ok im havin trouble finding this one game for the snes, its a sidescrolling space shooter where u can get powerups and stuff like speed up, missle shot, laser shot, and this bubble type weapon that u can charge up...another feature is u can pick ur weapon assist thing (they're little, round and orange) and u can change the formation of them too...this game is not any r-type's i think, does anyone have an idea of what the name of this game can be?

I'd think Gradius III as well but you can't charge weapons in that, can you? It's been a while since I played but as far as charging goes, you'd be looking at R-Type... and that's *IF* you're talking about a well-known shooter. SNES had tons of them.

Hint that I know it's Gradius III: "another feature is u can pick ur weapon assist thing (they're little, round and orange) and u can change the formation of them too..." ^-- That's Option. |

Yep, that's Gradius 3. It doesn't have any charging though. There's a freeware PC shooter out there which is literally a mix of Gradius and R-Type, search for G-Type or something...

Yeah, Gradius III. Man that game rules on all cylinders. (I think the Gradius series is way ahead of the R-Type series, then again, when I think of R-Type, I look at Super R-Type ... ) If you enjoy Gradius III, try out the you-will-suffer-and-cry arcade version. Graphics are smoother, but the game is way harder, but it's worth trying out. On a side note, I bought Gradius III for $5 over this past summer, let's see if you can find such an amazing deal also. |

Hey, I think that very game is the game I've been trying to find the name of for years! As a child, I remembered my cousins playing a game just like the one described, but I never learned the name of it. Cool!

I only know of 1 Salamander game, it was ported to NES but renamed to Life Force.

The entire Gradius/Nemesis/Salamander/Life Force/Vulcan Venture/whatever series is a horribly confusing mess of games with different names in different regions, sligthly changed variations, ports with different names, and so on. The Gradius Base has a fairly comprehensive list of the series, which is useful if you don't want to download 20 copies of the same game while looking for something you haven't played. |

Originally posted by Private Adamant Seems like it. So I take it the Salamander / Life Force series is actually still just part of the Gradius series? Another good sidescroller, the Thunder Force series, III and IV were incredible, but bitchin' hard. |

Hmm, Thunderforce III is for SNES, right? I think that Thunderforce IV is for SNES too but I´m not sure. *searches* No, wait, they´re for Sega Genesis. |

I think they renamed the SNES version to Thunder Spirits or something... Anyway, it was pretty terrible compared to the Sega version. The Thunder Force series has been on several consoles but TF4 is Sega-exclusive. Thunder Force IV is without a doubt the finest shooter available for any 16-bit system. Some more unique shooters I can recommend is Steel Empire, a steampunk-inspired shooter with zeppelins and sopwith camels, and Bio-Hazard Battle, which is some weird shooter with organic ships. Then there's Parodius which is... In a class of its own. |

Gecko is all-correct. I didn't even know they had different versions of Thunder Force for the SNES, but yeah, I've only played the Genesis versions. II was -really- weird and different, it was overhead and you go fly in any direction, rather than just going left to right like your regular shooter (which III and IV went back to). But yeah, IV is easily one of the best shooters I've ever played. On top of that, the music is absolutely oustanding, and seems way ahead of most Genesis games out there. Hard game though, but luckily my rom had a Infinite Lives option to start off with. _ Ah, Parodius, now those are good games, pretty hard too. The hardest part of those games? Trying to focus. |

Wasn't one of the TF games ported to the Genesis as Lightening Force (That's not a typo on my part; the game is actually called "Lightening Force")?

For reasons completely unknown it was renamed to Lightening Force in the US (The prequels were still Thunder Force), but kept its original name everywhere else. I have the game in original cartridge form so no cheating for me :p |
