I know that this news is a couple of days old but I just feel like discussing it. The first ever Trojan horse has been discovered in the OS X. It can be called either MP3Concept or MP3Virus.gen and apparently it can delete all of a user's personal files, send an e-mail message containing a copy of itself to other users and infect other MP3, JPEG, GIF or QuickTime files. I saw this quote from the official site of Tech TV, "MP3Concept's danger is completely theoretical. This trojan hasn't been released into the wild. However, the existing exploit code could be used as a building block. A virus writer could tweak the executable code to make it more dangerous." With that said, do you guys think that Mac users should really worry about this and what do you think Mac users should do about this? (edited by Ruby Weapon 7 on 04-10-04 05:41 AM) |

Wait... so, if I understand this right, they found a security hole and a method of exploiting it, so they put out a press release to tell everyone? I mean, I'm all for freedom of information, but doesn't that seem a bit.. self-depracating?

YES!!! I'm sick and tired of people saying the Mac rules. Now nothing about it is good about it. Long live the PC! |

It doesn't matter. This sounds like something the RIAA would be willing to do. Excuse the conspiracy theory, but seriously...Who wants to target MP3s in that way? |

Originally posted by FallenWarrior32 I'm not that worried about it. I've never been stupid enough to arrogantly think my Mac was always going to be immune. I'll just keep doing what I always do, regularly run my software update, keep up the firewall and scan my laptop every week. hopefully that will be enough |

See, the thing I don't like is people saying the Mac is the best just because it is somehow almost immune to viruses. Everything else about them though. Finally Apple can start realizing that Microsoft is already at a Monopoly in the computer industry, and back out. |

I think every company that makes operating systems should temporarily leave so Microsoft gets sued for being a monopoly.

Hasn't Microsot already been sued for that? It'd be funny to see it again though. Bill Gates has the money to lose.

Well on PC, Midi files had a security flaw with Direct X. Sure it have been fixed for long time ago but sometimes threats not only comes from ordinary programs. But then image files does sounds abit far-fetched. But then I have no idea how Mac handles thoose type of files. |

Originally posted by Felix Yes, JPEG and GIF files can both be infected as well. From what I heard, they have similar tags to MP3 files and that is why they can be infected as well. According to http://it.rockefeller.edu/, there is no virus definition or removal tool available for this virus but there are a few ways to guard against it after you install Norton AntiVirus. 1. Check for and install all critical security updates 2. Run LiveUpdate to update Norton virus definitions. 3. Run a full system scan for viruses. (If you receive a message that the virus is in quarantine, then you are not infected.) 4. Do not double-click on any .mp3 files or attachments from unknown sources. So basically, you have to prevent it from infecting your computer. |

I never liked macs anyways, with or without Trojan horses. JPEG and GIF files? sucks for the person who gets the Trojan, i haven't had a trojan in like 4 years.

As long as people have virus scanners on their Macs, there shouldn't be any problems... A Mac virus won't make too many waves anyways. Now, a LINUX virus on the other hand... |
