I was thinking about a way on how to make new members read the FAQ. I thought that after you register, you can't post yet until you read the FAQ. When you read the FAQ to qualify for making your first post, you have to read ot question by question. After reading the FAQ like this, you take a (pretty easy) test about the behavior, spam, and "I've been banned" questions of the FAQ. If you pass the test (which is getting everything right), you can post. Otherwise, you have to read it again and take the test again. What do you think about this? Perhaps this might lower the amount of bans, spam, or flames.

That'll probably not work because newbies will just keep on guessing and will not learn anything from the test and they end up spamming and getting ban.

When you register, you are automatically redirected to the FAQ. It's enough.
You can take a test about the rules, but that doesn't mean you understand them. I mean what are you doing, copying and pasting text? Or would you have to word it in a specific way? How would you know the right way to answer? Would an admin have to approve of your being registered?
There isn't an epidemic of newbies not reading the FAQ either. It seems like a waste of time.

Plus a lot of time, especially with flaming, people who get in trouble don't think, "Wow, I had no idea this sort of thing was frowned upon! I should have read the FAQ."

fabio = A+

Basically wont work because you get morons that go... "Hmph! WTF?" So they will just go nuts on the test. Nothing more we can do.

Good points. I guess it does take up a lot of time. It may not work very well. It might work for very few people then. I guess it could also be annoying, too. I was thinking this might be too complex, anyway. Now this makes me wonder if it's even possible for new features that could to reduce bans, spam, flames, or stuff like that.

Multiple choice.

Eh, even with a test it wouldn't make that much of a difference. I know the faq inside and out and even I break the rules from time to time.

What we need is some kind of mind control device or some form of hypnosis.

I really don't think forcing them to read the FAQ will make them follow it.

Unfortunately, this board would probably be gone by the time these devices are invented.

Yeah, I guess so. It might drive people crazy. I guess we should just hope for more "good" newbies (as in those who follow the rules) or hope that the mind control device can be invented soon.

Yeah, a redirect seems like enough. Tests are just annoying to put up with.

Myself, I looked at the board for awhile before I registered. It just makes more sense to know what your getting into than to just read guidelines that have no real examples.

Maybe you should add situations that happend in the past to the FAQ, so people can see what kind of board it is. Like showing how someone was banned for acting a certain way.

Theres millions of lame boards on the net, some people dont know one from the other.

Here's what I think. They don't have to read the faq, but it is recemended to read the faq. Maybe you should test them on the faqs.

Yeah, the FAQ says that you should read it (and everyone else does too). Clearly, that's not working. If it were, this discussion wouldn't be happening...

If they was taking a test, they would hit < BACK, look at the answers, FORWARD >. Their is simply no control over newbies....And besides, without newbies, there would be no need for mods!

I think the FAQ's layout is bad.

What I'm saying is, the obligations and the rights are in the same place.

If you separate the "What's spam" and "What's EXP" and stuff,(categorize?) then the n00bs would know there are only a few rules to follow.

The only things we need are the word "Rules", "Functions", and a HR tag to do this one.

I've seen the test thing before, at Pixelation.

You answered a test, it was multiple choice. You could guess your way through the answers without having read the FAQ, provided you had common sense.

It was no guarantee however that you'd excecute said common sense once you were permitted to post on the forums.

It wasn't a given, but at least the noobs had to actually read the rules in order to avoid spending who-knows-how-long in the test. That, and make the pass reward a second verification code for the board.

Or, just live with threads like this that pop up every so often: Example
