wtf? No thread on this yet?

Georgie boy has still got it. In this day and age of shitty psychological horror (The Ring, it sucked. The Grudge, it sucked. You know it.), it's good to see that he can still show these people how a good horror movie should be made. Let's face it, most horror movies these days suck ass.

More important than being scary, the gore factor was pretty good. (For a big time movie release that is...) I'm surprised at some of the stuff they let him get away with.

Land of the Dead is the feel good movie of the year and I recommend you go see it.

Oh, and I gotta do this...

I kinda figured someone else would make a thread on this.

It was definitely a good zombie movie, to be sure. All my fellow zombie movie nerds cheered when Tom Savini came onscreen.

I looked at the credits, and supposedly Simon Pegg was also supposed to have a cameo somewhere in the movie. Nobody I went with saw him the first time around.

Wow, it sure has been a long time. I figured I might as well come back and speak up for my favorite movie series and director.

((Note, this review comes from www.homepageofthedead.com, where quite a bit of nitpicking and arguing is going on. No offense is intended to anyone on this board. Also, there are quite a few spoilers, so if you haven't seen it yet, turn back now!))

Land of the Dead. Land of the Dead. Rolls right off the tongue, doesn't it? Well, just like the name, this movie is pretty damn good in my humble opinion. I hear a lot of people complaining about the movie on the forums. My advice? Shut the **** up. You paid your five bucks, you got your undead movie, be happy with it. Why do you feel the need to nitpick every dammned aspect of this film?

First of all, your expectations were much too high. As they well were bound to be. Day came out in 1985, and many of us (myself included) weren't even alive then. Even so, there has been a huge amount of anticipation. We all kept dreaming of this pie-in-the-sky movie that would completely blow us away. Reality check. No one, not even Romero, will ever make the perfect zombie movie. There will always be a a**holes, like a few members here, who will never be satisfied. That's all well and good, but you people need to lighten up.

First up, the story. The story is very well done, and the pacing is excellent. Though there's not much characterization or backstory, Romero isn't exactly known for this. What the hell was Ben's story? Or Roger's? Or Rhodes'? Romero doesn't do much backstory, and Land is no exception. After the fall of civilization and the walking corpses get up, everyone is on pretty much equal footing. You kill a few, you survive, you eventually band together. Simple as that.

Next, the zombies. The acting on the zombies was very good, even though there have been some complaints. They move funny, but these are reanimated walking corpses, no one is bound to find their jerky body movements very serious. The special effects were awesome, and Nicotero is a worthy sucessor to Savini. The zombies do move a bit faster, yes, but haven't they done the same in each previous movie? In Night, they moved so slowly you could walk right by them with little worry. In Dawn, they got a little more limber and could actually keep track of prank-playing bikers. In Day, they shambled along even faster, as the food was getting even more scarce. No big surprise that in Land, these zombies can equal a human power-walker in some cases.

The characters were memorable for the most part. Riley was an excellent character, and he kept up the typical Romero human hero tradition. Slack had very little screen time, but Argento is a great actress, and he made the hooker-with-a-heart-of-gold character very likeable. Charlie is perhaps the best character in the movie, tied with Pillsbury. The disfigured mentally-challenged person with the aim of a sniper was a cool concept, and even cooler in play. Cholo was my favorite, and Leguizamo has now done perhaps the best antagonist in a Romero film, even if he wasn't much of an antagonist. I sympathized with him the whole movie, and his eventual transformation into a zombie and tussle with Kaufman was classic. The soldiers sent along with Riley were mostly forgettable, with the exception of Pillsbury. I loved Pillsbury, and he will most definetly go down as a classic Romero character. Kaufman, played by the excellent Hopper, was a true antagonist who genuinely made me dislike him, and laugh at his actions. Especially the shoot-the-other-rich-guy scene.

But the real stars of the show were Big Daddy and his crew of semi-intelligent zombies. Big Daddy was an excellent zombie, and a great example of Romero's symbolism. The big man had no resemblance to a Klingon, as many have claimed, though. Sports girl zombie and butcher zombie were great as well, each developing skills with the guidance of Big Daddy over time. Savini's cameo had me applauding while in tears, it was so good.

The social satire and commentary was overall very good, making this a perfect Romero film for our time. The symbolism always had me guessing, and eventually it all made sense. However, let's face it, most moviegoers aren't going to notice this. They're going to notice the gunfights and the fact that lots of shit blows up. This is why Romero included these aspects. Simply for the reason that the average viewer only has the attention span to notice flames or guns going off.

Overall, I give this movie a 4 out of 5. Not as good as Night, but definetly on the level of Dawn, and a little better than Day.

I loved it. It was a definitive progression of the series, with the zombies finally regaining human faculties.

Additionally am I the only one that thought it really ran sideline to Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men in relation to its social commentary?

Anybody else guess which Savini and Shaun of the Dead were?

I never understood in what aspect the zombies were getting smarter, they've used tools throughout the entire "canon". Do they talk and use guns now? I haven't seen the movie yet, it premiers in f*cking August over here. I don't know what the hell is taking them so long, there are no censor laws yet we have to wait longer than the germans who have to cut and re-dub the entire crap. It pisses me off to the point where I'm considering finding a download for it.
