I don't know how many of you remember my take on SMW, but it's slowly moving back in progress. Anyone have a good tileset for the inside of a pyramid? And, what's the correct palette for Marle from Chrono Trigger? She's going to be a small easter egg. As you'll notice, I've got many decent tilesets and palettes. However, I need help making levels to go with them. Check out these.

Ignore the dithering. That's because it's a GIF. It was 10mb as BMP! Nice seaside arrangement, notice the little clouds? Any layout ideas?

People familiar with my hack should know this one. But, I'm trying to make it look like an actual desert (as opposed to it's previous blue or pink incarnations).

You've probably been here too. As you'll see (or not?), there's a reason for it being called "Invisible Haunt". No invisible objects are in this screenshot though.

This one's new. Recognize the trees and gravestones? They're both from different games. However, the R.I.P. text (look closely) was added by me. You might laugh at the overworld name. What about help on this one's design?

I'm still cleaning up a small mess inside this ROM. Don't worry, the affected level isn't on the overworld. You'd have to open LM and hold Page Down to find it. Release date? As made famous by Duke Nukem, when it's done.

I tried to click the Download button for the SMW hack but it said that the page you requested is not found.

OK. That's the outdated link. Go to http://www.geocities.com/theclaw135/filelist.html and scroll to the bottom. Click on SMWSE.zip. This file is from November 2003, as opposed to May like that one.

Thanks for the new link. It worked and I'm already playing it but I can't pass the first level, the gray plains. Anyway, it's a great hack.

Wow. At first I thought those trees were from Mortal Kombat II. Great hack though.

Screen 1: The black in the sand doesn't look so good. If you want to go for a desert look try making sand colors that don't really contrast too much. Also, the white space in between the pyramids doesn't look good either, I'd go with darker colors there. Plus, where is Mario?

Screen 2: Okay, although the FG colors do not look good. I see you are using FG color 0 for the ground, and that doesn't go good with any tileset except the grass tileset, since the beige is meant for the dirt and the green is meant for the grass. I'd recommend changing it to the ghost house palette or creating your own.

Screen 3: This is supposed to be a graveyard? For a graveyard it looks pretty chipper. You defintely want to darken the palettes, such as the blue sky, and the trees are too light also, and maybe remove the flowers because the gives off a happy scene.

This does look good, the only problem you seem to have are palettes, so you just need to work on those.

1) Try a more "deserty" pallete, mix in the bronze and yellow or brown, something. Mario died before the pic was snapped, right?

2) Needs some work on the pallete problem. Other than that everything's fine.. except that FG pallete.

3) The trees are from Wario Land 2, the grass... I'm guessing the same game. Give the grass a more whilted look, maybe "dead" grass. Darken the pallete for the trees and sky. Maybe grab the pallete from the nighttime scene from where the tress came from on Wario Land 2.

Looks good, shows promise. But the link comes up dead on me. You can probably fix that up, right? Other than that, good job.

Yeah, correct. That's the only thing I seem to see wrong... It seems to be comming along pretty well though. Nice work on it so far.

I'll look into it. My next plan is moving levels from the "TEST" replacement slots into being accessible from the map. Note that I still understand nothing about overworld editing, it's only minor changes right now. I'm a slight perfectionist when it comes to level design (it's my primary hacking focus as well). I won't map anything less then excellent. That's why so few levels can be found without LM.
I thought that graveyard was a bit too bright for the setting. It's nice to hear positive reviews after so long without posting news at Acmlm's about it. There's a different patch at my other site, http://geocities.com/star_amy7. I don't remember what it's like, since that page might be 18 months old.

Is there a SNES palette archive or something? I could really use some to make ripping GFX easier. My hack is more difficult than the original SMW, so I'll write an FAQ for any levels which people have trouble with. I did that for one or two a long time ago. The most challenging places to reach are Top Secret Area, and the Green Switch palace for now. But when I start work on the Star World and Special World, I'll up the notch big time! The toughest hack I've played is SMW:TLC. That will change. Hardest than Super Ghouls & Ghosts? Oh yeah...

That tree happens to be in the first level of Wario Land 3, and those graves are from LTTP.

What's with that level? It has like 15 screens of nothing between the two halves. I hope you don't intend for the players to actually swim all that way. And if you didn't, you should put some kind of barrier there (or just make it two levels) so they can't (don't just remove the water; remember the cape). That is unless it's supposed to be a secret.

Nothing. It's incomplete! That blue stuff is just the background, not water. I didn't even think of mentioning it before. I showed the level because it has a good tileset, but I'm out of ideas for layout. Wanna help? I guess the term is "writer's block". The graveyard is now shades of brown with a deep red background. It should be more spooky. And, I fixed the black part of that sand. No more yellow muncher plants either.

Uhrg, Bitmap. Why does nearly everyone use bitmaps? Is it so hard to select PNG when making them?

The desert-shot looks strange, the ghost-house one has green wood as floor. The forest one is good, though...
