I was thinking it would be good if a thread was marked as having new posts if someone edited their post. For example I just edited one in the bug thread (since I had the last reply already ), but without actually reading it every time there's no way to tell.

That would mean that if someone decided to edit their thread they could 'bump' it without actually bumping it.

Good idea in theory, bad idea when implemented.

Don't like that too. Due to maybe heavier edits in large threads (6+ pages) it might be just a waste of clicks - or if people have volume rates for their internet - bandwith.
Now you could say "But you can always the last poster's entry and date!" - but if I'm in a hurry for example, I click on an interesting "NEW!" anyway and don't pay attention if there is another last poster or not

I think it would be a good idea if you have the last post in the thread, and the edit is done within like a week of the original reply.

It sounds like a good idea at first, but the thread bumping that it would cause would create a problem...and if the post that was edited wasn't the most recent post in the thread, it would cause a distraction. "What? This thread doesn't really have a new post? Oh, I see, so-and-so edited a spelling mistake out of the third post..."

I had this same idea a long time ago until I thought it over, and realized how annoying it could get.

Maybe just having this for stickied threads would be nice, but I just honestly think such a feature would get annoying.

No, I don't think he means it's bumped up. I think he means the little "NEW" picture reappears.

Which seems like a good idea, for those of us that use Mark Forum Read. Which I don't, but it still seems good...

Guess I jumped the gun on this thread ...

"That" actually doesn't seem like a bad idea, or maybe we could even make a new image that would show "Edit" or something? (where the "New" image is shown) ... Eh? I guess.

But yeah, that's not a bad idea now that I know what it is.

Bleh, it would be a better idea if people was able to double-post instead after a few days or something. And edit can be hard to spot sometimes. (and I think that all staff should be able to double post. :/)

Thought I have been in the same situation myself in the past, and I even had to ask other friends to bump the thread (in a non-spammy friends) a few times. That's not necessery either but... :/

Except for the fact that's impossible with the current way MFR is handled

Hm, well a little "new" flag would be great... particularly when you have the last post but you have to add new information to a thread..... cause an edit doesn't guarantee that anybody will even check the thread.

PS, everybody please check my stupid question in the HW/SW problem and fix my compy It's teh sad.

The only temporary workaround might be to copy the post's content into clipboard, delete that post and then reenter a new post - pasted in the copied content, along with your edits here. The board will give the post a new postid number - and the forum will have a "NEW" post.

Is that allowed? I've seen people get yelled at for that on a few boards.

It's allowed here, I've seen it done a few times, and it was reasonable. I remember one time I deleted the final post in this homework thread, and planned to ask a question, but while typing the question I answered it for myself. I couldn't repost it without a pretty much mindless bump.
It wasn't a big deal or anything, but it's just an example of how deleting and reposting can be inconvenient. But I don't know of a better idea.

Subtitles might be an idea - like in an Ikonboard or vBB - especially when having ROM-hacking questions it is better to have a short description in line two - and stickied thread might be like

"FAQ" - subtitle: "Last update: 03/06/2006"

So you likely won't miss updates.

But it really isn't common that people make important edits. If every thread had a last update: blah, it'd really looked cluttered and ugly, and in most cases be identical to the "Last post" date.

So only show it if there's been an edit.
