Okay, I think we all get the picture: there's a highly-marketed video game on the market... that gets SO highly marketed and hyped up that it becomes a Million Seller and popular. And how do they keep the trend going? Simple... the developers of the games start handing out rights to film directors to create on-screen adaptions of these games. Why? Simply because the games get popular (like GTA), and it's a way to make MORE money. Unfortunately, most game-based movies fail because they either don't stay true to the original premise of the game, or they fail to capture the action and depth that makes the games interesting. Or sometimes it's a case of both. Take Uwe Boll's "House of the Dead" and "Alone in the Dark" for example. The way these movies were shot, they made it seem like they were half-assed prequels to the game (which they were, but very-poorly produced prequels at that) and have nothing to do with the first game at all, but for the most part, it's just the fact that they just don't translate well on-screen as they do in a video game, and that's the downfall in 99% of game-based movies, and judging by the track record, I doubt we'll see a change to that anytime soon (Doom DOES look promising, though... but then again, so did Resident Evil 1 and 2)

Wing Commander-Sucked
Street Fighter-Sucked
Tomb Raider-Kind of Sucked
Super Mario Brothers-REALLY SUCKED!
Double Dragon-HORRID!
Resident Evil 1 and 2-Okay at best
Mortal Kombat: Annihilation-Sucked
Alone in the Dark-Awful
House of the Dead-REALLY AWFUL; as in worst-piece-of-crap-film-ever-made "really awful". Just watch it and you will see what I mean (if you haven't already seen it; if you haven't, then I congratulate you for not having to sit through the pain and agony as I did while watching it).

And now we have numerous game-based movies coming out in the near future:

BloodRayne (looks like it'll be coming straight-to-video, though since apparently, Lions Gates dropped the rights to this film)*
Dead or Alive
House of the Dead 2: Dead Aim (same shit, different director)
Tekken
Grand Theft Auto
Halo
Splinter Cell
Metal Gear Solid
Far Cry*
Fear Effect*
Dungeon Seige*
Doom
Duke Nukem... from what I hear, or HEARD rather, though that was quite a long time ago. Wonder if they're still working at it or not.

*=Directed by Uwe Boll (well, whadd'ya know? MORE evidence that they're doomed to suck out loud by the time they hit theaters for a nationwide audience)

And I'm sure there's plenty more to come around, too, and they're all more or less doomed for the same reward: utter crapdome. Just when will directors learn that games DO NOT MAKE FOR GOOD MOVIES?!!! Simple: they won't. Game-based movies are a trend that will never die out simply because there's kids who play the games who tend to leave directors with the impression that games are actually a good compensator for action films.

As long as the video game industry thrives, then these games will never stopped being leeched for every dollar they can possibly provide over any medium.

That being said, I thought the Resident Evil movies weren't half bad at all. I also think that Splinter Cell and Doom might turn out to be pretty decent as well and god willing, MGS too.

So...what good video game movies exist?

I hear Dungeons & Dragons was pretty awful, too. Not really a video game, but close enough. FF: The Spirits Within was probably the best video game movie I've seen, with Mortal Kombat a distant second.

My theory is that trying to take two different markets and putting them together doesn't work.

For example, there is a strong market for comic books. There is also a strong market for yo-yos, too! Mr. Business Executive has a great idea to combine the two markets (using basic math: 1+1=2) to make something double the power. OOPS! Comic books and yo-yos don't mix that well. So, 1+1= Something Illogical.

Same thing with movies and video games. Doesn't work out that well. They should stop trying, because in the process they make the original movie/game look terribly bad. We know that they won't stop though...

Of course they won't stop, they'll keep on trying until they find a hit and milk everything the can out of it.

I liked the Tomb Raider and Resident Evil movies..I never played the Resident Evil game though..it scared me when I was young . The 1st movie was decent enough for me to want to see the 2nd.

They should be learning what they can do to make a game based movie, which Im sure is what they're doing.

I noticed that the original Mortal Kombat movie isn't on that list. Why? Because it was the first seriously told the movie industry that some game based can actually work, and more or less opened the floodgates.

That said: Here's my own list of critiques...

Super Mario Bros.: So bad, it's pretty funny. Has a few good points.
Tomb Raider: These ones were pretty good, both of the them.
Resident Evil: First movie good, second a little dissapointing, but passable.
Mortal Kombat: Annihilation: Okay, this one did suck.
Street Fighter: Mostly sucked. End fight scene wasn't bad.
FF: TSW: Dissapointing. They plain and simply dropped the ball here.
Any Uwe Boll Movie: BAD.

The Doom movie more or less hinges on The Rock's performance. I've found that a good cast can break through a bad director or mediocre script. With that in mind, I really hope Bloodrayne will break Uwe Boll's losing streak...

The first Mortal Kombat was a freaking hit. The second one seemed slapped together... almost like the director was playing AD&D... *Rolls the dice* "Ah! Johnny cage is killed by a 25 hit dice rock and dies instantly!" "Ooo! Nightwolf made Liu Kang level up to 999! He now has the power to Shapeshift into a dragon at will! Nya!"

If they ever make a Castlevania movie, they'd better make it good or I will go to the studio peronally, with a bunch of guns...
I could imagine Richter going to the Inverted Dungeon to kill Dracula as usual. His whip come down and the Vampire Killer music plays full blast.

Another one I'd like to see on big screen is Starcraft. Take the intro from Broodwar as a part of it. That would be sweet.

Silent Hill is going to be the greatest game-based movie ever, and it's going to kick lots of ass...so I hope. It sounds promising... Christophe freaking Gans, he can't let me down.

I hope so, too... but I doubt it will. Cast and acting isn't everything, you must understand. Cast and acting can only do so much for a film, and judging from the previews, I don't think it has much else to show for it besides that, so yeah, expect another Uwe Boll flopfest.

Yeah, Mortal Kombat wasn't only a decent film, but it made a TON of money and would have to be on any "Top 5 game-based movies" list. Tomb Raider did really well at the box office but the second one didn't do well at all if I recall.

Final Fantasy was a HUGE money pit for Square at the time, and they really could have put together a better story. Not that it was a *bad* movie or anything... it just wasn't what fans expected and that dragged it down.

You forgot "God of War" in that list of games turned movies.

And microsoft wants a shit load for the Halo movie to be green light.

I won't go into a rant, but I will say this; video game turned movies kick ass when you're a kid. Cause you don't really care about the acting, as long as there is action.

Movies like Street Fighter, Double Dragon, Mario Bros., I saw when I was a kid, and I liked 'em. I watched Street Fighter a few months ago and I laughed my ass off. Good times though, good times.

I've been wanting to see Super Mario Bros. and Street Fighter lately. Haven't seen those movies in ages. They were pretty atrocious, but fun in a way, in a really crappy way. I'm sure I'd enjoy watching them a lot. Mmmm... Kylie Minogue as Cammy.

I'd like to see more animated features done. And not this shitty digital BS that is going around. REAL cel by cel animation done on the old analogue systems so that it will have that amazing feel that Disney movies from the 80s and earlier have.

Legend of Zelda's already being made, and rest assured, it's gonna suck just like (just about all of) the rest of them. How can they POSSIBLY fit all that story into a 2-3 hour film? And Metroid is being made as well, which I also have doubts on because it's from the producers of Final Destination (one of the most overrated series ever; sorry, just don't like the FD movies; TERRIBLE ACTING!)

Where'd you get that info? Of the confirmed producers, none of them have worked on any of the Final Destination movies, according to IMDb.
