GoogleTalk

It use the Jabber protocol. It would be nice if they let you sing in with your gmail account.

I've heard that Google has also released something else last night, wasn't it a blogger or something?

So, how is it? I've heard it's pretty good so far according to one of my friends, other than that ... Google has begun it's reign.

I haven't tried it since all my friends use the hotmail protocol, but yeah, I've also heard it's pretty good.

I'm comfortable with AIM right now but it's nice to see Google continue to expand on its path to world domination. Product looks pretty sleek at least, and it's not bloatware either.

Nah... I'm just fine with my current AIM account, my existing less-often used Jabber account, and my very rarely-used MSN account.

As long as it's compatible with official Jabber server software, google talk users can just get me via mikeonthecomputer@jabber.org

What in the hells? I thought this thread would be filled with high praise for it, as it's Google. But as I can see, everything is all fine and well. Now how come you guys weren't this sane and rational when gmail came out?

Anyway, aim for me and only aim. That's all I need.

Gmail was great... it's a free web email account that offers the most space of any of the rest.

GoogleTalk is just exploiting an exisiting protocol to become popular, adds further restrictions than most Jabber servers, and also inflicts more privacy concerns than most Jabber servers. (Going back to Gmail, that is not exploiting the existing email system, but instead benifits those who cannot or don't want to get an ISP email or pay-service)

eh, i like it, takes up next to nothing in resources and is just really barebones.

oh, and the ad-free thing is nice too.

I think gmail was/is overrated. Who really needs THAT much email space anyway? As for big files, you shouldn't be sending those to email accounts in the first place. Ah, and then there's the low maximum file size you could send out on attachments. Ugh.

I'm not even going to bring up the privacy issue. Actually...I wonder if gTalk will have the same deal with the FBI as it did for gmail. I doubt it, but who knows?

I'm fond of my gmail, but then I don't use it for anything confidential. I don't use all the space either, but the interface is very fast and clean and I'm happy with it.

I'm interested to see how thos GoogleTalk stuff plays out, there have been rumors for a LONG time about this. I have a Jabber account already too... interesting

When Gmail came out, I was using Yahoo Mail, which had just 'updated' to some fancy script that made it unusable in anything but IE. I needed Gmail. For chat, however, AIM via Trillian does the job for me. Now what Google needs is to be the first to release a non-sucky AIM client.

I haven't heard anything about this that makes it special or anything. Obviously I haven't tried it.. could someone tell me why it's a better alternative to AIM?

I haven't used the official Google Talk, I just use my normal Jabber thing. But here's why I think it's better:
1. It's not a proprietary protocol (eg, no reverse engineering to implement it)
2. The server is also not proprietary. If you want to make Jabber in your office, you can set it up like that. AOL has 'business' features, but it's all on the same old AIM server you're used to. With Jabber, you can actually make sure no external messages are coming to or going from your server... it decreases the chance of someone exploiting you from outside to.
3. Better blocking/allow feature than AIM, in my opinion. (eg, it doesn't bug up as often)

I have this and so far I can say it's very bland. The only thing I like is that you can create a message whether you're away or not. Otherwise it's pretty much boring.

I can have conversations while away in Trillian. Though it lacks an invisible mode, which the real AIM client has.

Well, for anybody who is interested, my Jabber S/N is tarale@jabber.org. That should work with this, right?
