| I have a simple problem, though for the life of me I can't come up with a fix. For Christmas last year, I received a new 80GB hard drive to replace my old 60ish one as the main drive. Currently, the 80 is the C: drive while the 60 is the D: drive. Of course, all of my old games, files, and other stuff remained on the D: drive, so I began the task of transferring the necessary things. My personal files moved without a hitch, but I found that games and the like could be used more efficiently if I simply reinstalled them onto the C: drive (as opposed to copy/pasting directly from the D: drive - I wasn't even sure if that was a viable method). Not only would that give me a clean install, but it would assure that I have all the necessary files. My strategy has worked fine until recently. I had an urge to get back into The Sims. Much to my chagrin, the original Sims CD (which I had let a friend borrow) was scratched severely. It wasn't recognized by my computer. In good conscience (because I already legally own the game), I tried to download the original version. It installed perfectly, but a new problem came up: the computer did not recognize its existence, at least for the purposes of installing the expansion packs. When I scrapped the idea of using a downloaded version, I copied and pasted the entire Sims directory to the C: drive. It gave me problems when actually trying to run the game, and so I surmise that the actual installation process has some role in making it run smoothly (though, what do I know?). Tell me, what can I do to make this work? For reference, I have the CDs from all the expansions that I want to use (that is, none of them are scratched or anything) and I still have the full installation on my D: drive. It just doesn't seem to work. |

| I don't think there's much you can do here, try cleaning the original CD or get a new one. Installing expansion packs on downloaded games usually doesn't work, and neither does copying. | |||

| Oh yes I rembember that back then. I did loan out my orginal game to somebody who bought the expansion. The pirated version don't work with the expansions.  You could try to find a ISO file and burn it, or loan somebody The sims copy.  That game is the most sold one ever, so somebody oughta have it. |

| Eh, silly me - a bit of soap and warm water was enough to be rid of the nasty fingerprints that seemed to be causing the problem, and I've gotten the CD to work despite a fairly massive scratch that remains. Thanks for your time, guys  . |

| The problem aries from the fact that The Sims is looking for data in the registry that isn't there. It's in the registry on your D: drive. I did something like that for this machine I'm on now, and had the same trouble. Do you have a lot of room left on your D: drive? If so, I suggest you make a partition on it, and move save game data and the like there. Then, reformat the D: drive. All your backups should be on E:, since that will be the letter of the partition. As for the scratch on your Sims CD, I have 2 suggestions for you: 1) The Toothpaste Mehtod Get a pasty, white toothpaste and a very, VERY soft cloth. When I did this, I used one of the baby blankets the hospital gave us when my daughter was born. Put a little of the toothpaste on the CD where the scratch is, and use the cloth to buff it in. This can be a very tedious thing to do, depending on the scratch. But it will work. I have a CD my daughter scratched so bad I could hold it up and look through it. When I did this, it worked fine. 2) CD Cleaner Method Get yourself a CD cleaner. Like the GameDoctor. Most places like EB Games or Software Etc. will sell these, and Wal*Mart might even have some.
