgot to write them down during the install. The USB ports are always enabled, and the LAN drivers were installed from the disc. (Guess it might help to try newer ones, if they exist.)

Also, my first real PC casemod:

Hard to tell but the fan controller is now built right into one of the drive bay covers instead of taped on, and that red thing is a button that toggles those blue lights on the top. (Oughta see the complex circuitry huge lump of electrical tape I used. )
