Due to some ordering problems I'm going to be changing my order a bit for my new motherboard. Apparently the memory and CPU I wanted aren't available anymore. Instead I'm looking at this and this (and this board, which is still available). The only thing I noticed that might present a problem is that the memory is 400mhz, but the CPU's FSB is 333mhz. The board supports both, but can I mix them like that? (I'm sure I could run the CPU at 400, but I'd rather not try overclocking until I know everything works. )

i believe RAM will be clocked down lower...I mean, you can always lengthen a clock cycle--it is shortening clock cycles that cause trouble....

There's no problem with running the RAM at 400 and the CPU's FSB at 333.

It might be more stable if both are at 333, but DDRAM can be set at pretty much any speed from 200 (PC2100) to 533 (PC4200 or something) as long as the RAM chip is capable of the higher speeds.

It might give better performance if the RAM is at 400MHz since the bus and bandwidth available to other resources will be greater.

It might be a setting you could play around with. Or, you could easily just change the CPU's FSB to 400MHz to match the RAM's, and be done with it, and have a 2GHz CPU (about a 2800+ or so) for the price of a 2400+ And that CPU should be able to do it, mine is a 1.8 (2500+) stock I have set to 2.2 (3200+) by JUST bumping up the FSB from 333 to 400. Stable as a rock, and I even lowered the core voltage.

I probably will just run the CPU at 400, but...

But if there's no problems there, I suppose I'll go ahead and order. Again.

OR you could just leave everything at it's default setting. Chip at 333, ram at 400. Running everything at its approved setting is the best way to get maximum stability.

Yeah... the whole question was if I could do that, though.

Well the whole answer is yes you can and you should.

PS: I notice you havent upgraded to XPsp1/sp2 yet based on the stats you added to the left of your posts. Microsoft will stop supporting pre-SP1 (no more windows updates, even critical ones) at the end of I belive this year.

I'm still running my backup install which isn't maintained. I don't intend to re-install on the other HD, or even burn the disc, until I get the new parts, for fear that something will screw up and corrupt system files. You wouldn't believe how buggy it's getting; it doesn't even detect mouse clicks properly half the time now. I'm half expecting some part on the board to just pop.

[edit] Hopefully nobody minds me deleting/re-posting this, but it's kind of important. Can a CPU with a 266mhz FSB run on a board designed for 333/400mhz? Because I found a nice, inexpensive CPU that seems to be popular (so hopefully it won't get removed anytime soon), but it's 266mhz and the board says 333 or 400. Would they be compatible at all? (I imagine it'd probably run faster than intended, so I'd have to buy a hella nice fan or two, but that's not really my concern right now.)

You should order parts from Newegg.com, They always have great deals and very reliable shipping and good stock. I've built custom PC's from them a few times before.

I'd love to. Now as soon as they realize that Canadians use computers...

Yeah, i'm sorry for that foolish mistake. I was not aware new egg didn't ship out of the United States. Most sites i've seen will ship almost anywhere in the world. Ohh well, good luck getting that computer working.
