I believe all the Harry Potter books are becoming extremely boring and overrated. Hardly anyone cares anymore because the books take so long to write. I for one am sick of waiting for each book so I just don't bother anymore. War books are quite good, they give a lot of educational stuff about what war really is about, making people more aware of what they are signing up for when they sign up for war. But on the topic of Gaiman, he's steadily becoming my favorite author. I own the first seven books of the Sandman series, as well as Neverwhere and Stardust (the latter of which I've yet to read). It's all really great so far. If you're an avid fiction reader with little experience with comic books, the world of graphic novels would be a great place to start. The Sandman in particular. Everything Gaiman writes is different, and yet it all still remains distinctly his work. One novel of his that I've read, I'm sure anyone who appreciates fiction can probably appreciate; American Gods stands as my favorite of his novels so far. Listen to your friend, drjayphd. |

I enjoy reading HP, and it's odd that I do so. I'm an adventure / historical fiction person, with very little sci-fi. |

Long and Boring? Hmm... I suppose the only think that irks me about the HP series is that JK Rowling assumes ALL TEENAGE BOYS SHOUT ALL THE TIME, OKAY!? IT'S LIKE WE CAN'T CONTROL THE SOUND OF OUR VOICE!!! Also, I don't see the big deal about a certain death scene in Book 5, in fact one in Book 4 affected me more and shocked me more. That said, I'm so hooked on the arc plot I'm not atticted to the series, Slag it off if you like but shrely you want to see if Harry kicks Voldemort's arse come book 7... |

In 5 it hit home more, but in 4 it was a shock because we hadn't experienced any real loss yet. Now we'd best be ready for anything |

The scene in Book 5 though was a bit of a copout eh... Spoiler: No body, so he could actually come back at any time, which lessens it for me, I think Sirius should have left a body for Harry to grieve over instead of falling through a veil... (edited by Uncle Elmo on 04-28-04 02:58 PM) |

You know, it might not seem like it, but he's right! Creepy, isn't it? Umm, yeah, well, judging by your age, you go check out a few of the old classics from the shelves like The Great Gatsby or Catch 22. If you're interested in something along the mystical lines of Harry Potter, you might want to check out the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer. Of course, you might just want to go by the type of genre you like to read. If so, go to your local library or bookstore, and get yourself a copy of something you've never seen before (yet still appeals to you.) It just might work . . . unless you're like any other typical teenager who doesn't read jack squat. |

Oof....Catch 22....I dunno. I did not like that very much. I am an avid reader, and I could not even get past page 40 of it. |

Haha.. Atlas Shrugged. That was my last major read, as well. Good stuff, as long as you don't get too absorbed by it. | |||

Catch 22 remains one of my favourite books of all time. But i know plenty of people that simply don't like it as its all over the place. As for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas....thats a great book. I seem to remember reading it in about a day and thought it was the funniest things I'd ever read. its also one of the few things where the film adaptation of it has actually done it justice. I'm actually about to start Hunter. S. Thompsons latest book when I next get a free moment, King of Fears but I have to read The Bluest Eye first. Another good book is American Psycho. Much better than the film in my opinion but really uncomfortable to read. I was told before hand that the violence would get to me but i was certain I could handle it. However the people were right and American Psycho remains the only book that has ever made me feel actual nausia. |

hah...I've read it twice. I found it quite easy to get through but then it is a love or loath kind of book. Some people don't mind that it is has this completely garbled plot with the time shooting back and forth every chapter and others simply hate it and find it too confusing. The point really is that its kind of meant to be confusing to a certain extent. |

OK. And a "catch 22" means it's impossible to do right? How does that tie into the book? Use spoilers if it's that bad. |

I'll try and explain it without too many spoilers but its late so it may not come off very well... The basic storyline follows Yossarian who is stuck in the situation of warfare and wishes to escape. This is partly why the book can be confusing to read as the setting is presented in such a bizarre way e.g. you have loads of bizarre and surreal events and characters combined with a plot which is all over the place in terms of actual time. This basically is to just show the madness of war in general I suppose. Anyway, the notion of Catch-22 ties into this in that all Yossarian's attempts to escape conflict are blocked by absurd rules. Technically there are ways to get out of the war but in each case...there is a catch which means it isn't actually realistically possible. The best example I can think of is when Yossarian asks the Doctor if there is anyway in which the Doctor can ground him and stop him from flying. The Doctor says he can if Yossarian is crazy. Yossarian says he is crazy and the doctor agrees with him. the Doctor explains that anyone who continues to fly suicidal bombing missions must be crazy but the Doctor doesn't ground these people as he isn't allowed to ground anyone without them asking him to. So Yossarian immediately asks to be grounded as he's crazy. The Doctor then tells him that he can't ground him because now that he has asked to be grounded, he shows a clear desire to no longer fly suicidal missions and thus can't be crazy. The whole book is full of other catch-22 like this which are basically used to give out the old war is mad thang |
