Not so much as a "What's your favorite game in this genre" thread, but what's been the hugest advance in graphics, gameplay, and innovativeness (if that's a word.) Doesn't matter if the game's 2, 5, or 10 years old, it you think it was a milestone, put it in!! Side-Scrolling: Super Mario Bros. 3 First Person Shooter: Doom (can't go past the oldies) Racing: Gran Turismo 1 3D Adventure: Super Mario 64 Puzzle: A tricky one... I'll stick with Puznic at the moment, but it could change with Meteos (NDS) RPG: Final Fantasy 7 (Not my favorite, but most improvement) Can't really think of any other genres at the moment... Add you own ofcourse. |

Side-scrolling as a single genre? What? Anyway: Action - Space Station Silicon Valley (Not sure what else to classify it as) Adventure - Zelda: Ocarina of Time / Beyond Good & Evil Board Game - Wily and Light's RockBoard: That's Paradise Exploration - Super Metroid / Metroid Prime / Body Harvest (Ufouria gets an honorable mention) First Person Shooter - Goldeneye / Half Life 2 (Not sure what else to classify the game as..exploration?) Flying Shootemup - DonPachi Horror - Eternal Darkness / Resident Evil 4 Multiplayer - Bomberman 64 (could change to an upcoming online DS game, though) Puzzle - Tetrisphere / Wetrix Racing - Top Gear Rally / Extreme-G XG3 Racing RPG - Secret of Mana I expect there are some oddballs on there that most people haven't tried. I recommend that everyone try at least most of what's on my list, since they're pretty top-notch games. |

Forgot about Tetrisphere. That was a pretty sweet game. I'm gonna download Body Harvest right now. I remember playing that game ages ago when I owned an N64. Not a bad game. | |||

The Puzzle Milestone was Tetris. And for offline Multiplayer, be it Mario Kart 64, goldeneye, micromashines or Bomberman Generation (more the latter), but not Bomberman 64. Simulation: Sim City 2000 Shoot 'em Up: Sexy Parodius / Metal Slug 3 |

Ah, Simulation; forgot about that one. Sim City SNES and Sim Tower are my favorite sim games. I really dislike Tetris because it gets so repetetive. A puzzle game should be addictive and should maintain a high level of fun; I don't think Tetris fits the bill, at least for me. I can't play it for more than 5 or 10 minutes without getting sick of it. As for multiplayer, Bomberman 64 has always been a blast when I break it out for multiplayer gaming, even moreso than Mario Krt 64 or Goldeneye. The gameplay is fun, the levels are great (Pyramid and Greedy Trap, to name a few), playing as a ghost is fun, the last minute of frantic gameplay is a blast, and throwing opponents off of ledges is classic. Everything about it is great and has always been successful when I'm with friends and an N64. I won't deny that Mario Kart 64 and Goldeneye are great multiplayer games, though; they're quite good. |

Hm. Genres. 2D Platformer: SMB3 or Zelda 2. 3D Platformer: Either SM64 or Conker's Bad Fur Day, in totally different ways. Action: Contra Action/RPG: Zelda. Adventure: Monkey Island. Exploration: Exploration is a genre now? Then Zelda goes here again. FPS: Half-life, no freaking doubt. Horror: Eternal Darkness. Totally different perspective on it. Multiplayer: Worms. Puzzle: Tetris, though I don't like it. Racing: Super Mario Kart, though once again, I don't like it too much. RPG: I'm torn between Chrono Trigger and Earthbound, but let's just say EB. RTS: Herzog Zwei. It started an entire genre, so I think it goes here. Simulation: Sim City, the original and the SNES. Both huge leaps. Space Shooter: Guardian Legend or Ikaruga. Strategy: Advance Wars. (Famicom Wars to be fair. It made war wacky!) Fire Emblem as well. I wouldn't say any of these are the pinnacles of their genre, but they fit the bill for revolutionary. All of these either changed the way people looked at that type of game, or just turned the standards upside-down. Hooray for that. (edited by TheCube on 06-26-05 06:44 AM) |

