Alright, so college is coming up yet again... I'm enrolled in five courses at the University of Rhode Island's Compsci/Mathematics program. This means I have a 16 credit course load, not too big a deal, right? It's better than 18, which is the max, but better than 15 too, which is the minimum for a full time student (which I am). Finanaces are taken care of: I got scholarships and interest free loans, meaning I technically owe the school NOTHING. Until I pay my loans, which amount to less than half of my total fees. And I have years to take care of that. Well, I've got my job at Toys R Us as well. Which I'd like to keep, if you don't mind. Scheduling is easy enough... I figure I work three days a week, rack up about 20 hours of work, and we're cool. Here's the problem: It's a 45 minute drive from my dorm at the university to Warwick, the town that the store is located in. I have no problem with this, I can deal. TRU is an awesome job and I have college coming up too, which is equally awesome. So I drive an hour and a half, two hours a day to work for that time each week. This STILL gives me ungodly amounts of time to study and play video games. My classes are all starting at AT LEAST 11 in the morning (save for fridays), which means I can theoretically get in at 1 AM or so and still get 8 hours of sleep while having ample time to eat and such. Considering the latest I usually leave my job (even in season) is about 11 at night, I'd have to say I'm in decent shape, especially when you consider that I won't be working on school nights (well, one school night). AND you can also count that I can't sleep for more than seven hours anyway, physically speaking. They all let out around the same time, 3:30 at the latest, save for thursday night, which lets out at 9:30 but starts at 12:30. Doesn't matter, I won't be working thursdays. Now personally, I think that 20 hours a week of work plus five classes spread sporadically throughout the week is easy shit compared to what I had to do during this school year (40 hours a week of classes as compared to about 25 from college) AND STILL work about 20 hours a week. And then there's the fact that I worked well over fifty hours a week throughout the summer. I'm no Iron Man, but I think I can handle this. My mom, however, does not. She's taking her "I told you so" tone with me because she thinks I will fuck up like my sister did. I will not fuck up. I can deal with so much more stress than anyone in my family gives me credit for, and I don't even SEE this as stressing... Maybe the arrogance of inexperience speaks within me, but I really think I can do this. I want this, I want some hardship in my life finally, and she's just putting me down, thinking I can't do it. Do you think I can? I need to know realistically. If so many people can handle psychotic course loads and still work their ass off to pay for college, can I take a middle-of-the-road (maximum course load is six, I have fucking FIVE for crying out loud, that's not much) course load and work a part time job? I don't see why not. I'm tired of not getting enough credit for being able to take shit. Come on, give me an answer here. |

I dunno, you made it sound easy, but I don't have your life I guess you could.

A part time job with college? I certainly think you could handle that. When you've got the whole afternoon off and can work til late at night, 4-6 hours of work won't hurt you. You'll still have study time in the morning or before/after work, and you'll have days off to do stuff that requires more time. If you manage your time well, this could be easy. Don't let your work force hours down your throat though. If you can keep it to 20 hours a week, I think the Grey one can manage this well enough to say I told you so to your mom.

I think you'll be fine. If you're working too much, you can always scale it back. The worst part sounds like the drive. 45 minutes from your dorm to campus? WTF?

It's 45 minutes from my dorm to work. The work commute would be the problem...

Ah. Well, if it's too much, you can always try to find a job on or close to campus.

Take Nicks advice, and get a closer job. 45 minutes is not worth driving if it isnt full time. If youre any more motivated then most people I know, you should EASILY be able to balance this. Sometimes it may kill your social life a little more than you want it too, but that is the price of life. Now, what exactly did your sister do to screw up? |

You can always cut back on the hours if it proves to be a problem. As for the commute. I'm SURE it doesn't take that long to get from URI to Warwick. Unless you're going a really weird-ass way. I may be mistaken though ; |

I agree with Nick also. To me, from how you describe it, it sounds manageable. If you think you can do it then I'm sure you can. Your sister must have done something way more to screw up or something You can do it! |

meh. When I was in college I preferred to work as little as possible. As my parent's contributions dwindled I was forced to work more to support myself. In response to that I just found jobs that paid more for less work . You make five classes sound trivial. That depends on the classes you're taking. If they're really work intensive classes don't be surprised if you get your ass kicked. Even one or two very involved classes can eat up your time more than you'd think. Just to conserve time, find a job on campus. Campus jobs usually pay more than an equivalent job off campus (McDonalds, bookstores, campus coffee shop, etc.) |

MON, I'm pretty sure I've balanced my workload reasonably well... I'm getting all of my requireds out of the way: Writing requirement, a math class I took two years ago, and the freshman orientation class, which I don't even have a BOOK for. The two classes I'm really worried about are the two programming courses I've signed up for. I only hope I'll be able to handle it. But hey, you gotta put your foot in the door to walk through it. |

You've already covered your grounds and proved to be time efficient. You wanna take my 2 cents of wisdom? Don't... Listen... To... Your... Mom... Or at least listen to her when she has a reasonable point. |

Well, whether you can handle it or not is no longer the point. Now it has become a matter of pride, and a challange from your mother to you. Now hear me out. When a person gets to college age and is still with mom and dad, they begin to get a little, well, shall we say, Freudishly assurtive. I mean that somehow many parents (not necessarilly yours) often begin to feel threatened when they have another adult in the house, primarily one that is showing a sign of real independence. Show them that you can percivere, don't let them see you sweat. And as a person with older siblings, let me tell you to never let your parents off for comparing you to another child. It is an encredibly stupid thing to do. But in the end your mom's just worried about you, even if there is a few subconscious things she's throwing at you without realizing it. Just be patient with her and take into conscideration that she's probably in the grip of the beginning pangs of a sort of "empty nest" syndrome. just my two cents. |

You both present very solid points, the trouble is I'm never really sure which of them is correct. I was waiting for this, actually... See, I hold the view that I both need to listen to my parents (since my sister didn't and she's barely managing now), AND that my mom is being a nag and doesn't know what she's talking about, because I know my limitations better than she does. It's tough to figure out which view you need to hold.

Yeah, Im sure you did learn from your sisters mistakes. You know what you're capable of so just go for it. Take both your mom's advice and prove her wrong. Take what happened with your sister and do opposite. Use what they told your sister and take it upon yourself. DO what your sister didn't do. Take the time to listen to your parents. Don't take it as her being a nag. She's just trying to make sure that you don't do the same thing your sister did. |
