Who even speaks right? I'm always talking like "Gimme a slice of pizza now." Some people use y'all a lot. But, does anybody catch on to themselves? No. Hell no. We all have a word that we use in a different way. "Gimme some of those slices of pizza. "Does anybody speak most of their words properly"? Example: Guy 1: Hey dude, what happened to you? Guy 2: Them stupied neighbors beat me down with a stick. |

I usually do but most people in school don't know how to speak right. It's so bad that I can't even understand them and they get held back a grade. | |||

I usually speak properly. Of course there are short cuts in speaking.. gimme instead of give me, gonna instead of going to, ect. Not to mention that damn WAZZZZAAAAAAAAAAAA (what's up) thing for the superbowl a few years ago. But I guess you could call that sort of thing American jargon, which isn't really "wrong" considering there's always going to be jargon. For the most part I'm pretty good about it. I think. |

Slang like "gonna" and "gimmie" are okay once in a while, but using slang every chance you get... its not good, and most people will think youre one of those people who failed english. Plus, half the time, your point wont get across. |

I tend to speak good and proper English most of the time. Also, I find it highly ironic that the thread title is not correct English. XD |

I use an inside language amongst my buddies. When I'm applying for a job, you wouldn't catch me saying, "ya'll" or "gimmie". I don't write any slang words on papers either. I typically use words like: -sackle -feltch -ya'll -ese -carro -ho-bag (edited by Cruel Justice on 08-07-05 08:40 PM) |

I'd say my speech is fairly good, and that I speak properly. I have to, as I work on telephones, speaking with clients. When not at work, I know I use a fair few colloquialisms and slang, but other than that I'd still say that I speak properly. |

My English? Uh...hmm...I didn't know there was a really a 'right' way anymore, just different dialects/styles. I will say that I would fail on that whole completely proper English deal though. I'd rather talk like a normal human being rather than a robot. |

I talk... like a normal human, yeah. But I definitely stay away from most colloquialisms since... I dunno. They just don't sound right coming out of my mouth. I'm happy with the way I speak, in other words. |

Some think that English is a language in grammatic decline, that our prodigious use of slang terminology and slurring of words has crippled the entire language beyond repair. I personally believe that so long as you accurately communicate your ideas to your listener, the manner in which you speak is totally up to you. Personally, I don't think there's such a thing as a "proper" way to speak. Think about it, even two hundred years ago the English language was completely different. Through newly invented words (often introduced by poets and playwrights), language has evolved. With a global sentience, where we can communicate instantly with others many hundreds of miles away, with our twenty-four hour news networks, language is simply evolving much faster today than it has in times past. I speak in the manner which I most enjoy, giving no regard for what is considered "proper" or "improper," "correct" or "incorrect." My posts on this forum paint a fairly accurate picture of how I speak in person (my website being quite a bit more accurate), though due to my constituency and location, I find myself incorporating parts of multiple languages into my daily speech. I love language so much, I've been slowly constructing one for the past ten years. |

Well I live in Orange County, but I certainly don't talk like a surfer. >8( I actually find that very annoying. You walk around school and every other word out of people's mouth is DUDE. DUDE BRA'. Jeeze. Bra should never have been short for "brother." =\ |

You're not alone, Danielle. The "dude" syndrome is rampant where I live too. Too bad I'm probably just as much a part of the problem. I talk like everyone else around here. However, here in the middle in Missouri, that's not necessarily....good. My speech isn't near as proper as is my writing on message boards. If you talked to me in person, you'd probably hear a ton of slang and fillers. The biggest problem is probably those "fillers". More than half my sentences usually consist of that, making my speech more pointless mumbling than it is actual information conveyance. You know, things like "Hey dude! Dude, you know at the pool." "Yeah." "Well, ummm, I was there, see? And, OMG, I swear, I saw this dude. Well, uhh, I think it was a dude. That, ummm, hey, that's the whole point here! I couldn't tell, man! Yeah! It was freaking nuts, dude! He, or she, or whatever had boobs AND a bulge, if you know what I'm saying. "Whoa, dude! Yeah, that's some freaky shit!" If it makes you feel any better, stupid things like that are usually the kind of things that keep us entertained. We even bet 5 bucks once on what gender we thought this one dude/chick was at a restaurant! Too bad we never found out because the person who was gonna ask chickened out and the person left. Ok, what the hell is "speaking right"? Is there necessarily a right way to speak? I think that if you talk and can convey what you are trying to say, and everyone else with a brain understands, I think you are speaking right. It doesn't matter if you are speaking in a dialect you grew up with that an Oxford man would say is "not right." Damn, some people are picky. |

Originally posted by Danielle Yes, I also see a lot of people say dude a lot and I live on the border! There's a lot of people at school who talk like a surfer. It's spreading very fast that I'm starting to say dude and some of mine posts beside this one has dude on them already! I got to edit them and get rid of the word dude and fast! |