2D Platformer: Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (Altought I like Kirby 64 and Kirby Amazing Mirror... SMW2 truly remains undefeated to this day. Long and challenging game (which is surprising for a pre-N64 Mario game) that will keep you coming for more.) 3D Platformer: Donkey Kong 64 (Don't throw tomatoes at me! Really long, deep, and challenging game. Didn't run into bugs during my games unlike nearly everyone else. Altought the game isn't nearly as difficult or engaging as Super Mario Sunshine, Donkey Kong 64 wins in the long run becease that it's simply one of the most massive games I ever played; it's basically as long as a RPG!) Racing, Realistic: (I hate them, sorry) Racing, Comic: Mario Kart Doubledash (Mario Kart just cannot be beaten in terms of gameplay both in single and multiplayer. Unlike most others, I'm unnaffected by the "Nostalgia" syndrome and as such, consider the most advanced one as the best. Mario Kart on the DS will most probably outshine this game.) Shoot-'em-up: Super Turrican 2 (obscure little gem. Only Turrican game that isn't a repeat of the original... and frankly, if they hadn't waited this long to make an original one, the serie would have turned more popular than Contra! Outshine nearly everything else I know... even the mighty Contra 3!) Scrolling Shooter: Axelay (the game is uber-short... but it's one of those games you just cannot get sick of. Play it and see!) FPS: Half Life (I like Perfect Dark and all... but Half Life truly is an unique experience... I'm not usually into liking the original over the sequel but frankly, they missed the point with the second one, focusing more on the arcade parts of the game and less on what made the original so different and ultimately, fun... which are the atmosphere, attention to detail, original ways of beating up bosses (rarely would you use a gun), that kind of thing) Beat-'em-up, 3D: Soul Calibur 2 (HUGE single-player mode, nearly perfectly balanced characters for an excellent multiplayer game. Has a preference for the Gamecube version since Link, unlike Spawn and that other character from the PS2 version whose name I cannot remember, is not over-powered.) Beat-'em-up, 2D: Super Smash Bros. Melee (this blends genres a bit becease of the single-player mode... but this fits the bill as a 2D fighting game I think. Probably the best game of all times!... until SSB3 comes out.) Third Person Action: Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes (the original's fantastic gameplay + the second's improve AI and GFX = a winner is the player) RPG: Tales of Symphonia (buy it, try it, play it, beat it, worship it. Starts up with a cliched story and then ends up throwing more plot twists at you than you can handle and more action-packed battles than every FF ever made. As long as two or three regular RPGs. Paper Mario 2 is actually, in my opinion, the best RPG... but it suffers in terms of lenght and as such, Tales of Symphonia takes the cake becease of Paper Mario 2's issue with it's lenght (not difficulty. Paper Mario 2 is actually one of the harder RPGs out there. Some boss battles, especially the later ones, are quite brutal!).) Action RPG: Secret of Mana 2 (knows the real name... but forgot how it's written. Anyway, it's like Secret of Mana exept your character stays in the middle of the screen unstead of the edge (which is a HUUUUUGE improvement over the original) and lobs you with more game time than one could handle. If you tought the original was long... then wait until you try the sequel! Add in this the fact that you get to have 3 main variations to the story and 6 points of view for the story and you have plenty of game time in front of you!) MMORPG: (paying monthly after I bought the game? F**k that.) 2D Adventure: Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past (Guardian Legend was a good contender for this place altought it's more of a hybrid... but Link to the Past takes the cake becease of lenght issue and while Guardian Legend is only beaten by the Metroid Prime serie in terms of sheer diffuclty, it isn't a very engaging experience at first and it takes a while before you can get into the game (mainly, it takes a while before you can clear the fiendishly difficult prologue stage and then gets to orient yourself into the main maze when you actually reach it) while Link to the Past is a no-brainer in terms of introduction, making you jump directly into the action and story. Minish Cap was way too short to stand a chance and while the Oracles serie beats them all in terms of game time, the game does get a bit tedious at times) 3D Adventure: Metroid Prime 2 Echoes (the original proved Metroid in 3D could work, the second makes it even better! People were disappointed becease they espected another revolution while the second game is, in fact, an evolution. Bigger, stronger, harder, better than the original... I just don't understand why people are disappointed here... maybe becease I usually supress my hype before playing a new game? Anyway... Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask are really fine games but both Metroid Prime games murders them and brutally at that! One of the best games of all times.) Puzzle: Pokemon Puzzle League (AKA Tetris Attack 2. I would have said Tetris Attack 3 if it would have been released in America, allowing me to try it. Anyway, it's a bloody fine game we have here! Try it or else) Survival Horror: Resident Evil 4 (Capcom, the champion of making old and tired series does the impossible: revive it's most tired serie! Just like Metroid Prime, there was little hype here after the last Resident Evil games... but we had a revolution the size of what Metroid Prime brought. Resident Evil? Dead? You wish! Only Resident Evil that has bosses that aren't totally pathetic by the way... and also the only game where the zombies actually think before charging toward you, seeking to eat your brains out (or later on, to laser-saber your brains out. Got a bit of a laugh out of the later zombies' electric swords. Yep! That's right! The zombies now got weapons and believe me, they know how to use them!).) RTS: Starcraft (unchallenged champion of all strategy games. THE most balanced game in all history... and also packs one of the best single-player campaigns ever designed. You just cannot help but like this game. Warcraft 3 and Command & Conquer just cannot touch this gem... well, maybe Tiberian Sun can but it's plague with a design flaw (WEED!!! AAAAARG!). Along with Metroid Prime 2, one of the only games that can compare to SSBM) (edited by Zerodius on 06-26-05 10:29 AM) |

Zerodius... Scatterheart already said that this wasn't about your favorite games in the genre, but the biggest advance in gameplay, graphics, and innovation (to use the correct word). Scatterheart: Time to be picky. I gotta edit this thread title. Spelling errors irritate me. Although, going by Dictionary.com, that's not the right word anyway, but... I'm still gonna fix the spelling. I've played too few games to really pick anything for these, unfortunately. |

Well... made a very stupid mistake I guess... Anyway, my last post will remain there until I get back from my vacation (I want to save the post's content on my computer and since I need to use my computer to do that... that means this post will remain there for a while). Oh boy... This is gonna be tough and some picks are going to be out of left field. Plus I'll probably end up changing half of these picks if you were to ask me a week from now. Action (2D): Super Mario Bros. 3 Action (3D): Super Mario 64 Adventure (2D): Super Metroid/Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Adventure (3D): Zelda: Ocarina of Time RPG: Final Fantasy VI Puzzle: Tetris (everything evolved from it) Simulation: Theme Park (it did a lot of unique things at the time which were later copied by other sims, and was without peer at the time) Management: Football Manager 2005 FPS: Doom Shoot-em-up: Gradius/Gunstar Heroes Racing: Super Mario Kart/Gran Turismo Wrestling: Fire Pro Wrestling R (isn't out yet but all the improvements being put into the game make it almost certain it'll be the wrestling game that all others are judged by) Zerodius: I might get Tales of Symphonia whenever I get some cash... It just became a Player's Choice title but I'm wondering if it's only Player's Choice in Canada. |
