Simply put, do you work? And if yes then, what do you do? I thought this might be an interesting topic, I'm kind of curious to see what other people here with jobs do: As for myself, I am a Curtosey Tech at Jiffy Lube, which is an Oil Changing place for cars in the US. We also deal with AC's, Radiators, Tire Rotations, mostly all of the fluids, lights, and so on. I've been working there for almost 2 months now. What I do as a Curt Tech:
Really, my jobs not that bad, even though I made it sound "quite" annoying, it's just that the 8-10 hour shifts get old. I also hate having to work in the weather, here in KS, humidity is a major issue, so it gets pretty hot, and we do have to wear special uniforms that aren't really "fitting". I can say my pay is quite good though, and makes me feel better about the job. Here in the US minimum wage is pretty low, $5.75 I believe? I make a few more $'s than that, so it's all good pay wise. I hate my Customer Service Adviser (CSA). He, is constantly yelling at myself and others, telling us what to do, and calling us things like "Tiger", "Skooter", and so on. And he's just annoying to look out. My Assistant Manager, is pretty annoying too. Thinking he's hilariously funny, and knows everything, he always keeps me way after closing, and makes me clean the basement (the section where employee's get into to work under the cars), which is something I shouldn't be doing. My other Assistant Manager, whom I usually close with on the weekdays, is cool though. He's also said "Once you can show me you can do curts quickly, I'll teach you how to work on the hood", which is working with the Oil Changing, and easier things (seriously, Curtosey Tech's get it like the worst). I've also gotten hints that I could be getting a 50 cent raise soon, so that's also refreshing to here. My job is decent. For a first job, I'm not complaining at all, and I have decided I probably will stick with it even after I turn 18 (being 18 opens more opportunities, but by then I may be doing other things than Curtosies). But, it's not always easy. It's muggy, there's annoying people I have to listen too, and things get repetitive and it is hard work (I serioulsy think I've bulked up a bit since I've started working there). So please, next time you get an Oil Change, show the people some love and respect. So, how's your "jorb", if you have one? (I didn't mean to make this an Epic Tale) Edit: On a side note, it took me over a year to finally find a job. (edited by Xeolord on 07-23-05 09:12 PM) (edited by Xeolord on 07-23-05 09:21 PM) |

Well, I've spent part of the summer as a volunteer counselor in training at a Boy Scout Camp. As for a paying job, I plan to get a job at Publix or something in the semi-near future.

I work for Auburn Industrial, a contracting company for the mining dynamo know as INCO. At work I: Have to wear safety equipment like -Hard hat -Safety glasses/goggles(acid) -Coveralls -Leather or Rubber(acid) gloves -Steeltoe/Rubber boots -Hafe face/Full face respirator -Ear plugs -Five-point harnest Work with -Nickel Dust -Copper Dust -Catalyst Dust -Concentrated Lead and Arsenic -Acid Filters -Vaccum Trucks(Dust/Water/Gas) -Extreme Heat(Highest was 67 Celcius) What do I do exactly? I cleaning up after INCO, when they make a mess, a crew and I are brought to the site with our proper equipment, and begin the job. Most of the time, we are setting up for it, hauling 250lbs vaccum hoses to the site, connecting it to the truck, tagging off safety valves and ropping off the area. I work there for the duration of the Shutdown. The Shutdown is the time of year INCO stops production to clean and repair their equipment, a tune-up of the entire plant. This period of time usually lasts 30 days. During those 30 days, I work 12 hour shifts, everyday until the Shutdown ends. I make 12.91$ for the first 8 hours of a shift, then I make time-and-a-half for the following 4 hours. When I work night shift, I make and extra 50 cents and hours and on weekends, I make an extra 75 cents an hours. I'm desperately looking. I used to babysit for money, and I was able to make quite a bit of cash from that, but now it seems all the families I babysat for have kids that are all grown up.. no more use for a babysitter. I got an interview at Target yesterday, I'm really hoping they call me back for a "second interview" as they said, and after that would be when I get the job. I'll keep hoping. This is the first interview I've gotten from all the applications I've turned in to various supermarkets and retail stores. |

I don't really have a real job, just cause I am waiting til after high school, which is stupid I know but my dad pays me real good. My dad buys, remodels, and resells houses for a living. And most days I will just help out around his houses. Cleaning up trash/worksite. Moving building supplies. Or I will do landscaping work at houses that are already remodeled and just need "cosmetic" work done to them.

I have a McJob. McDonald's. I am a productive worker who only makes $7.10 an hour. Then again, compared to most 17 year olds I know... well, actually, its about the same. I do everything there. Kitchen, window, front counter, drive thru orders, stocking from truck, stocking other stuff, counting waste, counting cash, figuring out net profit for the month, translating between Spanish and English for people so they can somewhat communicate.... Doing it about 30 hours a week during school year, and right now about 40-45 a week... though last week was 50! Whoo! |

