I posted all this in my oooooooooold 'new hacker' questions topic, that hasnt' been replied to since January. But since I had the last post on that page, it wouldn't let me reply, so here's the pasted text

"Okay; forgive me if this is a horrible display of 'reviving an old topic', but I thought I might as well, instead of making a new one for no reason.

Just to inform everyone I'm /not/ dead, and very very many times since my disappearance have I thought about going back to work and coming back here. Just.. a /lot/ of stuff has happened this last half-year, and I haven't been able to do much stuff like work on SMW hacks..

My hack still exists, though it only has one copleted stage really, but I still wholeheartedly want to continue working hard on it as of today and still, though I've probably now been passed up by many, become a really skilled SMW--and other games--hacker who can put out really fun hacks. I thought I'd just revive this little thread to continue asking questions as I reach difficult areas, and I might just have a bunch soon since this is my first time opening up Lunar Magic in ages.. though reading the posts here and in this very thread as well will freshen my memory quite a bit surely. The only thing I can think of right now, that was bothering me somewhat in the past-- Do you have to do events all in order? If you mess up and find out that you should have put an event before another event that you didn't, will you have to get rid of all events past it to put another in? I recall being annoyed with that when making the worldmap of my first area, hehe."

Shoot me if you want to, but I feel comfortable having one thread in which to ask all my questions and etc, though at the moment I don't have much of any. I apologize if this is in any way a bad habit or I should have put this in another board or something, but since I'm very excited to finally be getting back into SMW hacking and again have the enthusiasm I had a few months ago, I just can't help but make this post as I feel that very soon I'll be bombarding you all with questions again.

But anyway, thoguh I did very little originally anyway, I'm very glad to be back.

I don't know who you are but welcome back.

You should have included a screen or two of your hack, or at least had some questions.

Also, always check out the stickies (the noob one is great) before asking questions. And don't forget the LM help file.

Yeah, I don't remember who you are either, or your hack. You could've at least said what the hack's name was or what it was like, you're quite vague here. Anyway, about the events, they don't have to go in order, just make sure they are set appropriately and that they activiate what you want them to.

Meh, obviously I'm not too known, look at my postcount; the hack was called Mario World Greyscale, here's a few pics:

I probably mislead you in my first post; I was only here for a very short time, and my hack wasn't 'big' or anything at all, I just had a two-page long post full of questions and answers and such and I wished to continue it. You know, to have one place to ask questions along the way as I get back into this.

Oh, and in case you're wondering, the whole game isn't going to be grey; I might even change the name to dispel such thoughts. The first area will look majorly like the screens, but there are two 'halves' of the first area as well as two castles, and from each you go to a different two worlds; west for the 'light' half and right for the 'dark' half. Then once both are completed, you'll be able to access a world in the middle, the final area or two, in which the colors are back to normal.

edit: And I know about the stuff like the little pallette problem with the hud in the top pic, I was just showing so you'd know what the game looks like thus far; any other tips or criticisms are great, though, as long as they're constructive

A "gray-scale" type hack was in the works. I'm not sure who it was, but it was an all chalk type theme. With the levels looking like they took place on a chalk board.

You made this a long time ago right? Well, to stand out in todays hacking sceen, you really need to have ExGFX, ASM, or extraordinary level design and layout. These will not do.

If you are making it for your own pleasure, and you like this, great. Most people around here will not, sorry.

I like your idea of a half dark, half light would tho. If you can really make it stand out and be a fun hack, go for it.

You never know if you don't try right.

Also, what are some questions you have? I would be glad to answer them for you.

Well, this is my /first/ hack. It isn't something I'm making to impress the whole world, it's something I'm making to build my skills in hacking, impress my friends and family, and maybe, if I manage to make the levels fun enough and whatnot, be a solid little hack. Not groundbreaking, not amazing, not BMF material or anything like that, but /solid/. Fun. Enjoyable.

I might eventually add some exgfx and dab in ASM a bit, but with /this/ hack I want to keep it simple for the most part, you know? Just get down level designing, event creating, palette editting, the basics. And make it fun and complete, you know?

Honestly, most of the complete hacks I've played range from 'bleh' to 'really good'. A lot of them may feature lots of fun ExGFX but aren't all that wonderful as far as gameplay. Some of the really good ones are just a little /too/ hard. And not too many I've played have much ASM hacking anyway. I believe that if I work hard and create a complete, playable, challenging but not too difficult hack, with a decent story and a neat little premise behind it (the grey/light/dark/etc theme), it should be solid enough to rank as a 'really good', maybe.

