What kind of B.S. is this? Read the amendment. The state can't tell me what to practice, and they can't restrict my practice as long as it is within the laws of the U.S. Where does it say I can't pray in school? It says I can't force someone else to do so, but I can do what I want as long as I don't disrupt anyone else. And isn't the state removing the ten commandments from a courthouse forcing athiesm on me? A statue affects nobody, but putting the government ripping it (the ten commandments) out on the news forces atheistic principles on me. Think about it!

EDITED BY GREY: God damn, that was pissing me off.

THere is, at least here in Virginia, a moment of silence in public schools. This can be used to pray - quietly - but if there was on official 'prayer time', that would be seen as the state supporting a religion to the exclusion of others.

Ten Commandments: Same thing. Having them put up in a courthouse or other government-run public building can be seen as the state supporting one religion more than others.

Now, maybe we can get an intelligent debate going here so this doesn't turn into a waste of a perfectly good topic. However, if this is just going to be arguments over the interpretation of such seperation, then there's no point.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

Yeah, you can't have an establishment of a state religion in the United States. A citizen of that nation is allowed to worship freely. To have manditory prayers contravenes this.

Seperation of CHURCH and state. Not MOSQUE and state. Or SYNAGOGUE and state. Therefore, it is perfectly logical to allow Jews and Muslims to instill their beliefs into American law. Duh.

Nope.

"A statue affects noone, but putting on the news the government ripping it out forces atheistic principles on me"

Haha, no it doesn't.

America is funny because it has an extremely secular government structure combined with an extremely religious population. So people get really really worked up over it due to this disparity.

That said, I'm constantly amazed at the ability of the dominant white christian majority in the US to imagine itself as persecuted and marginalised. I'm surprised their heads don't all explode from cognitive dissonance.

Way to protect christianity. Put BS in your post. Brilliant. And please end questions with question marks(?).

The state isn't resticting your rights to practice your beliefs. They may be restricting your being able to spread the faith to others, which is part of being christian, so really, the state doesn't understand christianity.

And as for forcing these principle on you, they aren't. You are free to believe what you want. Of course, with that mindset, leaving it there would serve the same purpose as removing it. Anyway, it's a touchy subject. But the government always wins. Sorry.

Since the absurdity of this question defeats itself, I'll instead propose something to demonstrate such. What do you say if, next to each plaque with the Ten Commandments, we place a plaque that reads, "That other plaque is wrong. There is no god."

I've never understood the debate over having the 10 commandments on gov't property. What purpose does it serve? Do you need a reminder when you're going to pay that parking or drinking ticket what the ten commandments are? If you can't remember them go to church more often. If anyone can tell me a practical reason to have them on gov't land I'd love to hear it. We are not Jesusland. Yet.

Precisably. The idea is to turn the US into Jeebusland. Although I quite like Slay's idea.

"they can't restrict my practice as long as it is within the laws of the U.S. Where does it say I can't pray in school,"

This is a part that I admit has bothered me for a while. They shouldn't be able to restrict us praying. It violates our right of religion, and our freedom of speech.

"It says I can't force u to do so, but I can do what I want as long as I don't disrupt anyone else."

Tell your teacher that, if they try to stop you from praying.

"And isn't the state removing the ten commandments from a courthouse forcing athiesm on me."

Now this isn't in any way promoting atheism. Having the commandments up is promoting the jewish and christian religions. While I'm still wondering why anyone would care if they're up, I think it's not an openly bad thing.

"A statue affects noone, but putting on the news the government ripping it out forces atheistic principles on me. Think about it."

Umm.... How? And it's a big thing, of course CNN is going to cover it.

They can't tell you not to pray if you're in a public school.

The only thing I've ever heard of being restricted in regards to prayer is when people attempt to proselytize other students or evangelizing the school. In my opinion, restricting that sort of activity is A-OK.

Well one thing that will tend to get restricted is if you're at, say, a school football game and someone gets on the mic asking everyone to pray for this or that or whatever. That is certainly guaranteed to get the government at your door, b/c it's viewed as imposing your religion upon the crowd. I've seen a hanfdful of new stories that pretty much go like that. Most of them in Texas.

Commandment #3, buddy. I would think that someone who is so avid about having these commandments in courthouses wouldn't break one of them by EDITING IN a phrase that uses the Name of the Lord Thy God in vain... Or did you just forget all of them because you didn't see them in your local couthouse?
