I started my NES emulator and realized that my FF3j save file was gone, I got into the Cave of Darkness and was really fond about that game and playing further.

I thought, maybe it just changed the directory and the emulator assumed there is no save file directory set. Then I opened up the config and noticed there was no entry for any directory; it seemed to be the default setting since I never put a path into that anyay.

I just cannot believe that file is gone - that machine didn't crash, I never had any problem and I so some more serious with that computer -> I do earn money and also work with that machine, do my backups ... but I never backed up that tiny NES save file, oh well, hence my dumbness (I backup a lot of stuff usually ...)

Which file ending to FCEU save file have and where I could search for that ?
Does FCEU immediately overwrites these files on exit ?
If yes, it is lost - since I started FF3j and exited it (didn't save then), after I realized the file is gone.
I don't mean save states but files - battery-packed files like Kirby's Adventure, Wario's Woofd and such.

Thanks in advance,

Surlent

The version is FCE Ultra 0.98.12 and it doesn't appear to have these hotkeys.
I also found a file called Final Fantasy 3.sav, but it is weird to have a save file when there is no actual save on it

if the game is failing to save then you might have to use save state.
Just be like me and save the same in the appropriate times.
It will save in load times.

The save file must have the same name as the rom, minus the extension. When you play a battery-backup enabled game, the sav file is stored with the following name:
"rom file name"."some weird code".sav

Changin or deleting the code from the file name doesn't do anything and the rom still loads the saved info OK. And opening the rom and closing it inmediately doens't di anything to the saved info also.

The sav files for FCEU (in my case) are stored in the directory "sav" of the fceu directory. Try putting the sav file in this folder (create it if necessary) with the "same name of the rom".sav

If all else fails, do a simple search for the name of your ROM without the .nes part. I've had to do this for a while now, since ZSNES's directories have been acting up all of a sudden

Open DOS, type 'cd\', then type 'dir /s filename'. Finds any file named 'filename', fastest search you'll ever see. If you don't find it just type another drive letter (eg 'f:') and try again. In filename you can use * to match anything (eg 'h*m' matches 'ham', 'hum' and 'hoot, hoot, WHAM') and ? to match one letter (eg 'h?m' matches 'ham' and 'hum' but not 'helm').