But don't get me wrong--SOMEDAY I wanna be at BMF's level, if possible. But for my first serious hack, I'm gonna try to keep it simple.

Heh. I've spent hours and hours in a row of working with Super Mario World, learning how it works, and learning about 65c816. And I'm still not even close to BMF level. You got a lot of work ahead of you.

You were the very one who said a long time ago that I was 'learning Lunar Magic at an alarming rate', unless someone else has that very same pipe background scheme, so maybe I"m doing good so far I know I might never be that level, but I want to learn this and use it as a hobby for years and years to come, and at least become really good at it. Maybe not BMF level, but able to make really fun, unique hacks in the future, be it near or distant.

Hell, I've been working on SMW for almost 3 years now and I'm not at BMF's hacking level. Mainly because I still haven't bothered to learn anything but the most basic ASM programming and really haven't had any inkling to. You can do great things with a game without touching the code, if you're willing to invest some time.

I'm doing a hack that's grayscaled too, "Super Mario Noir". I've had a hard time finding time to work on it too. Anyways, yeah, your grayscaling looks really, really nicely done.

I think most of the great things you can do without touching the code of SMW have already been done nowadays. I think if you're gonna make something that'll stand out you have to get your hands dirty.

And anyway, that was back when I thought you'd stick around, Breakman. Learning LM is one thing but getting a good hack out is quite another. And you'll never get one done if you drop off the face of the earth every so often. Part of that comment was because the influx of n00bs had me forgetting how being competant worked. Your lack of stupidity was a nice reminder.

I don't think the palettes look nice here, though. The status bar changes colors a lot and I think the spots on that black background mountain are too light. And what's with the bright yellow text in the textbox? I liked the old white text better. Also, you'll have to make the background less vivid because being completely gray makes things harder to see. Lighten the bg.

I disagree with this point. It may not be the next best thing since sliced bread if it's a level only or levels + graphics hack, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't enjoy playing it. There is something to be said of a hack that's just simply fun to play.

I don't think that a hack has to have anything extra to it to be good, as long as the levels are fun and there aren't any glitches( or very few). I'm looking forward to this hack, the light/dark idea sounds good.

@JJ, nice layout.

Well, geez. You guys (well, at least some of you) are making me feel like I have no chance to ever make anything worth giving a second look at all, ever. Because one of the hardest parts of anyone's life just happened to me (metamorphosis from child to adult), thusly cutting down my time/attnetion span for stuff like a mario world hack, that means I'll 'never get the project done'? I think not. Sure, there may be some ExGFX (I've even already slightly editted several sprites), but I don't want to overload this game with extra junk like that as it's going to be my first hack; I'm looking to make it overall just simple and enjoyable. I mean, I don't know what 'impresses' most you folk, but I personally wouldn't at all mind playing any SMW hack even if it changed nothing at all about the game except for stage/map layout and textual changes; I'm not trying to BREAK ANY RECORDS or SET NEW STANDARDS, like I've said very many times before, but I think that just making a NORMAL, simple, but well-made hack, and even throwing in a couple fun things like palette edits, some ExGFX, etc, should be at least enjoyable. I mean, I'm sure many of you have played very many 'simple' hacks, but how many of them are well-made, fun, and complete, three things I'll make sure mine is before I fully release it?

I know about the hud color problems, I accidentally editted the wrong color in the palette is all. I'll fix it.

I honestly really like my pallette, is it really that bad? I'll check into those spots, I might make it a bit lighter, but overall it looks fine to me...

Work on pleasing yourself (perverts, please keep your jokes to yourself ) before everyone else. If you think it's a job well done with absolutely no room for improvement, that should be enough. Of course, don't be surprised if no one else shares your optimistic outlook, there's always going to be someone with something to complain about (more often than not around here, it seems, but thems the ropes kid).

I agree that it is a shame that many people expect ASM and extra graphics and whatnot - really, do we need all of that for a good game? People keep saying to newcomers that it is practically *required*. It's excellent to have, yes...but a game can still be great without it.

Come to think of it...I can't really think of any recent finished hacks at all...so how do we all know what we should expect, huh? Someone is making demands that they, themselves, do not meet.

Maybe I'm just babbling, I don't know.

BTW, Breakman, I do remember you. And I liked your idea for game.

I have to agree. Level design is the most impotant thing in a hack. I've played some hacks that had ExGFX out the wazoo, but at the end of the day, they were just boring.

I think GFX is the most important thing in a hack. I wouldn't touch a level-only hack. The thing is: don't give up like Master M did. I've only been hacking for 6 months and i've already won an award, so just keep trying and who knows? You may eventually reach BMF's level.
