Okay, first off, does anyone know of a program that can get rid of this spyware, that doesn't just scan my computer to tell me what is on there and then tells me that I have to buy the program to get it off?  Okay, it all started when Norton expired, so we went about a month or so without it on te other computer. During that time, we noticed that we got this one nasty spyware on the computer. About a month ago, we finally got Norton up and running, but the little bugger is still there. It causes pop-ups, it creates links on pages when there are no links there to begin with, each time you open up IE, it takes you to about:blank, and creates a new homepage instead of the one that you want, and it won't let me run City of Heroes. We'e tried to use each and Destory to get rid of it, as well as Adware and the add-on, the VX2 removal. Each time I run Adware, VX2 is always there and it always comes back each time I run the program. When I run the removal tool, it keeps telling me that the system is clean. Now, I tried to do some digging, and came up with atlou32.exe, as one of the problems. I tried to just delete the damn thing, but it keeps running in the background, even when I try to shut it down from doing so. Now, is there anyway that I can just do this mannually, or a program that can help me out, or should I just reformat the whole damn thing? |

| Something what might help you in finding it, might be HiJack This. It shows all running processes and auto-start items. I recommend downloading this, putting it into a folder (the desktop is not recommended for it, since it wants to do backups when you want to fix something using HJT later). http://216.180.233.162/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe Run it, press "Do a system scan and save a logfile", then copy all the contents from the opening Notepad window (hijackthis.log) and paste it into this thread. It may help us finding the problem. Very often, malware writes itself into the registry or auto-start, so removing just helps until you reboot your machine  (edited by Surlent on 07-14-05 08:52 AM) |

Also, I would suggest try removing it in safe mode. You start safe mode by hammering F8 alot after the BIOS screen is show and before windows start, then select safe mode. Some viruses and malware isn't removeable otherwise, as Windows is runnng the malware/virus.  ;If you can use the commandline, then select "Safe mode with commandline" or whatever it's named in the English version. It's even more safe than regular safe mode, but... yeah. Good luck. |

| Whenever I need to get rid of a troublesome program, I just use DOS. If you have XP, you'll need to find some NTFS drivers for it though. |

| Platform: Windows XP SP1 (WinNT 5.01.2600) You should install ServicePack 2 for XP. If you are afraid of your computer going mad: Mostly the machines already had problems before installing it. But it is really recommended to install it, since especially you are using Internet Explorer, at least some nasty security holes were closed Some entries seem suspicious. | VX2 IS ABSOLUTE HELL. I used to have it but i got rid of it with the ad-ware add-on (which you already tried.) anyways if it doesn't go away after a long time there's always the reformat... i can't really offer much advice but www.pandasoftware.com have some things that might kill it. it costs alot but there are trials. good luck getting rid of that awful thing. |

| I like it when people have to throw in their two cents for those who use IE. But do I say anything when people use a something that I don't like? Tried Firefox and that other one, and I just didn't like them. Besides, the other computer really doesn't go online that much, its for games, which is the reason why I won't d/l the 2nd service pack. It won't allow me to run some of the games that is on that system. | |||

He's got a point, though... Using IE is how most of these get in. It's not a matter of "hey, try this program instead", it's "if you used a different program you probably wouldn't have this problem".  |

| So try some more. Do you have an XP/2K install CD? They have the Recovery Console which is like a crappy DOS remake for NTFS. It probably won't let you do anything useful (access denied my ass) but it's worth a try. |

| ctfmon.exe isn't bad. Also, that iexplore.exe in Program Files really is the IE browser. No need to delete it, just not use it. Might want to check that weather program too. So many of these are spyware... (edited by HyperHacker on 07-17-05 10:39 AM) |
