Do you find this to be a bit of an issue? I see nothing but rips, not only that but they are from different games, easy to point out. A lot of the times I find that the graphics don't fit at all and even Yoshi's Island is getting boring. Before I pointed out the palette issue and no one seemed to care then but now bad colours are something to be considered. I was wondering if anyone had similar opinions?

I dislike rips. It's unoriginal and overused. In my opinion, decent hand drawn graphics are several times better than perfect rips.

Hand drawn graphics are sure better, but not all people around here can draw very good, that's why they use rips instead. I myself rip from games too, but not only from games like YI or SMAS. I rip from Castlevania, SML, Kirby and some other games nobody has ripped from.

Depends on the rip.

If I can open a rom and just copy and paste it into a tile editor, forget it.

If I have to take 8x8 tiles and import it in a tile editor and then recolor them to work with the palette, then maybe.

I just don't like rips. Handmade graphics are more... original and unpredictable. Besides, if you don't like something, you can easily change it then. You can do that with rips, but nobody really does that... not that I know of...

Rips are great, but like most everyone else, hand drawn graphics are better. That's why I fill my hack up with rips, customize those rips (with new palettes, and some edited graphics), and then fill in all remaining space (about half) with hand drawn stuff. I also rip from other games that almost no one has played. Most games I rip from are japanese too.

Plus I have a few things in my hack from N64 games (mainly SM64) that look pretty good if I do say so my self. The palette is obviously a bit smaller, but it went from about 24 colors down to 16, so it isn't that big of a deal anyway. Plus my dithering technique hardly changes the picture anyway. Makes it a bit grainey tho.

Rips = Awesome.
Hand Drawn = Superior.

*flexes drawing muscles*

Don't get me wrong, I love a good rip, but nothing beats creating your own graphics or playing a hack with someone else's.

I've been known to draw a fair bit of my graphics by hand

Because the thing is, ripping takes next to no skill. A trained monkey could do it. Now, one could say the same general thing about hacking with specialized utilities that allow you to bypass all the difficult stuff, but at least there's an art to level design.

Definitely, I'd have to say that while rips can be nice when they're used sparingly, a hack made of rips isn't very good at all. There has to be a lot of handrawn GFX in a hack for me to really think it's great, which is why SMO scored high with me.

I think rips are okay now and then, but a hack shouldn't depend on them. I mean, if a person wants to make a level that looks like YI or SMAS, that's fine, but if they just want something different from the SMW graphics, then they should make their own.

Some of us have to rip, because our drawing skills rival those of a chicken. But at least try to rip from obscure games, or edit them a bit. Clever use of some graphics can provide cool results; you'd be surprised what you can make from the original SMW graphics. If you rip from some unpopular game and/or edit the graphics a bit and use them in unusual ways, people may not even realize they're rips.

So what if people like to rip? Does that make their hacks bad? I myself am a rip artist (no pun intended), and I am also fond of RLM. I do like to make some fixes here and there, though. And you're right about the palette issues. I can't draw much, but I've made some tilesets based off of other's original work. However, I do the right thing and stick their names in the credits. After all, they deserve some time in the spotlight too.

If the leveldesign is good and logic, it Shouldn't matter if there is ExGFX or not, but ExGFX of all kind have to suit the level, else it's just out of place, and it has to be done good (No unfinished, incomplete or corrupt graphics please.

Rips don't really bother me at all. Even some of the ones that are overused, I don't mind seeing, as long as there's a good variety included in the hack so it isn't the same uniform thing throughout. The overuse of rips however does veer away from proper identification of a hack, since there are so many hacks that have the same rips it's hard to remember which is which. Like when I haven't played a hack in a long time and I want to revisit, I'll be like, "Wait, what's that hack with the SMAS rips again? MarioWorldX, Luigi's Adventure, SMWR, what is it?!?!?" Hand-drawn graphics or rips that aren't overused will make a hack more memorable to me. Plus, as you can see some hacks do require rips, such as peter_ac's SMB remakes. Obviously level design plays a major role in my enjoyment of the hack also.
