I search 3 months for a good NES emulator... And I don't found one... So, which one is the best?

Well, that depends on what you're trying to get with it. FCEU, LoopyNES, and NESticle do well for performance, while Nintendulator is among the most accurate and FCEUXD (SP) is designed for hackers/programmers. If you just want to play a commercial game, get one of the former, because Nintendulator is pretty slow on low-end machines; but if you're going to be trying your hand at hacking/programming, then get Nintendulator and FCEUXD (SP).

as beneficii mentioned, there is no 'best' A few things should be mentioned: Nintendulator sacrifices EVERYTHING for accuracy (as in, it's dreadfully slow and doesn't have lots of fun features) while NESticle sacrifices EVERYTHING for speed (as in, it's a real piece of shit and should only be used if your computer can't handle anything else). Those are the two extreme emulators that I wouldn't really recommend using for casual play. Most other emulators are more balanced -- some faster and less accurate, while some slower and more accurate. Emus I would recommend checking out (in the order I'd recommend them) FCEU (or FCEUXD) [most recommended] NEStopia VirtuaNES NNNesterJ [least recommened -- which is weird because I used to be a diehard fan of NNNJ] LoopyNES [not really recommended unless your comp is too slow to handle anything else. If you can run another emulator then do so -- but if they all lag this one might be your best bet] Other emus I can't really comment on or just plain don't understand the appeal: Nessie (seems good but haven't really used it enough to say) JNes (is very popular but I can't figure out why because it's not very outstanding at all) FWNES (older and probably less accurate, but I know a few people who are all like "omfg you forgot to mention fwnes" -- even though I never really used it myself, For the love of God do NOT use NESticle unless you ABSOLUTLY HAVE TO. NESticle is HORRID and people that recommend it should be shot. Of course I pretty much exclusively use my own emu -- which you might want to check out </plug>. Although it by no means stacks up to the biggie emus like FCEU. |

I was a fan of Nesticle years ago, but now I mainly use FCE Ultra. It's just overall nice and easy to use. NNNesterJ is good too, but it seems to crash on me pretty often. =\ |

I recommend two emulators; FCEU and Jnes, especially FCEU. It has all necessary things you could have. Same goes to Jnes, which seems to also have a patching feature, great for playing complete hacks or just those hacks with enchanted graphics. |

Can anyone explain the fascination with JNes? I mean yeah it's a decent emu in that it runs games. But its accuracy isn't remarkable and it is totally lacking in features. FCEU, hell even NNNJ blow it completely out of the water, yet people still recommend it. I don't mean to sound like I'm knocking it... it just boggles my mind. Why is such a mediocre emulator so popular? Seriously, can you explain? |

Well, it's somewhat simple and easy to use in terms of gaming. Also, the patching feature is reason (even though you have to rename your ROM to same as your .ips but it won't take long) I use it and it has always been my favourite emulator to get some screenshots. Of course, if I want to rely on making movie or other nice features, I use FCEU. Somehow, I have always liked to play games with Jnes as it's very comfortable to use. I'm not sure, maybe other people recommend to use it for same reasons. |

That's what I'm realizing. FCEU and NNNJ have the same patching feature (in fact, pretty much every emu does). JNes doesn't really offer anything besides bare-bones system emulation. And it even only does a mediocre job of that (when speaking in terms of accuracy). I get the impression people just recommend it because it's what they've always used -- despite it not really being up to par with the others. |

I think everyone agreed on FCEU. Most places you'll find will say the same thing. If nothing else, I've also got blip's version of it which plays back recorded movies (with re-recording). |

FCEU had replaced NESticle as my favorite emulater a long time ago. If it weren't for the fact NESticle started producing horrible sound quality, I'd still be using it probably, as it was the first NES emu I've used. (Same reason I still use ZSNES, but I havn't heard of anything better.) The only thing I wish FCEU had, aside from some of the funtions that NESticle had, like the in-game graphic editors (although nothing you did could be saved as far as I know) is the speed up to be +, but for some inane reason, it's the ~ key. |

Yeah, FCEUXD (SP) is the best way to go. I use it for everything now. Of course, I started out the early days with Loopynes when nothing else would work. Switched to NNNesterJ and used that for an incredibly long period of time. Discovered hacking, switched to Nesticle which wasn't using that very long because FCEUD had a palette viewer. Discovered how much quicker it was to use it than Neticle for palettes so I went to FCEUD. Until FCEUXD (built in hex editor got me). Then FCEUXDSP. Having conditional breakpoints for the debugger quickly made it my favorite. In other words, FCEU. |

FCEUXDSP is my best as of right now because it's way better than my old emulator Nester and NesterJ. FCEUXDSP can go full screen with a push of the button unlike Nester. Also, on my Nester, the colors look awful when your moving but it doesn't happen in FCEUXDSP. You must have this emulator, get it at Zophar's Domain. By the way, if you don't have a Dos computer, you can forget Nesticle because it only runs on Dos, it didn't work with me because I have Windows.

One thing bugs me about FCEU... Escape quits the program, no prompt or anything. On every other emulator I know of, it shows the menu. Way annoying. Also, F4 goes fullscreen as opposed to Alt+Enter. How about some standard key combos?

My favorite emulator is FCEUxd. It has great quality in graphics and decent in sound, and has extra features for debugging & ROM hacking. I use these extra features (mainly the Debugger and the hex editor) to edit ASM code and other stuff for my hacks.

If you want unusual features, Ubernes has a high score support, and even worldwide high scores. It can be downloaded here PS: if you want to take a look at the high scores, go to here. I'm actually the highest score in galaga, and 6th place in the overall scores. My nick there's Megaman, and if you don't trust me, look at the place where I'm from. It says V region, Chile and Viña del mar is in the V region of Chile |
