When the letters A, B, C, D, E, and F get inserted into the number system, the question come to, How does one pronounce them? Obviously, A, B, C, D, E, and F by themselves are pronounced as they are in the alphabet, but what about 1A? You can't really pronounce ay-teen, because 18 is pronounced that way and that would cause confusion. Same goes for A0. My solution is to shorten the A, pronouncing ah-teen and ah-ty, but what do you guys do? Some of my pronunciations, and proposed spellings (made intentionally complicated so they can seem more established) for writing out the words: 1A, ahteen, acteen (the c is silent, as in indict and Connecticut) 1B, beeteen, bieteen 1C, seeteen, ceiteen (i before the e except after c) 1D, deeteen, deiteen (so not to confuse with die) 1E, eeteen, yteen (what the hey) 1F, efteen, eghteen (the gh is pronounced like an f, as in cough and trough and tough) A0, ahty, aghty (the c would make it look too much like act, so the silent gh, as in though, takes over) B0, beety, biety C0, seety, ceity D0, deety, deity (did I miss something?) E0, eety, yty F0, efteen, avoteen (if the olo in colonel can be made to be pronounced er then anything be made to be pronounced like anything ) (I debated whether to put this in the Craziness Domain, then I decided we were talking about something edumacational like spelling and alternative number systems, so this went into the General Forum. Please move it, mod, if you disagree. ) |

Weird...I was thinking of the same exact thing a few hours before reading this thread . I decided I would just spell it out. For example, 1A would be "One-Ay". |

They're pronounced individually. One-A, and so on. Let's take a closer look. 2 That's a two. F That's an F. 2. F. Programming languages and terms are also not exactly things that you'd say follow the conventions of modern english. (edited by Cymoro on 07-21-05 02:51 AM) |

Originally posted by Cymoro I considered pronouncing them that way, but then I thought, why would I pronounce 1A so differently than, say, 19? If you were counting them aloud, then you would want to try to adhere to existing forms, or at least I would. |

This thread doesn't really have much point, and Cymoro wanted it closed, but was too lazy to do it. *SLAM!* EDIT: Well, I got asked to reopen it, so here we are. (edited by Grey on 07-21-05 10:58 AM) |

I don't usually find the need to say these numbers out loud (unless I'm talking to myself), but if I do, I just say every letter and number. Say it was "5A3D" for example, I'd say "five ay three dee". As for spelling them, it'd pretty much be spelling out the numbers, then writing the letter. I don't see much point in writing "eff" or "dee" for "f" and "d" Originally posted by Kawa-oneechan That's quite original It does make sense though, so it works |

I pronounce, when talking about hex, each digit individually. 1A would be "One A" 17 would be "One Seven" 1D8 would be "One D Eight" Thats how I have always done it. Makes it less confusing for me as 40 and 4D are pronounced (and sometimes kinda look) the same. |

Well, it looks like must of us do pronounce the numbers and letters individually. That's a good thing, too. 1A - 18 80 - A0 - AD B0 - BD C0 - CD D0 - DD etc. It just wouldn't work. But really, when would you say these numbers aloud? |
