The only catch is that the DS uses a different processor.

The Micro only plays GBA games because it only has the one processor used by GBA games.

The only reason the GBA played GBC games was because it had two processors: the one used by GBA games, and the one used by the older gbc games.

The DS only contains two processors: the one DS games use, and the one GBA games use.

An add-on like you suggest would have to either be very expensive because it contains a new processor, or be a piece of hardware that contains an emulator. They wouldn't do the latter, as it would make pirted games too easy to play.

There needn't be any special hardware, save for a simple circuit to step up the voltage, which most likely just means running 5 volts through the GBC cart and not using the DS's voltage at all. Put an emulator on a DS card, and there you go. DS itself does the emulation. Since the emulator would be connected to a real GBC cart, it needn't be able to load ROMs, emulate memory controllers/SRAM, etc; thus making piracy essentially impossible (save for a GBC flash cart).

Also, DS isn't GBA-compatible because it contains the GBA's processor. DS uses the GBA's processor in addition to the ARM9. Really, DS is GBA with some stuff added to it; shut down the second CPU and other add-ons and it's identical to a GBA.

Ziff: Never said Nintendo will sell more than 10 million of them. I'm just saying it won't go collecting dust on the storeshelves. They'll make something off it even if it's not much.

Geez, to think I bought a DS on day one just to find out it was terrible.

Bad start but the game lineup's starting to build steam pretty quickly. This week sees both Nintendogs and Advance Wars Dual Strike released, both of which have been getting top marks.

What? This is so stupid. Why the flargh doesn't it play old GBC and GB games? What is Nintendo trying to do here? I was planning on buying one, too, if they were under $100, but... Well this sucks. I might still have to buy it!

I see no reason to buy this if it only plays GBA games. I have two handhelds that plays GBA games already.

Yeah, I´d like to be able to play GB and GBC games on it too.

I heard some kind of rumor that the GB Micro would be the same price as the DS when it first came out. Is that true?

Look at it this way. If it played gbc games, the cartridge would look so STUPID out the top! It would be almost 2/3 bigger than the system itself, I bet it even. The z780 also could not fit inside of it, I bet. The GBC soundchip is the only surviving hardware =\ I do not think it is a big deal. I think this was made as a trendy way to play Gameboy ADVANCE games. Since you know it is a Gameboy ADVANCE after all. Not a Gameboy Color ._.; Most people by now should have a GBA or a GBC anyway so they have no reason to complain..GBC games in pocket would take up more space which destroys the whole point of the micro, anyway! And that is how I see things ._.;;

This thing is supposed to be like a GBA Lite. The smallest, cheapest possible GBA. If they added GBC compatibility, it wouldn't exactly be Lite anymore now would it?

I disagree. When the first GameBoy Advance came out, one of the main features was backwards-compadability. They held true to that with the second GBA, the GameBoy Advance SP. The DS partially broke that rule, but the 3-D rendered games made up for that.

Now this 'Micro' is breakin' all the rules, yo'. Nintendo is really starting to make me angry. Sony, here I come!

Nevermind, I found an article about the GB Micro.

The colors for the GB Micro aren't that bad but I'm not getting one anyway.

Oh no! I don't like a new version of a system even though I'm not required to buy it to play the games it runs! I must now go buy Sony products out of spite!

Seriously, shut up. Buy what you like, don't buy what you dislike. Wow, difficult concept, huh? People like you really bug me. What the hell is with system loyalty? I own Nintendo systems because I like the games. If you're going to buy Sony products because you don't like the newest version of a Nintendo system you probably already own, then I really don't know what the hell is wrong with you; at the very least, you probably shouldn't be playing games.

Um. Snika, her exact point was this one was specificly design as a GBA ONLY. Peopl by this point should already own a GBA or GBC and it was made just as a more convenient way to play GBA games, having GBC game with it would defeat that purpose. That's basicly what she said. Not a difficult concept to grasp here, buddy.

edit: and the ds? COMPLETLY DIFFERENT SYSTEM. What with Nintendo outright SAYING IT and all. You should be greatful they even put in GBA stuff. Next you'll complain that your SNES dosnt play NES games even though they both have the word -NES in it so why the hell not? ONOES PSX TIEM PLZ!!1`1

Because there's still a bit more room to pile on:

When the first GameBoy Advance came out, one of the main features was backwards-compadability. They held true to that with the second GBA, the GameBoy Advance SP.

Backwards compatibility was a big selling point then. Now? Not so much. Besides, the SP was sooner and, oh, guess what, fixing OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE GBA. As was stated earlier, the Micro is for people who wouldn't be seen with a GBA or SP. Thus, the design. It's just hitting another market. If you want to get a GBA and want backwards compatibility, you could just get an SP... for $30 LESS.

Totally different system although Nintendo could run with it for a while if certain titles do well. It certainly doesn't look like a Virtual Boy-type disaster anyways.

Yes, because GBA was the new system. Nothing else. Now, you have a choice. If you still like GBC games, buy an SP. If you only care about GBA games and want something small, buy Micro. See how that works? Making GBA without backward-compatibility would have sucked, because you would be forced to carry both it and a GBC. Making GBA with backward-compatibility, and then GBA Micro without, gives you the choice of spending a bit more on a bigger system that plays GBC games, or saving some cash and getting the smaller, GBA-only version. Just like how if you were a lucky Japanese person a few years back, you had the option of buying a cheap standard Gamecube, or a more expensive one that plays DVDs. (Why can't I have a Q? )

I think nintendo has made a big mistake on the gba micro. I've got a nintendo ds so why would I want to buy a micro. Also most people would rather just spend some extra money so they can play DS games as well as gba. And the final thing is that by the time it comes out most developers would have stopped developing for the gba and started developing for the nintendo ds.

You're wrong.

So far, I believe that GBA is worth alot more money to the developpers.

This and the fucking main point of the GBM (it has been mentionned two fucking thousand times) is so it doesn't take too much space in your pocket. Read the fucking thread before replying, since you obviously missed the point of the GBM.

Because the DS is huge (I'm someone who bought it when it came out, and always have it with me, so I know what I'm talking about.)

Plus, Micro is cheaper. Maybe you can't or don't want to spend that extra money on a DS. Some people just want a decent game system and don't care what it's like as long as it's fun.

It's not a mistake because they'll make back their initial investment on it worldwide. Whether it makes them any significant profit or not remains to be seen.

Now, if they package the system with a game...
