What are you going for in it? I'd say try the butterfish first. It's easiest on you. Or maybe kappa maki or something along those lines. I personally like the octopus temari, but that's just me.

you can start off with california rolls (not sure if they are only in california thought) but they do not have any raw fish whatsoever... i don't have much preference of sushi--it's all good to me... as for taste, it doesn't taste nasty or anything...the fish I don't have much of a distinctive taste |

It's been a while since I've had sushi...but last time I tried something with octopus. It's pretty good, actually, but it sort of has its own taste.

California rolls are good, but I still suggest Kappa Maki or maybe even crab meat for the first go.

Ugh, I hate sushi. Bleh. I remember trying it once with my softball team before a game, and it made me so sick and I didn't even eat a lot because it was so gross. I'll never try it again. I don't like any kind of seafood, to be honest. |

Ah!!! This was a staple in my diet when I lived at home! I don't get to have it so much here..and the thing is, it is pretty expensive to get the good kind. I wouldn't recomend any other, however--if you get a lousy batch, you could get pretty sick. Any good Japanese restaurant will make it right..I would maybe suggest a chain restauraunt if you are not sure about a local place. I am totaly with Ziff on this, Kappa Maki or crab is the best best way to go! California rolls are also a nice way to break in to sushi, but it is still very different and not exactly the real thing. If you try those, get some with tuna or shrimp--I love them! Sushi can go great with some well prepaired Onigiri. The whole tase, it can be sweet, or tangy, or spicey, but it was never weird! Not to me. If you like seafoods, you will enjoy it so much Sushi is not the only kind of Japanese food I would recomend to you, however! If you are new to Japanese food in the whole, you might not want to just start on a sushi. A good dish to start you is a teppanyaki plate--generaly, beef, chicken, or shrimp or lobster. It is served over rice with 2 kind of sauce to dip your diced meat in (it is not raw, it is cooked) and it also will have vegetables. It is more mild but it is a good way to start out. Another good food like I did mention is an Onigiri, and that goes super good with sushi too! It is rice sort of like a triangle or a ball shape, with a center filled with pickled plum or fish roe and wrapped in nori, a dark green seaweed. It may even have something different like chared beef (yakuniku), crab, tuna, or even lobster! This is one of my favorite foods and I even make it here in America some times. I would very much recomend that to you If you wanna know anything else about sushi, or any Japanese food, just ask! To me, sushi is the best food on the planet. And it seems to me it has its own taste, so you should just try it if you like it.

I'm assuming that since I don't like seafood, I won't like sushi.

Since almost all of its ingredients except for the rice and the sauces come from the sea, then you probably would not

I have had some sushi, and it was nice, although I couldn't tell you what type of sushi I had. One day I want to go to a Japanese restaurant and try some more Japanese food. I only know of two in Adelaide though, one is called Teppanyaki (and has at times been advertised heavily), and the other I don't know about at all. :-/ |

Ah! Tepanyaki is quite good. I would recomend it if you get the chance to go, you won't be sorry at all. And so you know, you will be sitting around the grill, maybe with other people, while they make the food for you. It is a cool experience if you never had it happen before, sometimes the chef will do tricks too^^ (edited by Yoronosuku on 06-30-05 11:37 PM) |

Alright, sounds good, I like most seafoods, so I dont think ill have a problem with it, and besides if I dont like it, I dont have to eat it again. Ill be sure to try something else when I go, and seeing as how Tepanyaki was mentioned quite a few times, ill have to try that. Probably wont be until Tuesday, or so, when I go out of town, since thats when ill have some extra money, and will be looking for a restaurant to eat in. Octopus temari sounds good...I never tried octopus, but I love squid, so yeah. (edited by Dcahrakos on 06-30-05 11:54 PM) |

I'm going to be going to Japan (Aichi-ken) during the week of August 10th. Sadly, I have not had the opportunity of trying any Japanese food as of yet since there aren't any good ones where I live. I've heard of Teppanyaki -- but never tried it. Yoronosuku, yeah, I have seen where they prepare the food right in front of you -- it's pretty neat. I'll probably wait until I actually go to Japan to try sushi -- since you can get any more genuine than that.

Try gyoza while you are there, and miso soup. Those are always good. Sushi can cost from 1 dollar a roll to 5 at my restraunt. It can run up the bill fast, especially if you are doing a la carte. |

Used to work in a sushi bar, and I could recommend some pretty good ones. California rolls are okay but might I suggest some shrimp rolls or the squid first. Then if you feel adventurous, try the eel next. Most of the time it's glazed with teriyaki, very sweet like candy. Then, have some redtail and salmon (my personal favourite). Spider rolls are one of the most filling rolls I've ever had. They tend to be bigger than the others and very tasty. I don't recommend wasabi or ginger before trying new kinds of sushi; it would spoil the taste. You try it and see how you feel after that. I don't think about fish when I eat it. It's more like a clean delicacy. Also, the Miso soup does make a great appetizer. It's a soybean soup with leek onion. A for the price, you can get 20 to 30 pieces of good sushi for around $50. I would highly consider eating some. (edited by Cruel Justice on 07-01-05 12:29 AM) |
