Umm..no surfer talk here but then again there isn't an ocean close enough for the surfers . I don't know anyone who speaks "proper" english but people who try to. I speak the way I want, sometimes well..here it's jsut a whole bunch of slang and everything and I pick it up and use it every now and then but I just talk the way I know how to communicate so it works for me.

Depends on the situation. I have friends who use formal and who use informal language both as well; simply switching to the proper moment when something is needed. Also you can have fun without vulgar or very informal (non-understanbable words) words, it's not required to tell people speaking "normally" are across the board boring What I fortunately never heard are abbreviations from internet and others, like "rofl", "xD" and such - THAT might bee to weird |

I speak slowly, methodically and with a patently bizzare accent. It seems to run in the family. |

You'd be surprised. I've heard people say lol, rofl, and lmao as whole words. Oh, and afk. (edited by Synneth Relmn on 08-08-05 04:30 AM) |

Yeah, a few of my freinds go online but they don't really know the abbreviations so they wouldn't even know what I was saying online sometimes.

Everybody cuts corners in their speech according to what makes speech quicker and less effort, it's inevitable and natural. Don't make me quote my damn Linguistics textbook at you all.

Originally posted by Arwon That comes to work when it comes to SMS. It is limited to 160 characters per message, and if you used 169 of them - for example finishing a sentence - you would have to pay two than only one message. So there is stuff like in German "HDGDL" - "Hab dich ganz doll lieb" used. That doesn't matter and even makes sense - but overusage of them leads more to a cryptic code than an actual text |

Originally posted by Black Lord Whew, I'm glad I'm not the only one who says me and my friend instead of my friend and I. I use that almost all the time when talking to my friends. A few people where I live sometimes use double negatives in a sentence Ex: I don't like this How idiots in my town say it: I don't not like this. |

I just speak like a normal human being... I'm not very articulate in real life, but online I'm much better at constructing sentences. That's just how I am. Oftentimes I speak like a southerner, which does make sense (I was born in Missouri)... though I guess I'm not as bad as some people I know who live even further south.

On a sidenote, does anyone besides me get annoyed when people say things such as "ATM machine" and "PIN number"?

Originally posted by Viceroy Legion In Germany you actually read something like this very often: "CD's ab 5 Euro" "Drink's & Snack's" "Das ist Peter's LSD" The usage of the English apostrophe is usually wrong here (only if the name ends with an "s", "z" or "x"), even worse when it comes to the plural forms, like in the second example. I'm not wondering if people complain if many people lack the proper knowledge ... even if companies make these mistakes |

When I was in middle school I had a serious problem with choosing "much" or "many." Well actually, my problem was just using much for everything, when I would need many. My whole family decided to gang up on me about it and eventually it worked. I use them correctly now. I think.. |
