Im going off to college REAL soon and I need to buy a laptop. Ive narrowed down my search to these two laptops... Sony Vaio Like-The look (very sleek) the screen is super clear Dont Like- 80 GB (but do I really need more?) Then theres this one... Gateway 8510 GZ Its basically more of the same...but when I say more I mean it. A 17" wide screen is awesome..but sometimes i think if thats a little too big. Also the screen doesnt seem as clear as the Vaio and the look sure isnt as sleek. Can anyone tell me which is honestly the better laptop here? Id really appreciate it. IMO looks mean nothing as long as it works. Have you seen my computers? You can always paint it or something. I would recommend trying to find a demo of the Gateway in a store and checking out the screen; see if you can stand it.

Ive tried them both in the store, the screen doesnt look bad at all. Its just that the Vaios seemed clearer, and Im not sure if it will get annoying hauling around such a huge laptop. (edited by Sion on 07-31-05 10:51 PM) |

Well as long as it's not really heavy, it should be alright. You could always use a backpack.

Weighs 7.7 lbs I guess ill make my final decision when I go tomorrow. Im leaning toward the Gateway right now, because its obviously more powerful and everyone seems to be telling me that its the better choice. But i keep thinking that its just too big....and the Vaio is sooo shiny. Decisions are hard (edited by Sion on 08-01-05 03:00 AM) |

Hm, that could be a bit heavy if you want to carry it around a lot. (For comparison, an Xbox is 9 pounds.) 7.7 may not seem like much but you might start to notice it if you're hauling it around in your arms all day. ...Of course that's nothing if you wear a backpack. You'd be amazed how much easier it is to carry things that way. My textbooks last year were 25 pounds, enough to make them akward to carry with my arms (yeah, I'm skinny ) but I barely even noticed having them in my backpack. Often brought them home by accident. (Though if you go with that idea, make sure it's closed and put the small stuff away from the zippers. Keeps it from falling out or getting snatched.) |

If only the Vaio had 20 more GB and a better Graphics card Id be set...maybe thats do-able. Edit- Ive decided to go with something in the middle.... http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7127003&type=product&productCategoryId=cat15200&id=1109938021370 Its just like that other Vaio but with more power, 1GB of Ram compared to the Gateways 512 MB, and a much better graphics card. Thoughts? (edited by Sion on 08-01-05 03:52 PM) (edited by Sion on 08-01-05 03:52 PM) (edited by Sion on 08-01-05 03:54 PM) (edited by Sion on 08-01-05 03:54 PM) |

the only problem that you'll probably have with it is that your harddrive is going to be pretty slow. I went with a 60gb 7600rpm over an 80gb 5200rpm for that very reason, and yours is running at 4200, so be prepared for slow searches and what not, but other than that, it seems pretty good.