Mondays, wednesdays, fridays, and saturdays find me at Toys 'R' Us, a gigantic chain of toy stores that reaches far beyond the borders of the United States and into the world venue, bringing screaming brats temporary plastic happiness on a minute basis. The sun never sets on the Toys R Us empire. I stock shelves, deal with customers, hit on my amazingly hot co-workers (to no avail), run cash registers, and push shopping carts in 95 degree weather. The pay's alright. Thursdays and Sundays find me working at The Lyon's Den, a small, family owned restaurant that employs me mainly through nepotism, but also because I do my best to work as hard as I can for said family because they have given me so much over the years. Pay's pretty good, it's my extra money (since my TRU money goes straight into the bank), and with it I live comfortably with the support of my parents. I work about 40-50 hours a week with both jobs combined. Sometimes more. This is only phase one, however, of my "starving indie rock tween" lifestyle that I plan to emulate when I get out of college. My car will run on hopes and dreams and my house will be heated by good intentions. |

I now work 30 hours a week at a pub called the Waltzing Weasel. I WAS a manager for my first shift. Then they discovered that I was too good a worker to be a manager. So I was "demoted" but given a higher pay. So, now I work at 9 bucks an hour. Then, because I'm too good of a worker to be worth the money...they fired three other people. I feel terrible ever starting to work there. |

Eh, my job is more complicated to just write down so I'll cut and paste my job description/duties: Loads and unloads nuclear and nonnuclear munitions, explosives, and propellant devices on aircraft. Manages, controls, maintains, and installs aircraft bomb, rocket, and missile release, launch, suspension, and monitor systems; guns and gun mounts; and related munitions handing, loading, and test equipment. Loads, unloads, and positions munitions on aircraft. Loads, positions, performs safing operations, and unloads munitions. Uses handling, loading, and checkout procedures and equipment. Tests suspension, launch, and release systems for retentive locking, and manual or electrical release. Analyzes malfunctions. Performs functional checks of launch and suspension systems. Prepares munitions and inspects post loading weapons. Operates handling and loading equipment, and mates munitions with aircraft release, launch, and suspension systems. Loads and services aircraft gun systems. Tests electrical and electronic circuitry for continuity, voltage, and proper operation. Tests for unwanted electrical signal or power before connecting electrically actuated explosives and propellants. Installs ground safety devices on munitions and gun system components to prevent inadvertent detonation, launching, or firing. Inserts and removes impulse cartridges associated with fuel tanks and pylons. Adjusts and installs fuses, boosters, and delay elements in conventional munitions. Inspects, repairs, and maintains aircraft release, launch, suspension, and monitor systems; aircraft guns; and related equipment. Operates, inspects, and performs operator maintenance on related munitions handling, loading, and test equipment. Examines for visual defects and proper installation of systems components such as munitions ejector racks, loading and suspension devices, shackles, rocket pods, pylons, aircraft ammunition, boosters, and feed chutes. Bore sights and performs after-firing inspection of aircraft guns. Examines aircraft guns for defects. Analyzes malfunctions of munitions launch, release, suspension, and monitor systems, and associated handling and loading equipment. Disassembles, repairs, or replaces mechanical, electrical, electronic, and pneudraulic mechanisms of launch and release systems, and aircraft gun systems. Removes, disassembles, and inspects parts and subassemblies for damage, rust, corrosion, or acceptable clearances and tolerances. Makes adjustments and applies lubricants and preservatives. Performs serviceability tests on aircraft guns, gun systems, and munitions associated suspension equipment. Performs armament systems maintenance functions. Modifies munitions launch, release, suspension, and monitor systems to improve efficiency. Determines probable effect of modifications on future maintenance and operational problems. Plans, organizes, and directs aircraft armament systems maintenance activities. Establishes and evaluates performance and training standards, maintenance controls, and procedures. Checks methods and techniques used to load and unload munitions on aircraft, to repair and maintain aircraft release and gun systems, and to maintain, repair, and modify associated equipment. Ensures compliance with policies, directives, and safety procedures. Analyzes productivity and work quality. Evaluates operational efficiency of aircraft guns and munitions systems, and recommends modification. And I take out the trash after every shift. I've been known to mop a hanger or two in my time as well. When I first got to this base, I worked on the F-15 but my squadron has switched over to the F/A-22. We're the first operational squadron in the world to be using them. I can't discuss most of it due to security reasons but I do feel sorry for the pilots because any air to air fighting for them is going to be a complete bore now. No competition. So yeah, that's what I do. |

I work at Red Lobster in Ocala, Florida. I am a host/busser. I do both of those, bussing less than I am hosting. Pretty much, when I am a host I seat the guests down at their tables as soon as I can or greet them when they walk in the door. It isn't hard or stressing until Friday and Saturday night, which is when guests start wondering why they have to wait to be sat when there is a table available. Kind of simple to know why, but the guests see an open table and just assume that there is a shortage of servers. Don't ask... Bussing is simple. I just go to a table, clear it off, and then wipe it clean and set it up. Simple, but I lose hours by bussing. I get paid $6.75, expecting a raise by A) Promised 7 dollars an hour when a new busser who started after me got paid that amount, and B) I got my six month review and am going to get another quarter an hour, which I need. This would bring it up to about $7.25 an hour. Not great, but being 16, it is the best I am probably going to get with as many hours as I |

Oh yeah. I also have a secret job. I do minor volunteer analysis of modern internet trends for a shadowy ass organization that I don't even know where they're based. :o I just get a Chapters gift-certificate every 6 months worth 25 bucks so I'm happy selling souls to someone who is probably eating them like I eat cereal. |
