My MIDI sounds horrible. Some of my friends said to get the Yamaha SoftSynthesizer. I downloaded it, installed it, but it doesn't work. Running the preinstalled player and selecting the SoftSynth gives me a "Undefined Error". Using Windows Media Player with SoftSynth selected in the Sound control panel, I get no sound from the MIDI at all. I'm not sure what's wrong with it. The help files say to check all connections if there's no sound. Well, I did, and MIDI still works with the built in XP MIDI (which I hate)... and I've Googled for around an hour with no results. If anyone knows how to fix this, or knows of a better software synthesizer that actually WORKS, let me know. I'm running Windows XP Media Center 2005, 1 GB RAM, Athlon 64 3500+ 2.2 Ghz, with some onboard Realtek sound card. |

There is no "good" software synthesizer/wavetable, due to the different architecture of sound cards. The standard "Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth"(esizer) is crap, indeed. A huge latency of about one second I think and no additional effects for improving the sounds. Nothing against MIDIs, but some tracks simply sound better wen they got pepped up by software. And the more expensive the card, the better the included software synthesizer for that - and it's also just designed for that sound card and will work. You cannot make a Creative software wavetable (file ending: .ecw) working for another sound card or even onboard chip. Even if, you more likely might screw up the drivers, so that you need to uninstall these drivers anyway. But onboard sound suck anyway in these terms, I have an onboard sound chip as well and know that. The in-built MIDI synthesizer in RPG Maker XP is simply awesome, it makes an incredible jump (in comparison from General MIDI -> RMXP's MIDIs) - but just downloading a program in another purpose than just a MIDI player is useless, yes. I tried WinGroove on my second computer, a Win98 machine, and it was no good improvement. If you really want to have good MIDI playback, there will be only the option to buy a better sound card, as they provide the hardware and proper fitting software synthesizers to make MIDIs just ear-worms. Then there are only the mentioned compromises with these mentioned "universal" synthesizers like WinGroove (which suck, see above). |
