OK, so I've been trying to network a winXP professional computer and a win98SE cmputer, but they can't seem to recognize each other. Their system specs are: WinXP comp: WinXP Professional Version 2002 AMD Duron CPU 1.02 Ghz. 224Mb of RAM SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet adapter Win98SE: Win98SE with all updates Pentium 200mhz. with MMX SMC EtherEZ 64Mb of RAM Now, I'm trying to connect over a WRT54GS Wirless router, but the winXP comp says I can't access the workgroup "MSHOME", which is what I configured as the workgroup in both computers using the network setup wizard. There are no pther computers in the network. The WinXP comp is named "OFFICE", and the Win98 comp is named "NICK". Does anyone know a way to help or need any additional info? |

do you have file sharing installed for both computers? what is the IP address and subnet mask for both computers?

All the networking components are installed, and the IP addresses are 192.168.1.102 and 192.168.1.1. The subnet masks are both 255.255.255.0.

what's the IP address of the router? because 192.168.1.1 is typically used for the router... have you tried going to run and trying "\\[IP Address]" to talk to the other computer? |

That could be a problem, because I'm using DHCP with the router, but both the router and the WinXP comp have the same IP. EDIT: whoops. read the wrong one. the WinXP comp uses IP address 192.168.1.100, and the router 192.168.1.1 (edited by Darkflight on 06-27-05 08:32 PM) |

Did you try using ipconfig? I had this problem before and somehow changing some thing with the IP of the subnet mask made it work.

yep, I released and renewed the IP, but how do you change the subnet? guess I should have a little look... Ah, damn. I'll have to do it later, because I can't do it from my account, only my mom's.

Bah, I can't get this to work either. I don't have a crossover cable to connect them (unless I sacrifice my Interweb connection) at the moment but I've been trying to get it to connect to the cable modem. The connection wizard is of course useless. I tell it I want to connect through a LAN and it says it's done and opens IE to a 404. None of the NIC drivers contain information about the hardware. 192.168.0.1 is unreachable and the installer only opens a folder with about 50 different subfolders with random numbers for names, each containing an unlicensed Winzip self-extractor which dumps 20MB of useless drivers onto my HD. Windows says there's a problem with the card and has no idea what, just an 'error 1F6'.

OK. I went back and tried connecting to the win98 with my mom's laptop, and that worked, and the laptop could even access stuff unavailable to the winXP. ?The laptop uses winXP too, but Please don't anybody ask what the IP or anything is, I'll never get my mom to let me get that info. The laptop can even transfer data, but only out of my comp, it doesn't seem to have any sharing allowed, because it won't show up on the network. All of the TCP/IP stuff is handled through DHCP by the router, according to the settings (everything is set to get it from the router). |

hmm...have you allowed write access to the shared folders on the win98 machine?

full access, no password. The wireless laptop can see the win98, but not the winXP, so that's where the problem is, is with the windows XP computer which can't see any other computers on the network, nor can it see itself or be seen by others.

That's the main problem of the inferior 98 OS, networking/sharing. From my experiences, the 98 piece of the network will probably never see the XP piece. Hmm, have you mapped out drives yet? I've seen stuff not work over really stupid and little things before...

No, the win98 can see the laptop, so the only weak link the network is the desktop winXP. The win98 can access the laptop, but only until is gets stopped because the laptop is protected by a password. so, here are the computers. Laptop, Windows XP. Can see windows 98 computer, can be accessed by windows 98 computer.. Desktop, Windows XP. Cannot see anything, not even itself. Desktop, Windows 98. Can see laptop, not windows XP, can be accessed by laptop. |
