I'm a pescetarian - one who eats seafood but no mammals or fowl. This is how I was raised, and it makes a great deal of sense to me.Originally posted by Yoshi DudeThere are various reasons that one may choose to eat (or not eat) fish, but on the subject of their capacity for suffering, I agree with the rationale presented in this article - namely, fish have reptilian brains without a functioning cerebral cortex. Though they can perceive discomfort on some level (which is why they try to pull off a hook when they get stuck), they lack the higher brainpower necessary to have even the slightest remnant of self-interest or ability to suffer. This is why I couldn't care less about eating them. I am bothered by the idea of eating something that once had a cerebral cortex, and my "no meat or poultry" diet is perfectly healthy (I don't even have enough trouble getting enough protein for bodybuilding), so I doubt I'd ever start eating, say, steak unless I had some sort of major deficiency that could be best corrected by meat. For instance, heme iron (iron from meat) is much more easily absorbed by the body than non-heme iron, so people with severe anemia really need to eat red meat for optimum health. Given a choice, though, I'll stick to getting my protein from cottage cheese, eggs, soy, beans, and the occasional salmon steak. For the record, I couldn't care less what other people eat, and I certainly would not withhold meat from an obligate carnivorous animal I was taking care of. (Morons who try to force their cats into vegetarianism chafe my ass. Cats need taurine, which is only really effective when it comes from meat. Chester and Cookie eat very high quality food containing a variety of named meats.) It's just that the idea of eating meat personally squicks me out. |
